The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.

BJ Armstrong. He was the best PG of the Bulls dynasty. Extremely clutch and efficient.

I was going to add BJ to the list. I think Ron Harper was the better defender than BJ, but omg BJ was not bad on D and he was SO efficient -- he was a problem both from 2 and 3 -- his 3 point shooting especially when everyone was gassed in the 93 season of the first 3-peat and he was also the main guy who played all 82 games. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for why suddenly it was lethal to not cover the other players on the floor. In fact he was far more dangerous than Pip and Grant out in the 3 point range back then. Paxson was great too and got a ton of cred because he has that one highlight shot that MJ fed him, but I think BJ had SO many in that last season of the 3peat when Paxson was out for a lot of it -- so Paxson gets a lot of the credit BJ doesn't get, even though BJ was there for nearly a quarter of the games that Pax missed. He also hit 50/40/90 in the playoffs... not bad for a nobody on the team, amirite? I mean I think that the Bulls should get TWO dynasty picks -- and I'm fine with Ron Harper being on the list for the 2nd 3-peat, but they won two separate strings of 3 games in that decade and they really were two different rosters. So I think for the first one it's BJ and the second it's Ron. And if you're going to go by who is the MOST underrated I think it's Ron personally... not because I'm comparing the two over who is better. But for real, I think sadly aside from old-heads and nerds that if you ask people who were on that roster they're more likely to remember Kukoc than Harper for sure.

Yup. He was Lebron’s parole 👮‍♂️ officer in the 2007 Finals and held him to 35% FG, 14.8% mid range shooting , 20% 3pt and made him average almost as many turnovers as assists that series.

Mark Aguirre of the Detroit Pistons. He was the sixth man, replacing Adrian Dantley. He went from being one of the lead leaders in scoring to being basically a 3 and D player on both the back-to-back Piston teams. Very underrated.

I know he was apart of only the 2015 Warriors championship run but I think Andrew Bogut should be on here. Great screen-setter, great rim protector, and most importantly a great passing big man, especially in that system. Him going down in the 2016 Finals was in my opinion the biggest reason why the Cavaliers were able to come back from that 3-1 deficit. If not him, then Shaun Livingston. People recognize him as a great mid range shooter, but don’t talk enough about how solid his defense was for Golden State.

agree, when they first made noise in the post season, it was when they got Bogut. i remember they hated him but for me, he was the best fit C. Defense, hustle, lob threat, no need to hvee the ball. Fit perfectly into the GSW heavy movement offense.

Dennis Johnson is so underrated man, so good defensively, was amazing with Seattle, and consistent as hell with Boston. I never hear him come up as one of the best guards in league history but he really was terrific.

Michael Cooper is a very good pick for the Showtime lakers. HOWEVER, no one remembers Jamaal Wilkes who won 3 rings with that team, made 2 all-star teams with the Lakers and is a literal Hall of Famer. He has similar career stats to Hall of Famer James Worthy in points, rebounds and assists, but everyone remembers worthy, and no one remembers Wilkes.

Another interesting statistic on the Bulls' dynasty is they had three all-time top 25 steals leaders. Jordan (4), Pippen (7), and Harper (25). Imagine having three all-time top 25 players in any statistical category on a single team. If it was points you'd have Kobe Bryant (4), Wilt Chamberlain (7), and James Harden (25). Just trying to put that statistic into context of how insane it was. Harper is most definitely underrated.

Sam Jones was the prototype for a sharpshooter. The original great no.24. DJ was the glue guy PG for those celtics teams. A beast and a killer. Love the recognition. 🎉

I thought Shaw was quietly underrated on the Lakers in the 2000s, hit many outside shots along with Fisher. I like that the role players are getting some love as they are the silent engines that get teams over the top in most cases. Bobby Jackson on the Kings was also a real good player, he was a shooting/scoring machine that gave the Lakers lots of trouble. I thought I`d mention him because he never gets any attention for how good he played, generally speaking. Kings are possibly a quiet dynasty that never was.

Can't argue Shaw, but really Rick Fox is virtually forgotten by everyone but Lakers fans His wing defense wasn't elite, but he did his job well on that end of the floor, and maybe not as much or Iconic big shots as Fish or Horry, but Rick was a Extremely important key to that entire Shaq/Kobe/Phil era

Harper was the man, but what about Horace? Horace Grant was the rebounding/defensive monster that the Bulls needed at the PF position during their 1st three peat. People seem to forget that Rodman played the exact same position as Grant and won the exact same amount of titles, no more and no less, than Grant did with the Bulls.

Switching from Grant to Rodman for the second three-peat was definitely an even exchange, not an upgrade. Grant is criminally underrated.

@@jp3813 Well yeah of course. That was his absolute specialty. I would even say that Rodman was a better defender. Albeit not by much. But Grant was nowhere near as close to a one demential player as Rodman was. Grant could get you 15 on 55% shooting whenever MJ and Pippen (or Shaq and Penny) needed a third scorer. He was a good 3 inches taller (that matters). He never got technical’s. He never got ejected. He never kicked cameramen. He never needed to randomly go to Vegas in the middle of the season. He never had to be benched when he was healthy because his coach couldn’t trust him not to do something that would get him suspended. He never engaged in the type of behavior that made his coach and teammates fearful of what he might do next. I guarantee you you that almost every GM from the 80s and 90s would, if given the chance, draft Grant over Rodman if they knew what their futures would be.

@@jp3813 Oh my God yes! The way he guarded Shaq was insane. None of his negatives were physical, they were all in between his ears. He was the T.O and Randy Moss of the NBA. But his mental problems were absolutely not insignificant. One of the reasons why the Bulls acquired him so easily, was because no one else really wanted him. Think about that. Both Shaq and David Robinson called him the worst teammate they ever had. And they weren’t wrong. The fact that he contributed nothing on offense was irrelevant compared to what he gave you with defense and rebounding. His successful 3 year run with the Bulls has really caused his overall career to be overrated in my opinion. He was a straight up locker room cancer. That’s something that isn’t reflected in his numbers. I’m old enough that I actually saw his career. The average Bulls fan was not overjoyed when they signed him. It was more like “Oh crap, I hope this doesn’t backfire”. And to Rodman’s credit, it didn’t. But as to my original point. He was not an upgrade from Horace Grant. It was really Toni Kukoč and Steve Kerr that made the 2nd threepeat Bulls better than the 1st.

Ron Harper is a great pick for the Bulls. He is often forgotten especially on the defensive end as Chicago had two of the best perimeter defenders in the game which are Jordan and Pippen.

I think Cooper has been getting his flowers more recently. That would also be true of DJ as well. He is always credited as the “Late Great DJ” and mentioned as the best player Bird ever played with. Every Celtic remembers him as essential to their success. He did get HOF recognition as well. Thank you for sharing your vast basketball knowledge with all of us. Micheal Cooper, Ron Harper, Bruce Bowen, Derek Fisher, Kevon Looney. Are all valuable underrated players in all the modern dynasties for the back to back teams Sam Cassell and Shane Battier come to mind

Agree on all except the last two. Bowen because he was indeed a dirty player that constantly looked to undercut players on their jump shots and to make matters worse, tried pleading to the refs like he was the victim. Iggy because he was actually named Finals MVP over Curry, who statistically had a better series, so voters understood the impact Andre had on the outcome.

There doesn't HAVE TO be a most underrated player for every dynasty. Sometimes guys are appropriately rated and people bring up names just to do it. This is especially the case with a franchise like the Spurs which has always done a good job at surrounding their main player with 1-2 good-to-great second options and a bunch of complimentary players that know their role.

As someone who grew up a Vince Carter fan i hate Bruce Bowen so much 😂 he was good but too dirty of a player. In my opinion he cost the raptors a playoff spot in the 2004 season, that year mid way through the season the Raptors had a 25-28 record and because Bowen Injured Vince the Raptors went 0-6 the next 6 games and 25-34 became to much of hill to climb for the Raptors. They ended 3 games out of the last playoff spot. Also Vince Carter was on pace for his Career high in Points in the Nets game Bowen step under Carter. He had 43 points in 3 quarters and had 10 point lead and because Bowen try to injure Vince and Vince went after Him, Carter got ejected and the Spurs won by 10 and Carter ended with 43. So basically Bowen Robbed Vince Carter fans of a playoff spot and probably what was gonna be Vince’s best scoring performance of his career. So yeah Bowen sucks 😂

They probably aren't considered a dynasty since they only won 1 title, but the late 70s-early 80s 76ers were consistently in the title hunt that I feel like they are one of the most important teams in league history. So with that said, I think Andrew Toney is insanely underrated. With Dr. J. getting older, Toney became the 6ers primary bucket-getter, particularly in the 83' title season. But since he played with Moses, Dr. J, cheeks, Barkley, etc, and only played 5 good years in the league, everyone forgets about him.

Great video, Jonny! I had not heard of Mikkelsen before, so it was great to learn about him. I had learned a little about Dennis Johnson and Michael Cooper too, but not too much, so it was great learning more about them. :) I agree that Harper is underrated. I also remember how he and Fisher (as you mentioned) also played key roles for the Lakers. When you mentioned Bowen, I also remembered something interesting about him that you mentioned in a previous video. To this day, I still wonder how he was such a good 3 point shooter, but also a bad free throw shooter. Awesome video, Jonny! Have a great and blessed Sunday 😊

Nice that you mentioned Mikkelsen for the 40s/50s Lakers. But from what I've read he was more of a number three for the team and Jim Pollard was the number two in the hierarchy at the time. Although from a numbers perspective it makes sense to go with Mikkelsen on this one.

Havlicek is also a valid choice for the 60s Celtics, and considering he kept it going in the 70s without a half-dozen of the 60s HOFers… His productivity in the playoffs in the 60s was on par w Sam Jones, though of course Jones was clearly the one they called on in the clutch to get the key bucket. Jones deserves the love, but still Havlicek deserves more credit than he gets for the six(!) 60s championships he got before spearheading two more in the 70s…

I think with all the crazy stories about Manute Bol never playing an NBA game sober, the unknown data about his age, his downfall in life after basketball - The list goes on. Or maybe John starks and his wild basketball journey. 83: Played 2 Varsity games in HS 84: Taxi squad at 1st college 85: Expelled, 5 days in jail for robbery 85: Expelled from 2nd college 86: 3rd college, bagged groceries at Safeway 87: 4th college 88: Undrafted 88: Signs with Warriors 90: CBA All-Star 90: Tries out for Knicks* 93: All-Defense 2nd Team 94: All-Star 95: 1st NBA player w/ 200 3PTS in a season 97: Sixth Man Award * Starks injured himself during a Knicks practice when Patrick Ewing slammed Starks to the ground for trying to dunk on him. Due to NBA rules, the Knicks weren't allowed to cut him while he was injured. He impressed the team during his rehab, they gave him a chance and the rest is history. *Just a tip - not a demand) I always look forward to, whatever you come up with in terms of content. :))

Another great piece of work by. When it comes to B-ball, it's you...& everyone else. Coop is a good choice for my Showtime Lakers for all the reasons you stated. However, I believe Norm Nixon is the most overlooked important Laker in that dynasty. I realize he was only there for the 1st two titles, but his numbers speak for themselves, including sharing top scoring honors with Kareem in the '82 NBA Finals, which was their 2nd title. To this day, Nixon being traded from the Lakers hurt me more than any other trade they ever made. 😢

Dennis Johnson was clutch, and in a wide variety of ways. He would hit the last second shot sometimes, sure, but more often it was the crucial steal, blocked shot, rebound, free throws, clutch pass, anything. He just seemed to come up with the crucial last second play over and over, and as a Pistons fan I got real damn tired of it lol. Larry Bird stole that inbound pass from Isiah, but few people talk about how smart it was for DJ to anticipate, cut to the hoop, and give Larry an option to pass.

For the early 2000’s lakers I have to go with Derek Fisher. He was such a sound PG who knew his role which was to get his teammates involved and knock down big shots.

I do think Ron Harper is the correct pick, but I like to give credit to Luc Longley whenever I get an opportunity. Sure, he was just a role player, but he was a really solid player and Jordan is on record saying that he was very important to their championships. I’d say he’s like what Boris Diaw was to the Spurs. Nothing special, but you’re gonna get very quality minutes, important defensive utility, and a humble player who will sacrifice for the sake of the team.

I think Luc Longley is Way more underrated then Harper. In the era of the big man he played an important role and in 97-98 season avg 11 ppg and helped to keep the bulls ticking while pippen was injured. Longley was a very good mid range shooter and excellent passer in the triangle offence. So let's not do a Last Dance and forgot fellow Aussie BIG MAN.

I actually think all the Warriors core guys are properly rated in some way. Iggy got a finals MVP, he’s very much appreciated by the team and media but I do understand you have to put someone down for every team.

Bowen was definitely a dirty player! I’ll even admit he was valuable and belongs on this list of underrated players from these dynasties (the whole list is spot on). I’m all for a physical game of basketball, would admit I gravitate towards it, but Bowen at times was too dirty and caused so many injuries.

I know you said they had to win 3 rings, but who would you say from the Heatles was the most underrated. Yes, they only won 2 but they were extremely dominate, lots of credit is appropriately given to LBJ, Wade, Bosh, but if you had to add one for them, or for the the late 80's Pistons who should have had 3 but got screwed by the refs, who would you pick? What about from Houston's repeats?
