Wrong. Sixth highest grossing movie of that year and highest day-to-date earning by an animated movie. By the next fiscal year it had earned 80 million dollars and over 2 billion yen. Also fastest movie to receive a criterion packaging in history.

It broke even immediately, was one of the most profitable non-disney animated anythings immediately, and the home release did record breaking stuff... immediately, at a time when the word weeaboo literally did not exist, and the word otaku was literally and only an insult.
