1--3 was amazing to watch. So many techniques and has to be a lot to learn plus hours of practice. Chapter 4 as well. I have to give Keanu Reeves all the credit he deserves as he did hours or rather weeks of training. That takes a lot of stamina and must take a lot out of you. It's all so fast in the movies and here so well explained as to know what each move is. I love watching this.

The technique labelled Rokkyo is also known as waki gatame (or more formally ude hishigi waki gatame) in both jujutsu and judo. It means "armpit pin/hold/lock." I don't know what they call it in BJJ. Rokkyo is clearly an aikido designation ("sixth teaching"), but they often also have a more descriptive name for each of the "teachings," which are often but not always the same as in other jujutsu styles (including judo).

This is a great video, thanks so much for making this! A lot of really great aikido examples in this montage. The shiho nages all over this film are my favorite, with the kokyu nages probably being the worst version of aikido techniques I saw in the film, if I was to critique it. Really great kote gaeshis as well. Aikido is an amazing weapons art. It wasnt for some time before they broke out weapons in my classes and then all of a sudden it was such a cool "wax on, wax off" moment, as every aikido technique works even better with a weapon. So you dont have to learn anything new, and can be calm and confident in the face of a weapon coming at you.
@kuzushi_kev4 ай бұрын
@@Zanshincollective thanks I’m glad you liked it! aikido makes more sense in the context of a weapon. You always hear the critique “Why would anyone grab your wrist? I would just let go of their wrist blah” .. well if the person in front of you was about to draw a sword.. you would hold onto their wrist for dear life.. and that’s when many of the techniques begin to appear.
@Zanshincollective4 ай бұрын
@@kuzushi_kev Totally! Thats also super relevant nowadays with law enforcement and reaching for a pistol, probably why a lot of law enforcement learn this stuff. One of the older senseis I know at our dojo was working as a police officer and had a crackhead reach for her gun. She instinctively did an ikkyo while backing away and just dragged her down. Even though it was the safest thing she could think to do, the woman didnt know how to fall and broke her teeth out on the concrete. Yikes!

don't forget Sambo. I mean, there is literally a scene (forgot which one of the movies) where he goes in a room with a bunch of people training in it and it is hinted that this is some of the training he got when younger.

Not to be a pedant, but the technique labelled uki otoshi in the video is actually uki waza. Uki otoshi is the throw later in the video labelled kokyu nage. Kokyu nage is more like a class of throw in aikido than one particular technique-the idea is that it's a throw executed by "breathing in" your opponent's power to then reapply it to your benefit as you breathe out.

No definitely not! You never want to sacrifice yourself by going to the floor, learn to fight on the floor, but never go to the floor to fight! Also you need to consider the weight, height, and potential strength of the opponent(s) before attempting to throw them. An old Samurai saying "A blow before a throw".......
