I aways have that same ICE filter on my bmpcc4k at all times. I knew about the IR pollution since day 1 on these cameras (all their models), so I always have it strapped in no matter if I use an ND or not. Here's another tip for you: for night city scenes, consider the ICE 82mm Lipo Light Pollution Filter ($45 on B&H), strapped in right after the ICE IR CUT filter at night (yep, both of them). You will get a clear view of night scenes, similar to what you would get from film. Remember film-shot movies, how "neutral" the night scenes always were, while with modern digital cameras, you get this extreme yellowness on everything (particularly with Sony sensors, like the BMPCC is using). Canon is the only camera that has both neutral night scenes and it does not ever require an IR CUT (even better reduction of IR than the Alexa).

Eugenia, it seems like everywhere I find content that gets one closer to the best image possible, you’re there posting the best damn advice on getting filmic results… from Gen 5 color science to “thick details” it’s incredibly valuable! I scaled by your film texture settings to be a bit more subtle to a point where it LIVES on my timeline rather than special occasions. It’s the secret sauce that imparts filmic definition and makes everything less digital/sterile looking. Thanks SO much for continuing to share your unique and powerful insights! The knowledge you sage in the comments sections on KZbin each deserve their own dedicated video on your channel.

@@EugeniaLoli so this means, if we have EOS M50 or M6 Mark ii or any Canon DSLR/DSLM new or old, we don't need the IR filter? somehow footage from Canon always looks good no matter what. But lately I have EOS M50 and sometimes I see funky output. Funky means banding in the sky which is next to impossible to get. But I still see it.

Thanks for making this video, when I was getting my pocket 4K, there was little to no information out there. I've tested the HOYA IR Cut filter on Pocket 6K and 4K and for sure, the 6K needs much more IR cut then 4K. Still nowhere near enough as URSA cameras. My biggest issue is with wide angle lenses. Once you go wider than +/- 24mm, you start to see a lot of green vignetting. Because of that, I stopped using it all together. Getting rid of the very slight cast on my 4K is so much more easier than dealing with green vignetting.

I use NiSi Cinefilters in a mattebox, and they are as clean as you can, almost no color shift. Also, vari ND will mess up your footage if you need to polarize, as it's just stacked pola's. I recommend static IRNDs and static pola, a bit more hassle, but looks so good :)

The amazing thing is that this goes all the way back to my version 1 BMCC.... and the first gen BMPCC's as well. Another thing you can use is a Tiffen T1 filter, but I found with those you end up with a great image, but have to grade out variable amounts of magenta or green in post... which is time consuming. The end image if I was using a T1 always came out great though. But I stopped using Black Magic cameras after owning 6 or 7 of them going all the way back to their first cameras.... and the IR pollution and associated hassles was one of the biggest reasons. Another was never putting a good articulating screen on them. Ugh!

Thanks. I knew this was a thing, but hadn't found a cheap solution. I saw an older cinematography workshop video where the DP, Roberto Schafer, said he didn't like how grass had red in it on digital vs. film. Maybe he had Infrared pollution and even professionals were less aware of it at the time.

Quick question. Hot mirrors and IR cut are essentially the same thing, except hot mirrors reflect IR pollution AWAY from the sensor and should be stacked on the front/top of the filter stack or furthest away from the sensor. IR cut have materials in the glass that ABSORB the IR pollution and should be stacked at the back/bottom of the stack closest to the sensor. Or is this wrong? I bought the IR cut filters you mentioned, but then realized, that I use matte boxes from PolarPro and Redrock Mirco. There's no way to stack in front of the ND on the PolarPro and, well, 4x5.56 glass of any type especially IR cut/mirrors are ex-pen-sive! lol. Thanks for the tips!

I don't know why, but I didn't had IR pollution once. I'm using my P4K with some aliexpress ND filter and my UMPG1 with internal ND, not even one single trace of IR. Maybe it has to do with the part of the world where you live. I honestly don't know.

I bought the ICE IR Cut filter partly due to this recommendation and under 5 stops of ND there was a tonne of IR pollution. Talent was wearing a black jacket that went completely magenta and noisy and there was magenta cast across the whole frame. Colours were just straight up weird. It seems to have worked for many so I can only put this down to bad quality control or something. I will never buy a cheap filter again.

Nice video! I don't understand why BM doesn't install an IR cut filter in front of their camera sensors. Does anybody know why they don't do that? I knwo that the RED sensors also don't have an IR cut filter, but they have 3 versions of IR cut filters you can buy for their RED cameras. That's a big difference for me. Is it too expensive for BM to build an IR cut filter in front of a sensor?

I recently ordered a "B+W 86mm UV Haze SC 010 Filter" on BHPhoto and its advertised as being pretty much clear, but absorbing ultraviolet light and reducing the blue cast of daylight. Would this help the IR situation at least a little bit? I don't want both filters, so should I lose this one and slap on an IR filter? I plan on using NDs in my matte box, so I'm just throwing something on the lens for protection basically. I know UV is supposed to be pretty much pointless, just got it because it was cheaper than the plain clear one (I can see a vary tiny bit of pink coating on this one, but mostly looks clear), BUT... maybe I need to just use an IR filter for protection instead... just not sure its THAT much more functional than a blue cast removing UV filter that I already have (plus a bit of tweaking in post). But if it needs to be done... ugh, maybe I'll cancel the second UV filter I just ordered before watching this video, and sell the one I just picked up from FedEx today. (Or keep on as a back up... the new one I got was only 20, originally 89. Bought both used.)

If you're still deciding, I compared my pocket 6k to my mate's fx3, the fx3 is definitely an amazing camera and is crazy good in low light. I personally would have gotten the fx3 if I had the budget for it as I'm already a Sony shooter and it's definitely easier to use, however, it does not beat the pocket 6k in image quality.
