"The books have been breeding" - I can really relate to this! ;) I absolutely love fairytales, and grew up with the Norwegian folk tales, and the Danish H. C. Andersen's tales, as well as Grimm. :) I remember I had a kids' fairytale book with Cinderella (Askepott), where the sisters actually chops parts of their feet off, and the blood gives them away. Yes, they were published for kids. This was in the 1970's, though... Who illustrated your Norwegian Folk Tales book? I absolutely adore Theodor Kittelsen's illustrations!
@jenvcampbell4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the cutting off of the toes/heels is in quite a few children's editions. Blood and gore for kids is fine, I was more referring to the sexual violence in fairy tales that's not for kids. xx
@jenvcampbell4 жыл бұрын
Re. Norwegian, I have two: the small one is doesn't have an illustrator listed, so I assume they are by the authors Abjornsen and Moe. The large one -including fairy tales from Finland, Sweden etc- by Chronicle has illustrations by Ulla Thynell.
@LunaciaBooks4 жыл бұрын
@@jenvcampbell Yes, understood what you mean re. sexual voilence. Just find it funny how chopping off body parts are OK. Asbjørnsen and Moe collected the tales, but as far as I know, never illustrated anything. I did look up your edition, though, and can see there are illustrations by Theodor Kittelsen, Eilif Peterssen, Erik Werenskiold, and Otto Sinding. I think Theodor Kittelsen is my favourite Asbjørnsen and Moe illustrator.

Thanks for the video. That really was thorough! I used to have such a passion for fairy tales when I was 16 and wrote my university application all about it. Recently read Marina Warner's Mermaids in the Basement. I wondered if you've ever had the chance to look at any of Ron King's art books? Or if you're familiar with his work? He doesn't always focus on fairy tales and usually makes books interrogating what a book really is. He made a retelling of Bluebeard with a lot of pop-up elements. I wrote an essay all about illustration vs text and his pop-up book blew my mind- a book-object to contemplate at length. If you have seen his work do you like it? If not, maybe its a worth a trip to an archive to take a look sometime in the future.

These look so fun! Also, I’ve been trying to find this book for years now but I can’t remember the title or the name of the author. But, I do remember some parts of the book: -The cover of the book was like a blue sky with fairies flying around in the middle -There was once scene where water pond/ lake fairies made you answer riddles to pass the lake -There was a scene were you walked into a shy weeping fairy in an icy cave -There was a scene in the dark, where the pond/ lake morphed into a face of person.... That’s really all I remember, also the book was more a chapter thick book, rather than a thin book If anyone knows the name of the book or the author pls tell me, thank you 🙏🏻🤍🤍

I'm surprised you don't have anything on Charles Perrault, a French author whom the brothers Grimm actually took a lot of inspiration/material from (to put it nicely). Also... no Mabinogion? 😉 Otherwise, what an impressive collection; that book about birds really sounds like it'd be my thing. 😊

Whats the difference between fairy tales and folklore?

Elements of folklore appear in fairy tales. Ie Baba Yaga is a character of Russian folklore, who appears in many different fairy tales.

I recommended a Chinese one in this video: Chinese Fairy Tales and Legends by Richard Wilhelm (editor), and Frederick Herman Martens (translator). As for Japanese fairy tales. The Japanese edition of Pantheon Fairy Tale & Folklore Library would be good, too.

Very interested in From the Beast to the Blonde. What exactly does that delve into? Also in regards to the representation of disfigurement, how do you feel about The Phantom of the Opera and adaptations?
@jenvcampbell4 жыл бұрын
You can find the blurb here www.marinawarner.com/book/from-the-beast-to-the-blonde-on-fairy-tales-and-their-tellers/ I'm not a fan of Phantom. If you look at my disfigurement playlist, you'll understand why. You can find that on my main KZbin page (I don't discuss Phantom specifically, but it's similar to other things I discuss.)
