One of my professors at uni (I studied Psychology) recommended us "The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales". I haven't read it yet, but given that my professor was one of the smartest people I have ever met and he absolutely loves reading I totally trust him! The author, Bruno Bettelheim, is a really famous child therapist. From what I have gathered, the book is about the impact that fairy tales have in the development of children's morals and it psychoanalizes several popular tales like Snow White or Hansel and Gretel.

Thank you for the lovely fairytale book recommendation Christy ✨I grew up with Hans Christian Anderson fairytales; they have a special place In my heart! And as Neil Gaiman quoted: Fairy tales are more than real not because they tell us that dragon exists but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten! Take care, love from Canada!!💛

I loved this video! Gave me so many ideas of magical books to read. So lovely to hear someone talking about the importance of fairy tales/stories too: they are not just for children! Love the idea of them being at once an escape from society but also a reflection of it. ALSO, not a book but this video made me think of a film I love called Song of the Sea, which is an animated Irish film about a selkie. It's quite Ghibli-esque, really wholesome and magical

The Changeling is absolutely stunning. It honestly reminded me of The Buried Giant as you were talking about it; it seems like they might be written in a similar literary style with similar themes, but I haven’t read The Buried Giant. I highly recommend reading the children’s story Outside Over There by Maurise Sendak before reading The Changeling or as you read it because LaValle references it a lot. The Changeling, in many ways, is about stories and fairy tales as much as it is one

Zoe Marriott is a great author for retelling fairy tales - she has 5 books that are stand alone (although it’s hinted that they’re set in the same universe) and inspired by classic fairy tales but are very much their own thing. I love your videos even if I knew all the books! The Happy Prince & other stories is one of my favorite books from my childhood collection, i also had Rip van winkle & other tales by Washington Irving, and I've read them both countless times. Once when I was searching for Angela Carter books I also found the work of Angela Slatter (Sourdough & other stories) which I ended up liking a lot. I read The Bear & the Nightingale alongside a copy of Russian Magic Tales which was such a beautiful experience. I even read some of it aloud to my parents! For Russian tales written by an actual Russian author I would also recommend The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol. The Changeling is on my TBR but I'm scared to read it o.o, even though I really loved the author's novella The Ballad of Black Tom. It's horror but no one says clearly what type (without spoiling). One of my recent fav writers that I'd recommend to everyone is T.Kingfisher (Nine Goblins, Bryony & Roses (beauty/beast retelling where they end up friends), The Seventh Bride (Bluebeard retelling), and her beautiful webcomic Digger (which has a feel of fable/folktale about it))♡

I recommend Deathless which is also by Catherynne M. Valente. It's a Russian inspired fairy tale for adults and weaves in many different Russian folkloric stories into one! I also recommend Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones, which reads like a fairy tale as a girl in the Bavarian woods enters the realm of the goblin king!

These are all great recs. I hadn't heard about The Buried Giant before, but I'll definitely be picking that up among some of the others. I would also recommend The Hobbit, Stardust and The Last Unicorn, all juvenile fantasy with lots of fairytale elements. I think Alice in Wonderland and The Adventures of Pinocchio would also qualify? If so I'd rec' them too :)

Hello Christy, I really enjoyed your video. (my apologies if my english is not the best, I'm not a native speaker!) If you (or anyone else) are intersted in horror/fairytale books I would suggest The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. It is one of my favourite books. The story is (quite litterally) a journey into adulthood for the main character, David. His adventure takes place in a world somehow connected to our own and pupulated by fairytale characters we know well, but with a much darker twist.

Great recommendations! Also, I’ve been trying to find this book for years now but I can’t remember the title or the name of the author. But, I do remember some parts of the book: -The cover of the book was like a blue sky with fairies flying around in the middle -There was once scene where water pond/ lake fairies made you answer riddles to pass the lake -There was a scene were you walked into a shy weeping fairy in an icy cave -There was a scene in the dark, where the pond/ lake morphed into a face of person.... That’s really all I remember, also the book was more a chapter thick book, rather than a thin book If anyone knows the name of the book or the author pls tell me, thank you 🙏🏻🤍🤍
