Good job but just some clarification. Second one and museum one are not judo yoko guruma. It's a jumping sweep guard from BJJ. Museum kimura sumi gaeshi is in fact a Japanese jujitsu/early judo hara gatame lock to sumi gaeshi hooking with the arm. Italy fight with Casian is not Hiki otoshi / kokyunage. It is a Juji nage/Juji garami nage from aikido/aikijitsu technique

I think the Wick films are remarkable for their emphasis on throws and grappling. The vast majority of cinematic fights I’ve seen pre-Wick are overwhelmingly focused on punching, kicking, and other forms of striking.
@kuzushi_kev Жыл бұрын
Right I agree.. it’s rare that you see judo at all. John wick changed the game.. after the first one you started to see more fight scenes with all the flying arm bars in Marvel, Atomic blonde, etc

thats the reason why JW has such a unique style. In previous HK and other HK inspired martial art flicks the emphasis was on fluid striking, blocking and dodging and flowing choreography with either the strikes or using the environment. Whereas JW uses grappling/throws and mixes guns into it

These are mostly gun and knife fights, so disarming and grappling are a better choice over old barehands classic fights. (more tactical...)

Great vid. I can tell a lot of work went into this one. Don't worry about the BJJ techniques. They're all Judo techniques Maeda taught to Gracie. He told them it was Jujutsu, but it was Kodokan Judo techniques, this is why BJJ is more sport oriented and we spend a lot of time on the ground. Jujutsu has the more brutal samurai battlefield techniques.

To clarify this, the closest martial art resembling Bjj is Kosen Judo, which is a grappling heavy form of Judo that evolved at minimum in parallel to Bjj. Japanese Jujitsu contains strikes, kicks, eye and body gouges, and grappling techniques intended to dislocate limbs and kill. There are some similarities between Aikido and Judo and Bjj because all are derived from the grappling parts of Jujitsu. Aikido and Judo evolved from the desire to be able to practice martial arts without the high chance of getting injured or dying in practice. It is not incorrect to say that Judo is a sect of Jujitsu that bans dangerous and "hard" techniques from sparring. You can learn Jujitsu but only spar with Judo. After some point, the excess Jujitsu techniques were dropped to focus on Judo.

Keanu needs to be up there with the martial arts legends in Hollywood, most people don't consider him a real martial artist perse, but even the JW behind the scenes said that Keanu basically trained his ass off to become almost as good as the other stunt guys. Not to mention his Kung Fu background from the Matrix movies.
@angeloschneider427223 күн бұрын
Because he is not a martial artist. He learned the stuff explicitly *only* for the movies. He was in an Aikido Dojo as a very young man, and lost interest. Except for the hard training for this movies, he never had any longer formal martial arts education. This are his own words btw.

I think John wick has sambo background first then Judo, Aikido/ Aikijustu, BJJ and Karate, since the third movie reveals he is Russian
@IzunaDestruction Жыл бұрын
Belarus. But there are indeed sambo practicioners in the theatre, one of them performing uchi-mata and a perfect koshi-guruma into a kesa-gatame, the other one performing a flying armbar. Sambo has a lot in common with judo, but flying armbars are much more popular in sambo than judo, and John uses that kind of stuff a lot, so i'd say this is correct.
@IzunaDestruction Жыл бұрын
I realize we are both partly wrong on his origins. The lady in the theatre talks about the "Ruska Roma". Those are the gypsies scattered around the actual Russia, Belarus and Ukraine sometimes persecuted under the Soviet Union. John refers to himself as "child of Belarus". The surname "Jovonovich" is likely an Americanized version of the Serbian Jovanovic, and many Roma communities are in fact of Serbian origins. It's also unclear if he is an orphan or son of somebody from a tribe. So his personal origin is unknown but the tribe he grew up with is likely of Serbian origin and under the USSR lived in Belarus. We could speculate that they fled communism and went to the United States. Anyway, sambo still remains a good guess, given the native region of his tribe and the fact that there are indeed sambo practitioners inside the theatre.

Nicely done. I did a lot of the throws and some of the aiki techniques when I did Japanese Ju-jitsu years ago. The throws work so much better as part of striking (when you are moving and off balance) rather than in a judo context (where you are mostly trying not to move). There are loads of awesome judo throws in Kudo competitions. I find Judo competitions rather boring to watch in comparison. (Judo people might not agree!)

Outstanding work! I love how we can see the actors and stunt workers breaking it down sequentially first, then we can see the genuine connections to center that the Aikidoka and Judoka are doing. You did some exhaustive research and brought very diverse film examples. I noticed you used a lot of Seagal-shihan and Reynosa-shihan and their students and I was VERY impressed to see you’d planted lots of Hiroshi Isoyama-shihan clips in there! When people talk crap about Aikido, I literally show them Lenny Sly or Isoyama. Now I can just show them this! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
@angeloschneider427223 күн бұрын
Lenny Sly is not really that good. E.g. he has a super bad technique and compensates with power and speed. E.g. Isoyama is an old man, he is powerful, yes. But: he uses technique, and his body is just fine. When Sly is at Isoyama's age: he will have ruined his body. Sly is one of those guys who think: if he makes everything more brutal, it is mor effective. This is of course "eye catchy" for the typical Aikido haters, but it is simply not true. Precision gives you the power, and correct technique the leverage, and then when you want to add speed in a safe manner: be my guest. But Sly would fail a first degree black belt test in basically every organization: because he mixes up brutality with technique.

Yea that’s in his top 3 for sure.. a lot of sacrifice yoko gurumas and kotegaeshi too
@Yupppi10 ай бұрын
I'm starting to feel like every sacrifice throw can be classified as yoko guruma in judo. I'm guessing they just have to go to the side and you have to sacrifice your back to the ground for it to be called yoko guruma. I didn't actually know kubi nage is a separate technique in judo, I'm thinking today it'd be labeled in competition just as something like koshi guruma, the Kodokan demonstration even has the behind the neck grip. With the ankle pick it's hard to say if it's kibisu gaeshi or kuchiki taoshi, since he grabs below the knee which is very high for heel trip and rather low for the one-handed throwdown. The first sacrifice throw in the first movie has been bothering me a lot. Maybe because it doesn't seem like a technique at all in the end, just him pulling and diving through the legs. To me it looked like fake sumi gaeshi where his leg was supposed to meet the inner thigh, but I've seen it called tomoe nage and now uki waza too. Some of the strangles also confused me, mainly because Kodokan doesn't have them or counts a lot of variations into them. Like jigoku-jime, it looks distinguishable but I wonder if it's labeled as okuri-eri-jime or something in competition. Even Canto choke gets called okuri-eri-jime as far as I know, despite being nothing like the Kodokan's demonstration. I thought the handcuff scene was like sankaku-jime but with a better look here I don't even know what to call it so I'll take your interpretation. At some point the video started labeling sasae tsurikomi ashi as sasae tsurikomi goshi, I assume by accident since I mix up sasae tsurikomi ashi and sode tsurikomi goshi all the time. Goshi meaning hip throw, ashi meaning leg. Sode meaning sleeve and sasae meaning supporting foot. It was cool to see Shintaro Higashi with his father and Sampson judo. Cool video, one of the more comprehensive videos about the techniques.

Two general mistakes. What you call "Kaiten Nage" is the beginning (entrance) of a potential Kaiten Nage, but is not finished and ends in Ude Garami, it is not a Nage (throw) at all, but a pin. What you call "Gokkyo", is a variation of Nikkyo. Gokyo is a completely different technique. So the Kote Gaeshi - Gokkyo Pin, is either simlpy a Kote Gaeshi with a default/standard pin, or a Kote Gashi with a Nikkyo Pin. However great work. If you want I pinpoint the minutes and find some example videos.
