I have a '90 Les Paul Studio Lite. Black with black hardware. Not the trans-black that's in the catalog pics but deep "I could swim in that" black. I have never seen another like it. I purchased it from one of my professors at music college who was a Gibson endorsee for $500 with the original hard case. Of the 7 Les Pauls I have purchased (Standards, Customs, re-issues), it's the only one I have bonded with and the only one I still have. It's an amazing instrument!

Nice! I have a '97 Studio Lite. Your Studio Lite is an early year model with translucent paint (should be a TBK (Transluscent Black) with black hardware. Mine is a later model '97 which they switched from translucent finishes/black hardware to traditional finishes with gold hardware (mine is VS). All Lites came with those hotrod 496/500T pickups. That 500T pickup is a double bladed ceramic (if memory serves) and its a screamer. What's interesting about the Lite is, the core is chromyte (African balsa which is actually a tonewood) inside mahogany. The 9 weight relieved holes under the maple top are also plugged with the African chromyte. This makes the guitar highly resonant with that "ring" acoustically. Pair it up with that 500T and its a screamer. You got a beauty there!

06:55 I own a 1991 Studio Lite that I bought used close to 20 years ago. The face is a dark chocolate brown color, but Gibson didn't list that color. The rest of the guitar is extremely dark brown, almost black. The finish is factory original, so I have no idea what the story is behind it. All of my research indicated that the guitar was factory-equipped with 496R and 500T pickups. I could not verify that, but I replaced them with Seymour Duncan pickups, anyway. It now sports an SH-2 Jazz model in the neck and SH-4 JB model in the bridge, and both of them are coil split. I absolutely love the feel of that neck, and the action is amazingly low, without fretting out. The frets are still original with a lot of wear left. This is one guitar I will keep forever!

90's LP Studio Lite are great guitars. Fast action w the thin 60's neck / ebony fret board. My 91 came with a 500T in the bridge which was a one trick pony so I replaced bridge and neck PU's w Alnico 2's. The neck replacement was great but the bridge PU was feckless. These are weight relieved guitars so you need some muscle in the bridge. I'm gonna swap out the alnico 2 bar magnet in the bridge with a roughcast 5. That should give it punch and drive but retain clarity

I have the same p90 bfg. The fretboard is down in the pocket lower because the guitar was not slack belt or finish sanded. TK, everyday since Gibson announced about the new 50’s Original Standard, I have gone back and forth on it or the PRS Singlecut/Doublecut 594. One day it’s one, the next day it’s the other. So please do a show on the PRS’s you own because there are a few UTubers opinions I respect and you are one of them and I want to pull the trigger soon. Thanks!!!!!
@BAMozzy695 жыл бұрын
As someone with a 594 and tried a 50's Standard LP, I would say it really depends on what you are looking for. The Gibson has the heritage and the look (especially if you like the scratch plate and the bass/treble disc). You also save a LOT of money if buying new but they can have 'minor' fit and finish issues - not that they affect tone and playability. Pick-ups are also a bit hotter too. The 594 though is the better 'instrument'. It doesn't have 'fit/finish' issues, the bridge and locking tuners are better too, the headstock is better designed so much less liable to break or have tuning stability issues. The Pick-ups are more vintage sounding with more clarity and note definition (depends on what you yourself prefer as to whether you prefer this or the Gibson). The 594 also allows you to split the PU's giving you more tonal options. At the end of the day, the choice really comes down to you. The difference in price is now bigger and Gibson has the 'name', the heritage. PRS though has the consistency and quality - its PRS taking a 'classic' and looking at 'everything' and then improving on it - but that quality comes at a price. I can't tell you what you should do - its something you should try yourself and decide. I love Gibson LP's myself but I couldn't let my heart over-rule my head when I knew that the PRS is the better, more consistent and more stable instrument. Its up to you as to whether you listen to your heart or your head, whether the extra cost of a PRS is worth it to you or not.

I would keep the humbuckers in the blue LP since you have two others with P90’s. Just my thoughts. I have two 2012 LPs. Long story, but went to buy one in more of a honey burst, but they had a Pelham blue one. I had to get them both.

haha, sounds like something I would have done as well.

Thanks for sharing your fine collection of Gibson guitars. I have always favored the Pellum Blue finish. I like the sound of P90s and want to check out the BFGs to see if I can get a deal.

They should be a 2 490s or a 490R n 498T.They usually have stickers on the underside of the pick up.

The 2018 BFG isn't chambered, the earlier models are chambered. The 2018 really doesn't compare to earlier models. The reason your finger board is recessed into your body is that because it comes off the CNC and they don't sand it down to specs. The only sanding they do is to smooth it out. I have a Gary Moore BFG and it's a very versatile guitar with the P90/Humbucker combo. I own several Gibson Les Paul '09 Studio all Mahogany, '10 50's Tribute (Original release) '10 Gary Moore BFG, '12 Traditional all Mahogany, '12 Studio, '13 Traditional (non weight relief), and '17 Traditional Pro III. FYI Previously to 2014 Gibson used Julian date in their serial number so a 2011 Guitar would look like this 10071XXX. The 1st and 5th are the year and the others is the day, it would be January 7, 2011. The number following 5th are production numbers. Of course there are exception to these when it comes to reissues etc. Since JC took over they went back to using the Julian date.

"Sir.. I have seen Rootbeer, I have smelled Rootbeer, I have drank Rootbeer and that Sir is NO Rootbeer!" I dont know what it is..it turned me off immediately but as you discussed it, it really started growing on me fast.. I guess because its not flashy but still very unique.. Nice collection. Great stories.. And please.. Don't bother putting the Seymore P90s in to the classic..you bought the one you wanted so enjoy the P90s in that, if its not broke or sounding like a thin Chibson pickup..why bother? Looks great as it, its stock and really you don't need another P90 guitar.. Love both pelham blue finishes.. sig Player Plus is my favorite of your collection.. Love satin finish and you got it by MISTAKE!!😆..I was curious on your opinion of the Rich-lite board on the one that had it. I am looking for a model called a Gibson Studio "Shred" that has it, its blacked out and has a floyd rose in it, it comes blacked out or with chrome trim which is gorgeous on the model.. Rich-lite?? Or not to Rich-lite...that Sir is my Question...Thanks!
