Every Angler Has His Day
Buoyed by my friends capture of a barbel, I am more determined than ever to try and work out how to catch a barbel for myself. With rain forecast and a rising river, I feel that the odds are in my favour but the fishing gods have other plans for me and I have to return on a number of occasions to stand a chance of catching my first Bristol Avon barbel in over a decade.

Thanks brother. I’m always torn between showing fishing for what it is or just the highlights, but as you know - it’s the gradual chipping away at the unpredictability that makes it so satisfying and somewhere along that journey, if it gets too easy, the magic gets chipped away too.

I’m delighted to have found your channel! Wonderful content, thank you! I was fishing obsessed 20 years ago, which ended up being carp, but now keen to reacquaint myself. Two questions of if I can…. 1) what local (bristol) fishing could you recommend that captures the pure essence of fishing in nature, in short dawn/dusk sessions? 2) I have an autistic 8yo son and would like to get him into fishing. Where you recommend? Again, local, easy access, quiet. For good father and son fishing experience. Thanks!

Thanks for this. Was a carp angler in my 20s myself. Nothing much has changed in angling other than more product, less patience, and fewer quiet and accessible places. Those are really interesting questions you ask. The essence of fishing is in the eye of the beholder and a personal thing. I love watching sunrise and sunsets on big waters - preferably while on it or in it, but I would really recommend Gold Valley Fishing Club in Bitton for you and your son. It's where I would choose to take mine who is the same age. It's two ponds and a slow flowing trout river in beautiful woodland settings that are very well looked after with wildlife conservation in mind. The dawn chorus is therefore amazing and it's not unusual to see deer, grass snakes and all sorts of other wildlife when fishing there. The sounds and smells that makes the fishing experience really come to life. Loads of fish to be caught too. Best approached with a whip, pole or light float rod. They might have a waiting list now, but get yourself on it and let me know if you'd like to go along as a guest. Perhaps I could bring my son along too.

Thanks. I ended up going a bit OCD until I got one. Spent two weeks wishing for rain and now wishing it would just stop. Blanked on the Somerset levels today. Which bank were you on?

I was down near the houseboats nearish to your videos from last year I think. I've managed to contact the land owner so have permission and the link to donate so will give it another try if the water ever goes down again. Congratulations on all that effort!

No I just used an open swim so no gardening needed, the plan was to stay until dark but the waterproofs weren't quite up to the job unfortunately, obviously I blanked!

@@kevinoboyle685 if I get round to cutting the dead teasel and foliage away on that corner I’ll let you know. When the water is low, it still holds nice flow along the inside bank, but when it’s chugging through like it has been of late, I find the back eddy round the corner seems to hold more fish. The bit inbetween is snaggy as hell, but I expect the fish love it.

Great Vid! Whenever i see a Barbel, it's so exciting. I thought they were pretty much gone from the River, brilliant to see. Do you mind telling me where abouts you were fishing exactly, and on which ticket/AA ?

Thanks! Most of the Bristol Avon barbel are now showing in the lower reaches downstream of Bath as opposed to the better known stretches upstream. This one was from farmland at Saltford that gave me permission to fish in return for a £5 donation to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
