Speedbags are primarily for training handfighting patterns with massive numbers of reps in quick succession (something most people are terrible at), and developing power with short, small movements (you’ve got to watch a guy like Marcos Maidana on the speedbag to understand this) If you have a speedbag mounted in a way where you can move around it 360 degrees, you can develop your handfighting patterns with their associated footwork. It’s going to be much harder to do that on a wall mounted speedbag, but you can always use the power of imagination. Hand eye coordination is the least of your concerns on the speedbag since you can do it blindfolded. It’s one of my favorite tools of all time.
@fireeaglefitnessmartialart9353 жыл бұрын
I've been practicing with the speedbag at the fitness gym. Only real issue is I can't adjust the height and need a platform to stand high enough which limits my feet position. But I've been getting better and even "discovered" some new-ish patterns I wouldn't have thought I could on a speedbag. Plus some of the patterns I saw you demonstrate in a video like a yr ago.
@wernerfuhry3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ramsey for saying this. Generelly shocked and dissapointet at Seth for such a superficial "review" about the speed bag. Besides boxing, pretty much every other striking art would benefit from it. Wouldn't mind if Seth said "I tried it and it is not for me" (kinda like he did with the double end bag), but not even really trying it and claiming they are useless, while not even researching what they train... like what's next Seth, no touch bs has it's place? Come on... Also if you wanna train your knuckles, just hit the bag bare fist, no jeed for building a wooden planck on a heavy base with some leather around the top (makiwara)..

I think a makiwara is best at developing proper form in a punch. If you have a bend in your wrist, or a hike in your shoulder, or your elbow wings out, you will find out right away on a makiwara. In addition it toughens your hands and joints, and develops power, but you can get all that on a heavy bag too.

Another useful application: learning how to act when your head-kick just stops. Bob is probably the best target out there if you want to get a feel for what it's like to have your kicking leg get stuck on top of your opponent's shoulder ridge, and how to recover your balance afterward. Good practice for jumping kicks in particular.

(Former boxer here) What I'd say about the heavy bag is make sure you're not primarily using it for your training, if you eventually plan on fighting. It can make you develop a lot of bad habits and give you a false impression of how good you really are. If it's just for working out, then who cares. But if you really want to master technique and blending good defense with your offense, use it to supplement already instilled good habits; developing power, working reps, etc. I only say this because a lot of people just hang a heavy bag and call it good.

I've had experience with almost every bag in your illustration. Back in the day, the heavy bag was the gold standard. I personally like the Century Wavemaster with the water base. Yes, it doesn't allow calf kicks, but it's easy to own and use. The double end bag is very good, and the speed bag is fun. I could probably adapt to any of the larger hanging bags filled with whatever as long as they have decent weight. If you have the space at home one heavy bag that hangs and one that reaches the floor is ideal. Thank you! PS: I have arms on my BOB.
@gronith3 жыл бұрын
Those uppercut heavy bags are ideal as long as you get a fairly long heavy one. You can hit them with punches and kicks in the same range. You don't have to slide back to kick. I think this is why many high-level kickboxing competitors choose them for their home gyms.

Hitting the bob without gloves is great for improving the angles at which your hands make contact with the target. The heavy bag is very easy to hit without hurting your wrist especially with gloves. The speed bag is vital for developing defensive movements and hand fighting for boxing/long range punching. Ramsey Dewey had some good videos on how to use the speed bag. Even if you don’t use Ramsey’s techniques you need to train Jack Dempsey’s speed bag “kata:” “left backhand hammerfist, right punch, right backhand hammerfist, left punch....repeat for ten minutes every day.” This will teach you to ward off punches. You can also use the speed bag to train head shots. As opposed to the heavy bag which trains body shots. In fact, old timey boxers called it a “light punching bag” instead of a speed bag.

i love bob it's really great for practicing kicks. i probably did hundreds of taekwondo middle kick into ?kick with a paddle taped to his shoulder simulating a guard. way better than doing it on 2 paddles as we usually do in training

Our favourite bag so far is the big Tripod (VS 3) bag from Century. We have 1 in our home dojo, & plan to get a second at some point. I've been training in Eskrima-Kali-Arnis, & Karate since 1987. *Our young cat likes to climb on it, so it doubles as an expensive cat tree

You also have the banana bag, which is the long one at muay thai gyms, and the tear drop bag

I would get a heavy bag but I live in a 2 bedroom apartment so I would probably get a the BOB, free standing bag or the aqua bag. Great video by the way

Bob are amazing for kicking to the head. It conditions the nerves better for hitting skin than the others

I agree with you about bob. I’d like to add ways to improve him: 1. His head is light and neck is flexible so there’s no rebound to help bounce your jab back to a guard position. You hafta put more energy into yanking your hand back and it feels slow and awkward. 2. He’s always upright so uppercuts are near impossible without hitting his chest. I put a 2x4 under the rear to make him lean a little forward but a redesign would be better. 3. Since we’re going with the whole human body motif, I’d like some arms - preferably adjustable - to work on going around, over, and through his guard, maybe even a philly shell option. Also, whatever we do can have boring down time - watching tv has commercials, hitting a bag needs rest breaks. So I combine them and intermittently work out on bob during commercials throughout the day while I watch tv. Also, I don’t fill bob up to the top so he moves more. That way I can have easy casual workouts without having to always wear wraps and gloves. You can still slightly tear your knuckles with bare punches so try to punch directly and not “swipe” your skin across the rubber. Also, palm strikes are fun with bob. I also wrapped a foam mattress around his base for leg kicks - not awesome, but entertaining during commercials and friends reruns.

Speed bags are actually good for high kicks as well for targeting and practicing your high kicks.

I remember the first time I saw an aqua bag, I jab cross turning kicked it. Felt like someone whipped me across my shin and instep definatly just for punching.
