You mention a few times it's based on the comics and not the TV or movie versions. It's based on the new comics, though, which are more of a hybrid between the TV and comics franchises, which is why they have the colored bands and use pizza for life. The original comics started out with a ridiculous premise, but took the story and characters pretty seriously. The shows added in the goofy California surfer speak, color coded headbands, obsession with pizza, etc to make it more accessible to kids.

I was waiting to see what you thought of the game and have to agree with the both of you. The game is fun, has interested new gameplay mechanics, and is super thematic. I have always loved the turtles and this game makes me happy. P.S: The TMNT IDW comics are awesome.

Really glad I backed this at the works level. Bebop and rocksteady were stretch goals as well as even more missions and mousers. Bunch of stuff. Can't wait to get my group playing this. Thanks guys! Also IDW said they have years of expansions planned and Kevin Wilson was chasing a turtles IP and told them he had the perfect game designed for it. Seems he was right! And the comics are absolutely amazing. Can't wait for the Krang expansion!

Michael Noa I actually regret not backing this at The Works level. After playing Cryptozoic's Ghostbusters, I was apprehensive about dropping $150 on a game that looked like just another nostalgic cash grab to me. Fortunately, Unlike Ghostbusters, there's actually a fun, well thought out game attached to that TMNT license.

Our ‘dungeon master’ for this, who was also the owner of the game, said it was one of his worst gaming experiences ever and sold the game on. We were having fun as the turtles, though I noticed over two or three scenarios I had easily less than ten turns, over an entire game night. And the owner felt like he was doing nothing. Food for thought.

Surprised they didn't mention the odd scaling on some of the figures. Such as the basic thug being much taller than Shredder. From what I can tell all the stretch goal minis are a larger scale. It doesn't ruin the game but it is worth mentioning.

I know Tom, and especially Jason, hate Kickstarter exclusive stretch goals. So you will not be happy to hear that Bebop and Rocksteady are, sadly, Kickstarter exclusive stretch goals for backers only. (and I agree that this garbage needs to stop)

Well, actually all the models will be made available later but as different sculpts. Only the exclusive scenarios will never be sold at retail.

This version of Bebop and Rocksteady is also Kickstarter exclusive- not just the sculpts, but the way they work too. Which is a shame, because it's actually a pretty interesting mechanic.

Gamera 23 it does need to stop. I don't mind if they cost extra later but kickstarter preorder exclusives.... I recently picked up Exodus and was so happy all the cool Kickstarter stuff was available from the bgg store (the extra action and political cards etc.)

But companies want to give backers an incentive to pay money early/upfront/preorder. You get a little something extra for the risk. IDW is sorta meeting halfway in that the characters will be available later, but in different sculpts. Which I think is kind of cool.

I do hate exclusive stuff, but the exclusive gameplay content is really minimal. It's not like backing a CMoN game and missing out on 30+ characters. Two "for fun" campaigns (one fourth wall-breaking, the other based on the original Mirage comics), alternate Character sheets, and a few alternate sculpts. Bebop and Rocksteady, Mousers, April/Casey/Splinter are already confirmed for future expansions (with A/C/S being the first up).

Looking at this years later. I realize the share your dice mechanic has some interesting similarities with the more recently released Marvel United. It seems logical that fans home-brewed a TMNT United (which I missed the boat on sadly)

What's the difference between regular shadows of the past, shadows of the past Kickstarter and shadows of the past the works pizza box? I have the Kickstarter. I like to collect. Is there any difference between them and if so what are they?

Main problem with this game is the same problem as with other similar games....the game is unbalanced in favor of the foot clan. I have played it repeatedly with my friends and I have won almost every scenario as the foot clan. The fact is that the foot clan minions have so many more moves than the turtles and their allies and often times if the turtles dont do exactly what they need to do step by step they will lose for sure before even the first round is even done; i.e. opening scenario of the game. I love the turtles and have since I was little and I want to love this game, but it is imbalanced.

That's the point of the game. The turtles will lose if they don't work together. This game is thematically accurate to a "T". I love it and have never lost against the foot. In my defense though i do control all four turtles vs my friend. It's easier by myself rather than getting four seperate minds to be on the same page.
