She's also a sex worker. She's a worker, just like Slowik believes he is. But Slowik also feels he's been a whore, and that's something he's punishing himself for. He's split the room into two kinds of whore, those who have escaped the need to whore and those who must whore to live. In the end Margot chooses neither, but is simply hungry. She has come to a restaurant to eat. Slowik's purity test fulfilled, she leaves.

23:32 He's not only nervous, he doesn't know how to cook. He's devotedly follows Slowik and knows about cooking methods but he has no actual skills or experience because he only watched and didn't actually cook for himself (probably because he's rich too). Slowik knew this or saw through it and thus humiliated him - expecially because he dared to bring Erin with him knowing she'd die. Noticed how the person how draws her back into her seat after she punches Tyler rubs her shoulder sympathetically. Slowik and his staff may be cultish murderers but even they are appalled at what Tyler has done. Everyone is!

So in the script, it just called for Margot to sit there and cry upon finding out Tyler brought her there knowing she was going to die. Anya herself said no, and that's how we got her just straight up losing her shit on him. Here's the full quote: "I have a thing about feminine rage. Which people think for some reason and this is no disrespect to any writer - I get a lot of, like, 'men doing really terrible things' and women sitting silently while one tear slowly falls. And I'm like, "Oh no no no no no. We get mad, and angry."

"What school did you go to?" "Brown." "Student loans?" "No." "I'm sorry. You're dying." XD Tyler acted so smart about food, but he knew nothing about making it. His pretentiousness and his bringing Margot/Erin to die disgusted Slowik, who humiliated him and(in my eyes)whispered that he would never be like them. Slowik seemed mean when he told Erin she wasn't supposed to be there, like it was for rich people or something. But it was true and he most likely didn't want to kill her. Erin gave Slowik something he lost for years, the joy of cooking a good meal for a customer who loved it(she saw the picture of Slowik only smiling in the picture when he worked at the burger joint). Slowik dropping the fire on the floor:Avada Kedavra...

I love how this film was a satirical look at how specific types of consumers/artists suck the joy out of that particular art form. Each table/person represents all the different reasons that passion is being lost/discarded in terms of art. 1. The snobby critics who are never pleased and believe their opinion is just, who sometimes ruin the livelihoods of others based on their disingenuous opinions 2. The people who don't really care/have an appreciation for what they're consuming and just consume because they can 3. The ones who only consume art because of social status/because they can afford it 4. The artist who only performs for a paycheck and not because they actually care etc. The Chef is my favorite character. He represents the artist who has lost his passion for creating art. All these people represent what is wrong with modern day critics/artists and consumption of the art the artist produces. They have destroyed him and his craft in some way. At times you fear him, and feel empathetic towards him. It was actually interesting how he locked away a picture of himself cooking burgers. A simpler time when he enjoyed his craft, before he became dead inside. He's locked that away literally and figuratively in his heart believing he can no longer experience that again. In the end his last moments were him being able to cook with love again, with an average consumer. It wasn't complex, or even the best food one can get, but it tastes good not just because he knows what he's doing, but because of how full of life he was when making a good meal. Even the average consumer can have an appreciation for the art they consume.

In another part of the original script, it mentions a) Chef was found running a taco truck outside a Food Expo, and it was "the happiest he'd ever been", and Lillian ruined that with the interview that made Hawthorne into a reality. b) Margot calling him out on the fact that he parked his taco truck outside the Food Expo KNOWING Food critics were going to be there.

The musical score was so good. Colin Stetson did an amazing job with it. Felt like a mix of Midsommar with hints of Hereditary. Loved that the pizzicato strings was the main star of the show. I am a sucker for those playful-like orchestral strings. There are still those dissonant kind of sounds in the music as well but plays kind of a more supporting role here. Found out that one of the instruments used was the nyckelharpa, which given the context made sense. I also liked the choir parts as well. One moment, you're very relaxed and feel at piece. The next, the vibe changes.

This is my favorite movie of the year. I sadly think it will be overlooked when the Oscars hit. Personally I think Chef whispered to Tyler the pathetic reality of his lack of self identity. Wanting to be part of something, to the point of murderous obsession while still not accepting that he wasn't deserving. He made Tyler admit to himself he wasn't worthy of being there for the dinner, so Tyler removed himself from the event. I did get a chuckle when you said "it's not fair, you can't just decide who gets to live and who dies based on privilege and wealth." I mean, come on, the privileged and wealthy have been deciding who gets to live and who dies for a long, long time... maybe it is fair to flip the script? lol

That argument can also apply to the spectacled guy with Lillian Bloom lady (the one who reviewed badly about restaurants). He somehow irritated me more than even Tyler. Yeah, except the thing is that, people like you, in your rush to go "haha! yeah! get those rich bastards!", overlook something that Chef Slowik was actually very aware of himself. He's in that priviledged and wealthy group! I mean think about it, he's the world famous head chef of a restaurant that serves 12 customers a night on a private island and charges 4 figures per guest. He isn't effing poor! When you reach that level in the culinary world you can't even totally honestly be called working class, really. If he's lost his passion for being a chef he could just leave. There was even a deleted scene where Lillian says that he once did and she found him working in a taco truck on LA, then when she wrote about it Doug Verrick offered him the investment that led to Hawthorne being created. Well there was nothing stopping him from leaving again. He could go back to his taco truck where he's serving simple food to average people who just want a nice lunch rather than an elite dining experience that they're too full of themselves to appreciate. Or he could retire from cooking and reconnect with the family we saw in the photos in his room...travel the world...become a food critic himself and dethrone Queen Lillian Bloom. After decades as one of the top chefs in the world there's virtually no chance he doesn't have the money and connections to accomplish any of that. So why didn't he? Because his ego couldn't take it. He needed that adulation, eventhough he was self-aware enough to know it was making him miserable. He couldn't give it up though. He thrived on, but was also tortured by, having the worship of foodies, and critics, and sous chefs. He hated them but also couldn't live without their approval, which made him hate himself just as much. That's why he saw murder/suicide as his only option. He's not some socioeconomic justice warrior. He's just a cult leader. He's just as bad as the rest of them and he knows it! He even said so. Remember "I'm part of the problem" That's why he died too. This isn't some flip of the script when it comes to the rich vs everyone else. If anything it was the rich eating each other.

I've never worked the service industry (i could never survive it...), but I imagine this movie was very cathartic for people who have.

I am a 32 italian cook and to me this makes PERFECT sense. Those bull$$$$ art of cousine with mini portions that make no sense at all based on a minimalistic trascendence from pictorial art. "oh the emultion is split!" Once I had a tourist that demanded persistently to have parmesan cheese on spaghetti with seafood (which is a NO, NO, NO). I swear we were about to replicate the exact copy of this film. E magna sto cheeseburger e non rompere il cazzo, santo iddio.

You're spot on for Erin/Margo being let go for not having been invited BUT one theory is that the meat was part of the meat the one gal mentioned at beginning had to be selected at a specific date before it was toxic. So perhaps (dark theory) Chef did let her go and poisoned her to complete his work but letting her experience the illusion of control. But I like to believe the former that she earned escape. And agree Midsommar which is folk horror vs. this is dark comedy "eat the rich" horror. But definitely some darkness and great satire of uber trendy restaurant not about the actual food and enjoyment.

It surprises me how many people I’ve watched question why the staff were all on board the whole way through when the first third of the movie explains it so well. They live in a small, joyless barracks crammed together like sardines on an isolated island, with workdays that only allow for four hours of personal time/sleep, with all the pressure and expectation of high level celebrity chef cooking but none of the recognition or respect, under the (completely standard for the industry) tyrannical rule of a joyless Chef in pursuit of impossible perfection. The food industry has one of the highest suicide rates in the world because the pressure is insane.

Its possible that Margot actually dies at the end. In the beginning of the movie they mention the beef was aged 152 days, at 153 days you would end up dead. They mention that service ends at 2am. They arrive at day 152, but when Margot gets her burger it's at day 153 at 2 am. Chef did day that everyone was dying that night.

So, here's some insight on the actor and the assistant. Slowik wanted to kill the actor because his performance in the movie represented how a talented artist can do subpar work for the sake of a quick buck. This parallels Slowik selling out and not caring when it came to his cooking. Moving on to the assistant. By going to Brown (an Ivy League college) with no financial aid implies that she (or at least, her family) is wealthy and well connected. Therefore, when she admits to stealing money from her boss, she shows how scummy and entitled she is.

31:56 The chef used to make cheeseburgers at the place the one lady reviewed which almost tanked his career. There has been messages throughout this entire film, yet you never caught on to a single one of them. She suggested a cheeseburger not to piss him off but to spark the love he used to have for cooking for a woman who has challenged him every step of the which no other has. He died peacefully in spirit knowing he made someone happy while finally being able to cook happy himself.
