I for one think that there's still potential for desert planets in Star Wars. A battle in a Grand Canyon sized ravine would be impressive to see. (I also just realized that Alex forgot Ryloth.)

There was a Star Wars: Battlefront II (original) custom fan-made map that was exactly as you describe -- a battle in a dusty ravine, with AT-ATs on one side, and a rebel cell on the other.

@Justin O. @Mit Whit Gaming Bit late of a response from me, sorry, but I think a short story in the ebook version of Tarkin+New Dawn set on Ryloth had mention of Jungles. Which is, a) pretty obscure, and b) must be really really limited to the equator, cause we deffinately see a desert climate and terrain on most of the planet. But if Savereen passes, I think so does Ryloth, that short was a bit weird, placing the jungle + mountain close to the capital. :)

Moraband will always be Korriban to me it's the most intresting desert planet in star wars as long they bring back sith force ghosts. Hopefully no more tatooine or tatooine clones for awhile I'd like to see more non desert planets introduced into cannon it would be awsome to see less earthlike planets and get something way more alien looking with colors you wouldnt normally see in nature on earth

Wouldn't Hoth qualify? It's just as much a wasteland as Antarctica! The Canon bio on Wookiepeeia says that Mandalore is a, "breathable but inhospitable desert planet." (previously agricultural,) (Glad you mentioned Abafar lol I'm hoping for the next standalone/backstory movie to be, "Colonel Meebur Gascon, a Star Wars Story.")

Precipitation DOES happens quite frequently on Hoth enough for it to not be called a desert or an arid planet, maybe in some areas but definitely not all of it. In both "The Empire Strikes Back" and a plethora of many other visual visits to Hoth it is seen with Blizzards which are a form of Precipitation, not just rain. Second of all, you no nothing about me, my age, or how much education/academic experience I have. That final sentence is undeniable rude and uncalled for when I have not done anything to purposefully anger you and is sign of if not physical then mental and physiological immaturity. I could be 30 years older then you with a PHD for all you know and you could be 10 years old or 90 for all I know. I had a civil disagreement and you decided to overreact over something of little importance for either of our lives. If a planet can support little or no rain, or other means of precipitation, it's considered a desert. Savareen, seemed to be quite a case, having an Ocean that big, means that it have storms that can support heavy rain, so it shouldn't be theoretically a desert planet. You should instead insert Hoth. Hoth have ice storms yes, but they are caused by temperature and pressure difference, not precipitation. Yes I'm a nerd

I think Earth would need it's surface to be 90% or more covered in water to be an ocean plant instead of about 3/4 plus the extreme biome diversity which is extremely rare in both Star Wars and to our current knowledge IRL, making more of a continental or multi-biome world. However there was a time billions of years ago where this was the case.

I think you might be missing some. Ilum: Unless the rumors are true and Ilum and Starkiller Base are one in the same because Starkiller does have a lot of trees, I'd argue that Ilum is a desert in the same vain that Antarctica is a desert. Just because it's snowy doesn't mean it's not a desert. If we count Ilum, we count Orto Plutonia: Yes there's life, but again, it seems very inhospitable, and we don't ever see anything on it other than the Talz and their creatures. (But much like the behind-the-scenes stuff, then what are they burning for fire?) Hoth: Kind of iffy, but again, life doesn't seem to live on the surface. Tauntauns must live in caves like the Wampas in order to survive the nights. Mandalore: It became a desert after years of war. People have to live in domed cities. Well, they don't have to, but your chances of survival is better in them than out. Quarzite: If we follow the same logic as the Wellspring of Life and Crait, I'd argue that the planet is a desert because life is more supported below the surface because the pressure of the atmosphere above. Zardossa Stix: It's a moon, but it is a desert one. Malachor: Because it's a weird force planet with nothing on it. It's a wasteland. Maybe Agamar: Canon and Legends have different interpretations. Canon has it being very rocky.

I think we need to have a conversation as to what a desert it. A desert is a landmass that suffers from a cronic lack of rainfall. Although sand deserts are the typical and traditional kinds of deserts, large areas of ice that also see little/no rainfall are also deserts. Also their is a strong correlation between the amount of rainfall a area sees and the amount of life it supports, deserts are not classified as such based on the amount of life they support in their respective geographical biome.

I'd argue that Parnassos, despite once being lush and having a known ocean, is a desert planet after the nuclear event that ruined the surface. Also, Utapau is a desert on the surface, if not in the sink-holes.

The definition of a desert for climate purposes is one that receives an average of less than 10% average annual precipitation, and a mean average temperature of around 64 degrees Fahrenheit for a hot desert, and 32 or around 26 degrees Fahrenheit for a cold desert. Antarctica is an example of a cold desert.

I'm curious, how does the number of non-desert planets compare to the number of desert planets? Also how much life does Hoth support to not qualify as a desert planet? My father's big complaint about the OT is that, barring Special Edition cameos, the only place with decent life seems to be Endor's moon.

I think Hoth counts. Even Wampas and Tauntauns don't can't survive out in the cold

To all the people pondering on whether Hoth is a desert. Technically you can have *Polar Deserts* (also known as Cold Deserts or Ice Deserts) they are vast regions of land which fall under the ice cap climate. They are covered in ice shields, ice fields, ice caps and sometimes glaciers. Since these environments exist at *sub-zero* temperatures there is no *Liquid Water* and a thin blanket of snow layers on the Surface. Therefore Hoth could be considered a Polar Desert but not a Desert.

Thanks noting all of these places. I'm not big on all these sandy, barren worlds. Some of them look cool, but when the default planet is "desert," it says "lack of creativity" to me. It's sci-fi! Show us things we've never seen before! (Not you, SWE; the people drawing/creating these worlds.)

A desert is actually a place where there is very little moisture. Even tundras count as deserts as they have little moisture.

Though it is technically an ice planet, any environment that is considered hostile and life threatening can be a desert. Thus HOTH fits the definition of a desert a planet. It had only 2 native species...Tontons and Yetibeasts (carnivores)
