The sad thing about this is that everyone here gets revived as spirits wandering the universe, except for the animals, Ide doesn't care about that. Deck's Squirrel and the farm animals didn't get to appear later

we often joke that "hideaki anno was one of the 5 fans of Victory Gundam and ZZ", because Evangelion also had a lot of homages/inspiration from those as well, it's quite sad that eva was the kid that repeated the same joke but louder, except that in this case, it was only because evangelion was broadcasted to the rest of the world and ideon wasn't

Considering how Anno always shows his love for series that inspired him to the point of even working at those products (like Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Raider and now even Space Battleship Yamato), I'm not surprised that now they gave him access to work at the new Gundam TV series with GQuuuuuuX.

In Episode 18, around 14:45 and just before the scene with the girl and her dog blown away, there are several people standing near the building and inside it. Among them are Conan and Jimsy from Future Boy Conan standing to the left, and some other characters I haven't recognized.

They're fighting for control of a mega super robot called Ideon. It starts with the protagonists accidentally finding it and defend themselves from pursue of an enemy faction, and although that power is intimidating as hell, the only be thing bigger than the enemy's fear is their greed to acquire that power themselves. The machine almost fuels itself with the desire to wage war upon each other. Eventually that power crave drives the antagonists to build a super weapon of their own, they collide and the cataclysm resets the universe

And about the resource need, there's StarCraft and the Protons race. This is a species that was perfect in self sustainability of the body, not needing food, only sunlight and negligible water/humidity , yet they entered the biggest civil conflict that almost wiped out their race for purely religious reasons

It's an allegory for mutually assured destruction. Remember that this came out during the height of the Cold War. And the main driver of the show is the Buff Clan and Solo Ship refusing to back down, refusing to negotiate, always trying to 1-up each other out of revenge... kinda like the US and Soviet Union (although we never directly fought, we damn near killed ourselves so many times that one guy got a medal for not launching nukes when their equipment showed false bogeys). Lest we forget that Tomino grew up in immediate post-Imperial Japan. Dude is old. He's seen firsthand how shitty war and its consequences are.
