Men don't tend to get appearance-based compliments as much, even if they're particularly good-looking and/or stylish. Women, on the other hand, don't get as many compliments for personality, even if they deserve it. This makes appearance-based compliments feel special to many men, and personality-based compliments feel special to many women. If you want to treat someone with a particularly nice compliment, try it out.
@fwoop4848Ай бұрын

As a gal, I told a guy last week that I really enjoyed his comments in class, and that they always offered a perspective I hadn't previously thought of. He said he was always worried they were dumb comments and I was shocked, as someone who had to pluck up the courage to even look him in the eye. It just taught me that I need to be a little bit braver, cause men are amazing and they need it.
@Mr60GoldАй бұрын
Building up courage is an amazing thing to do, it will help you a lot in life. I remember when I was in School, there was a group of boys that would often be mean to me as I was the teacher's pet to put it simply, honestly I wouldn't call it bullying as I know people had much worse than me so it was just my young self overreacting to mean comments but when I on occasion met them solo, outside of their group, they were actually very chill people, they acted differently in their group as they wanted to be with the cool kids, acting much more rebellious than they otherwise were when alone as they didn't have the courage to just be themselves in fear of being the ones to get bullied instead. For me personally, courage (or lack there of) really wrecked my teen years, a friend of mine was bullied and I didn't stand up for her as I feared getting into trouble, eventually our friendship ended and I don't blame her, back then I was an awful friend to her with lots of low self esteem that I just dumped on her without giving support back, a leech that I am surprised even had friends back then as I wouldn't want to be friends with my past self even if I was kind, I was not super supportive outside of giving compliments back then. Even now courage is something I struggle with, I would like to learn dancing, but I fear I might be too old to start learning and there are no classes in my town. But I am starting to divulge and talk about myself, my point is, that building up courage is a very good thing to do, it will keep your friendships, help woth relationships and for your goals, build it up as early as you can as without it your life might take a very different path, not necessarily for the worst but you might miss out on things or do things you regret.

@@Khetomi1not a teenager myself anymore (I am 20, close to 21) however I am really glad to hear people like yourself improving your courage during years that I wish I would've done so. The best advice I can give is to just be yourself, hiding your true self under a metaphorical mask really does a number on your courage as you become scared to show who you really are, what you enjoy, etc. Once you get the courage to start doing something, it becomes easier to do so. For instance, back when I was in year 8 or 9, in Drama class we had to do a quick act as a Halloween monster, I had not prepared anything as I just did not have the courage to even do such a thing in private, but when all focus was on me I just sucked it up and started, the beginning was stiff but once I began my mentality changed to "well you are in it now, at least do your best", to my surprise I did really well. This extended to public speeches, and other activities, if only I had realised that sooner I might've ended up studying Drama as I actually quite enjoyed it. If you have something that interests you like learning to dance, art, game design, costume making, anything at all, my best advice is to just go and attempt it, the first step is always the hardest but actually taking it can give a massive boost to your courage and make you explore yourself. Best of luck with your teen years, just remember to be yourself, don't be scared to explore new things (within reason, don't start stealing to explore what theft is like or anything of sorts), try to be your best self, one that you can look back at with pride.

I do naturally have quite curly hair, so I didn't really know how to respond because I wasn't expecting it. I just said that it was indeed natural, and that was the end of the interaction. It always stuck with me though. The 2nd one wasn't really a one time occurance, but I still count them as one compliment. So ever since (coincidentally also) 9th grade I've been consistently getting compliments about how well I can speak english. It's not an official language in my country, but we do get a good amount of english classes at school. However, me being an introvert and having spent 90% of my teenage life on the internet, I'd say I'm quite good at it, and almost consider myself fully bilingual at this point. But in the beginning I always surprised my classmates with how well I could speak it, so I got a fair amount of compliments on it. However, I've gotten it so many times that I've gotten used to it, and it's not as special anymore. I've only received that compliment like 5 or 10 times max, so it really wasn't that often but compliments are at their best when they're about something you didn't know people liked about you, so cherish the ones you do get.

man, i remember about six months ago, i was at this amusement park with some friends, and we were in line for this ride. the ride is set up in such a way that you can give high fives to people on the ride as its starting, while youre in line. So after i dish out a few to some people, this girl in line right in front of me turns around and says," you're cool, i like you" and gives me a fist bump. Guess i was kinda shocked because i didnt really say anything to her. I had a few chances when i saw her later that day, but i just waved to her once. Really wish i would have tried to talk to her more. That moment was literally all i thought about for like a week.

A good way to increase your compliment count is by standing out. I have a black feathered tricorne I sometimes wear, and the amount of compliments and positive acknowledgment I get rises immensely! Same goes for other noteworthy stuff. And if you want compliments from girls, make yourself nonthreatening, the reason girls don't give guys many compliments is fear of that guy obsessing over that and it ending BADLY (fair), and guys don't give out many compliments because they either think it's gay (boo), or they don't know how (fair, but go practice ya dingus), so stand out nonthreateningly, like wearing a skirt.

Finally someone gets it! I give out lots of compliments to my male friends, and consequentally I've been asked out by at least a third of them at some point or another. Just like how some girls assume every compliment from a guy is flirting, some guys can assume the same thing. And in either case, it's always awkward. As for standing out, that's quite true as well! @peterlewis2178Ай бұрын
@@johncatson6658 It's kind of a chicken and the egg scenario. A lot of guys don't compliment girls because it will seem like they're hitting on them, which means that when guys do compliment girls, they're usually hitting on them. Which then in turn reinforces the expectation, and means that guys don't compliment girls because it'll look like they're hitting on them. Now that I think about it, though, we could so easily break out of that cycle by just saying "I'm not remotely trying to hit on you, but [insert compliment here]". Of course, that doesn't work so well when you're actually attracted to the girl, because then it feels like you're slightly lying.

Your feelings are valid, I see how men and boys receive less compliments on their appearance. Also I wanna say, rarely has a guy not mistaken a compliment of mine for flirting, so I have calmed down on complimenting guys. On the other hand, I don't think I've received many compliments from guys that weren't transactional. Maybe guys could try to compliment other people more (including other guys). Just an idea
@sethyoder7996Ай бұрын
I agree. And tbh I think the main reason a lot of guys don't is exactly the reason you mentioned, not wanting to come off as flirting or it seeming weird. I often see people even at the gym where is isn't weird to compliment someone on their appearance, but I don't say anything because it'd seem kinda weird if I did. And that's just about guy to guy, if it was a girl especially of a similar age?! Hell nah man, scary. Only way to do it safely is just a comment in passing, that way even if they do get weirded out by it at least you're already going your separate ways.
@crescent_asunaАй бұрын
Tbh, I haven't received any unprompted comments about my appearance from guys. I have complimented guys before, and they give me a compliment back or ask me for my number (transaction/perceived flirt). At least, nobody has called me ugly directly to my face; I am thankful for that!

@dawee6196Ай бұрын
You’re not wrong, and it’s definitely not an easy issue to solve. I think a big part of it is that girls often hold back from complimenting guys because they don’t want it to come across as flirty. Then, when a guy does finally receive a compliment, it means so much to him because he gets them so rarely that he assumes it’s something special-and the cycle just keeps going. Also, guys usually receive more compliments on their achievements, while girls tend to get more on their looks. I feel like it’s not really fair to either side.
