I’ve been out of RC for about 18 years. It’s baffling that Kyosho is now “different” or an outlier in the 1/8th scale buggy racing world. Back when I was in it. The Inferno was the car at least in my area. They don’t have Kyosho anything at Tammie’s hobbies in Oregon near me. Things have changed very much. I just bought an MP10 rtr Nitro to enter back in the hobby.
@TranceFur11 ай бұрын
Yep, nowadays Kyosho is sort of considered a “classic” RC company, a bit like Tamiya. Not that modern Kyosho buggies aren’t just as competitive as their counterparts from other brands, but most racers have decided that there are better options on the market.

I don't own the 8ight buggy, but I do own the 8ight xte truggy, and I can say your assessment of TLR is spot on. It's maddening how so many of their parts are always out of stock, even from Horizon themselves. I have to add one other thing that bugs me about TLR as well. The way they sell many of their parts is downright infuriating: they bundle a lot of their parts together so you have to buy other parts you don't need in order to get the one that you do. For example, I needed a new differential pinion. You can't buy just the pinion from TLR, you also have to buy the differential main gear as well. Both of these parts are machined metal, and it's FORTY DOLLARS to get them both. They did the same thing with their motor mount plate: you can't buy just the plate, you have to buy the whole mount assembly. $55 total. Ebay kit breakers will become your best friend. By contrast, if I need a diff pinion for my tekno sct, I can buy it on its own and it's $20. I love my xte. It's an amazing truck. I'm going to continue to drive it until the wheels fall off. But after how hard it is to find parts in stock and how maddening their practice of combining them into a single sku is, I'll never buy another TLR again.

Wanted to add to the Kyosho section: in addition to their MP10 TKI3 and MP10e TKI2 kits, they also make RTR buggies of the MP9 and MP10s (nitro and electric) as part of their Readyset line. The MP10e Readyset is about $560 with radio, 4S brushless electronics, and is compatible with most of the TKI2 parts. Nitro version with radio and KE21SP engine is $530. They also have the inexpensive $430 Inferno NEO 3.0 VE readyset for bashing and introductory racing. Prices from AMain.

I'm racing a Serpent SRX8e and SRX 8e Pro in Europe mostly on Astroturf. The car is just awesome! The design is very very good. Build quality and durability are awesome, the car is very well balanced and runs great on kit setup already but allows for further fine tuning; the window from kit allows to tune to both ends and is useful depending conditions. It has a lot of steering and is very stable on power. Some downsides are the steel spur which becomes noisy very easily and tends to eat the pinions (alignment is very delicate). Also the 13/44 gear ratio at the diffs and 44T spur and minimum pinion size of 14 does not allow very short gearing but seems sufficient. Parts availability used to be OK but is becoming problematic as Serpent is not very active anymore supporting 1/8 offroad.

The agama N1 platform actually excels on rough tracks now that agama has fixed the front shock bodies and extended them +4mm. They were too short at first and that’s why VRP made the droop upgrade kit. But the lower CG means it doesn’t buck nearly as high when it hits a rut. I’m running the N1e w/VRP V2 kit and it’s insanely good…the platform as a whole - Jumps lower, rotates faster, and steers more neutrally and predictably than anything I’ve ever experienced. It just does what you want it to do. And to top it off. If you need more grip, you can remove the sway bars. Even on high-grip. We don’t run a front sway bar. Unless it’s extreme grip, and even then it’s very light. And for Super low-grip - No rear sway bar either! Nemo usually had all the parts we need..although there have been times where stuff is out of stock..many companies faced that during/post covid. I honestly think the shock package is the future..more ppl Will drive it and take notice. It’s already happening. Thanks for the content. Decently on point.

should i buy an agama as my first 1/8 buggy? or should i buy a tekno and wait till im more experienced. im still a beginner messing around with an ancient sc10 2wd i bought from offerup. im just starting to understand tuning
@Crabtronics9 ай бұрын
@@cdwag23 well I am obviously biased, but the easier car to drive is the N1. I have friends much faster than myself that actually switched from the Tekno 2.1 to the agama (Smiley Henn) and his claims are that the agama “does everything his tekno struggled/couldn’t do, and it does them 10X’s better” That being said. You’ll wanna get the VRP V2 kit and follow the guidance of Mike Ankey, the owner of VRP. He’s on a terror making new parts and exploring the newly recognized benefits of dramatically lowered CG. He also stocks agama parts now that the NEMO USA store closed..Which is a con on the decision of agama Vs tekno. Parts are attainable for sure, but Nemo UK being the main supplier. NEMO’s US sales are in a weird transition where they are looking for more vendors to sell their products. Which is good though..there’s multiple vendors for agama products so maybe I’m just old and preferred buying my stuff from grumpy billy @ Nemo USA lol….the tekno is a damn good buggy, and parts aren’t really an issue. But it’s a twitchy car and isn’t as neutral..that being said the ET/NT 48 2.0 is the best truggy on the market..till agama releases the N1T..then we’ll see what’s up w/that.

I just picked up the Serpent SRX8-E RTR for driving around the house when I can't get to the track (which is pretty much all the time lately), and it's a great little platform. Quality components and so far, pretty durable. I haven't really yeeted it yet though, so we'll see. For a sub-$500 ($450ish rn) 8th RTR, it's solid. I do recommend going through it and checking the build though.

I run Serpent srx8 pro e-buggy mostly, but have the nitro buggy, E-truggy and 2wd carpet car. Serpent makes great stuff, but do not have much of a following in most areas. I think mostly due to the abundance of other more popular brands, (A.E., Tekno, and TLR) and it not being convenient, as far as parts support goes. I have about 5 friends that run serpent locally, but I am still usually the only serpent driver at a lot of races. I am looking to get a different e-buggy as their ebuggy is 3 years old and no hope of a new one in the near future... I'm ready for something else. 👍

I've liked my Tekno NB48 & EB48 buggies (both 2.0) which I bought new in 2020. Feel like it's not as common for somebody to buy new kits and stick with them for more than like a year and a half, but here I am a couple months from hitting the 4 year mark. I would buy the NB 2.1, but I don't like that they went back to a normal center diff that requires disassembling / dumping the oil just to change the bearings (they slip over the outdrives, only on NB48 2.0). Also, they removed the active toe pill options from the rear outboard arm ends. So this morning, I ordered 2.1 c-hubs, spindles, and camber links from an ebay kit breaker. The longer links for a slower camber curve are nice, but mainly I just don't like the 2.0 kingpin setup, which uses screws threaded into the plastic knuckles (+ set screws). Those plastic threads get destroyed at least every 1.5 gallons, but no more threads on the 2.1.

Ugh... yeah, not going to get another TLR. I haven't raced in a while but I've got an 8ight 2.0. The 8ight 2.0 was dialed and super nimble, if a bit unforgiving at times. Then the 3.0 came out and Losi started focusing on making it easier to drive, at the expense of performance. Seems like that trend has continued so far that the 8ight X isn't even a contender anymore, and doesn't even do what they intended it to do.
