The first one is the only one for me. Perfect as a stand alone, and frankly Michael (or the Shape, as I prefer to call "it") is scarier without any motivation, for me.
@ImpressionBlend3 ай бұрын
It's true, it works perfectly as a standalone. But the franchise is a good time regardless ))
@adrianphillips21363 ай бұрын
Totally. I look at the character as "The Shape" in the original, and Michael Myers, in the sequels. The original shape is haunting (and effective) because my imagination exaggerates the severity of the threat. Once Michael/Laurie got the Empire strikes back treatment in the sequel, the only "shape" that remained was the box the creatives (reluctantly) put Myers in. 😢
@jayhawks4life3543 ай бұрын
@@adrianphillips2136 I hope that "Totally" was on purpose, ha. Agree. In my head canon, Michael "disappeared" at 6 years old and his body was taken over by The Shape, whatever entity that is. It's unknown, and that's what made it so damn scary. That and the music, of course.
@samgott86893 ай бұрын
Agreed. It’s part of why the franchise as a whole just isn’t that great. Michael works best when he is just a faceless, motiveless force of nature. It’s kind of the whole point: what is evil? WHERE is evil found? Is it just some monster to be found in the creepy haunted castle or is it found in quiet suburbs? Is there really any making sense of random violence? Adding layers of motive and identity to Michael as a person just doesn’t add anything of interest and makes the subsequent stories increasingly ludicrous since all the other characters have to be defined by even the most subtle of characterization or humanizing given to him beyond, “the boogyman”
@adrianphillips21363 ай бұрын
@samgott8689 100%.. its a weird balancing act of "mystique and ambiguity" with "purpose and identity" that can respect the audience. The original didn't box itself (or its audience) in with specific plot/directional choices. Personally, I actually like the Halloween 2 brother/sister twist despite the ramifications it had. DGG's Halloween (and beyond) continues to be affected by PRECEDENT, Michael targeted Laurie in plenty of entries, so we'll do that again. The uncertainty of the original was (ironically) a certain way to ensure its success. It makes sense that studios would inevitably fuck it up in favour of templated, matter-of-fact situations. It's sad to admit defeat, knowing that's the trajectory of things but the OG will always be there

My Ranking: 1. Halloween (1978) 2. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers - This one I grew up with the most. 3. Halloween II (1981) - I rank it this high mainly for Bennett Tramer's (blonde Michael) death scene, LMAO! 4. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later 5. Halloween (2018) 6. Halloween Kills 7. Halloween Ends 8. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers - Difficult movie to rank mainly cause of the producer's cut shenanigans. 9. Halloween (2007) - When this remake first came out I didn't know who the target audiences this was for. My generation already loved the original. Any younger and they wouldn't be able to buy tickets for it. 10. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers 11. Halloween: Resurrection - Movie RUINED H20 for me when this first came out. I was like, WTF!? Not going to include Halloween II (2009) and Season of the Witch cause I haven't properly seen them for obvious reasons.

Thank you! If I had to pick the best "Halloween" timeline that feels complete and satisfying it would be just two movies: Halloween (1978) + Halloween (2018). Done and done.
So happy Halloween III is getting the recognition that it much deserves. The Halloween franchise had the potential to be something more than the same ole Michael Myers slasher movie. But sadly, that never happened. Love Halloween III so much.

I can get with this ranking. I always get fascinated with rankings from horror fans that did completely grow up on every single one of these movies. Some of the bad sequels rank higher for me mainly because of its nostalgia value. So when people don’t have that, I understand how they can pick them apart.

I like how the original and 3 are your top 2. I was born in 1980, and those are the two i grew up with as a kid. From the ages 6-11 Halloween 3 was my favourite movie, and i watched it about twice a week.
Your top three are spot on! I also find the original and Season of the Witch interchangeable for the top spot. The suspense builds with each Silver Shamrock commercial countdown! Best writing of the franchise in my humble opinion.

@TheAnadrome3 ай бұрын
Thanks Marianna. Great list. I was very glad to see H3 get the love it deserves. I saw it when it came out in the theatre. I walked out very satisfied. And in those days we didn't have a fandom surrounding this franchise. No internet. No 'haters'. So I, for one, just thought great addition to the series. (I wouldn't have used the word franchise then.) The main reason that they swerved away from Carpenter's anthology idea was because the box office was lower than the previous two. There wasn't another way to communicate collective vibes back then. As it became a franchise H3 was demonized for NOT having Michael. But I'm glad to see that the Season of the Witch has come into its own. I am glad to see that you recognized Rob Zombie's Halloween II as being better than many often decry. But I consider Rob Zombie's Halloween to be just as good as number II. I think it is misunderstood. It was for me a treatise on masks, which is a subject I care a lot about. What Zombie was doing in his quirky way is taking a stab (pun intended) at what some people might call 'elevated horror'. (I don't use that phrase personally.) It wasn't as successful as it could have been, but the attempt was there in his origin of Michael Myers to give us much more than had previously been the case. Of course, Michael Myers is the Boogieman and doesn't need a back story, any more than Art the Clown does. But around that time there were several horror films seeking a way out of the Extreme Gore (TP is another phrase I don't like using.) dead ends. Around the same time you get The Girl Next Door, The Woman (which I might be alone in liking) and especially Martyrs, which does indeed break out of the Extreme Gore trap. And eventually these more unusual experiments lead into the kinds of much more complex horror films of the Teens and Twenties. This was excellent Marianna. There will be people clamoring next for Freddie and Jason, etc. But I'd like to vote to see you do the Scream franchise, including the TV seasons. No rush though. Not horror, but I just saw Anora.... wow! Is there an Impression Blend of this one down the road? Check out my 'Horror Genres and Subgenres: How Do You Categorize Horror Films?' It's got some genre categories that I think be new to you. I think it's up your alley in a thought provoking way. Thanks as always.

Enjoyed your presentation! I myself have always been of the mindset that John Carpenter's Halloween be viewed and rated on a different plane than the array of sequels. It is a near perfect "horror" movie. It was intended as a complete story and never needed what came after, which in many ways sullied and soiled the impact and legacy the original created in the genre. However, should one get the urge for more - and we all do! - and because you asked, here’s one guy's ranking list, from worst to first: 13 - Halloween: Resurrection 12 - Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers 11 - Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers 10 - Halloween (2007) 9 - Halloween Ends 8 - Halloween H20: 20 Years Later 7 - Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers 6 - Halloween II (2009) 5 - Halloween Kills 4 - Halloween III: Season of the Witch 3 - Halloween II (1981) 2 - Halloween (2018) And waaaaayyyyy up top - in a completely different stratosphere from the rest of the pile: 1 - John Carpenter's Halloween Thanks again. Interesting rankings! For me, some of the good sequels (Halloween 2018 and Halloween 4) were then ruined by the sequels to those sequels. It's hard to watch a movie knowing it's setting you up for a poor conclusion. As a result I tend to either go Halloween (78), Halloween II (81), Halloween H20 and then stop or just Halloween (78) and Halloween (2018). I do enjoy Season of the Witch, it looks great and it has two great moments (you know what they are) but ultimately I find it a little too cheesy and silly. I didn't hate the Zombie movies but he was so the wrong director for this franchise. Why did no-one give him Texas Chain Saw Massacre to play with? So I'd probably go 1 Halloween 78, 2 Halloween 2018, 3 H20, 4 Halloween II (81), 5 Halloween 4 6 Season of the Witch, 7 Kills 8 Ends 9 Halloween 2017 10 Halloween II (2009) 11 Halloween 6 12 Halloween 5 13 Resurrection

Halloween 5 was so ambitious because it *tries* to be a story about a cursed princess who overcomes her curse and tries to free her uncle of his. Allow me to try and explain why I believe that In the original cut of the film before it was re-shot. Michael is awakened on a slab by a dark magician, or warlock, if you will. Dr. Death as he’s been dubbed by fans Why that scene works where the re-shot one in the theatrical version doesn’t, is because Michael’s mask has elongated, almost classically attractive features. It’s not a coincidence. It’s also not a coincidence that he looks somewhat attractive and has classically handsome features without the mask. As if…he’s a prince…a cursed prince being awoken once more. That fits with the ideas, a hermit holding Michael hostage just doesn’t. Like, pay attention to the Halloween costumes the characters are wearing: The Devil, Werwolf, Little Red Riding Hood, Jamie is a princess, Billy is a pirate, etc. Classical fairytale staples. These are deliberate *choices*. The film was shot in 1989. The costumes could’ve been Reagan, a Ghostbuster, a Star Wars character; but they weren’t. If it was a weird one off then you could argue it’s merely a coincidence, but where there’s smoke…there’s fire. And all of these motifs are little campfires. When Loomis confronts Michael in the woods with the fog rolling and Michael partially concealed by trees, tell me that shot isn’t framed and set up like something out of a fantasy movie. There’s a pov shot of Michael watching Jamie from across the street. The shot is of Jamie in the “castle” turret combing her hair(rapunzel), the castle is guarded by police(knights) until they’re called away. Jamie and her cop/knight attempt to rappel down the castle turret on a rope(rapunzel again), the castle has a booby trap(courtesy of Dr. Loomis), Jamie lays in a coffin like sleeping beauty while Michael stands over her, Jaime the princess tries to reach her uncle and manages to draw out a rare moment of vulnerability and regret before the evil reclaims him; and then the film ends with Michael in a dungeon. And finally notice how there’s fire on some of the bars of the dungeon…as if they’re torches. Now…does it succeed in this vision? Ehhh. But it tried something unique for the franchise. Now let’s be clear do I think Girard set out to make an exploitation film that is also at its core a fairytale? Who’s to say? I think it’s possible that he saw that the building they were using as the Myers house looked sort of like a castle and perhaps he thought something along the lines of “Hmmm maybe I could make do with what I have and take advantage of this and put a unique spin on the movie, while I’m at it.” I’ve heard the Dr. Death scene was re-shot because the producers thought that Girard was making some bizzare choices and they wanted it to feel like a proper follow up to Halloween 4.

When it comes to the Halloween franchise, it was something I think I really liked until I actually watched them again after seeing more movies in general. Especially slashers. My ranking, leaving out RZ Halloween 2, because why would I suffer through another one after the atrocity that is the first one. Honestly, I can not choose which is worse between Ends and RZ first one. Both just vomits all over the heritage. But in different ways. If I were to rewatch movies from this franchise it would be those ranked 4 or higher. Those ranked 5-7 are fine but why would I when there are better ones to watch. 1. Halloween (1978) 2. Halloween 3 3. Halloween H20 4. Halloween (2018) 5. Halloween 4 6. Halloween 2 7. Halloween 5 8. Halloween 6 9. Halloween Kills 10. Halloween Resurrection 11. Halloween (RZ) 12. Halloween Ends

I think I'm the opposite with that. The more movies (and especially horror movies) I watch the more I appreciate the simplicity of "Halloween". I love a good, layered, complex horror film, or something effectively twisted, those are some of my favorites, but "Halloween" is somehow relaxing after all that.
@Armandthevampire3 ай бұрын
@@ImpressionBlend That is interesting. I absolutely agree that enjoy both layered and straightforward simplistic horror. But for me, if I want to watch a simplistic horror, slasher, or otherwise, I would not turn to the Halloween franchise.

I used to HATE Halloween 6 but it’s grown on me so much! And 5 is a guilty pleasure for me because it scared the shit out of me as a kid. My ranking: Halloween Halloween 2 Halloween 4 Season of the Witch Curse of Michael Myers 2018 H2O Halloween 5 (controversial I know!) Rob Zombie’s H2 Halloween Kills Halloween Ends Rob Zombie’s Halloween Resurrection 🤢

Btw that is Halloween 6 Theatrical version, it's the one i'm used to, and in my opinion much better than the other version which i saw once a couple of years ago.

Just to put it in context, even though Halloween 5 appears quite low in my ranking, in my favourite 500 movie list it currently ranks at 200. I think Danielle Harris gave a brilliant performance as the final girl, and i don't often praise child actors, they usually annoy me.

The most fascinating aspect of this entire franchise is how bad the mask looks in some of them considering it's a William Shatner mask that they cut the eye holes bigger, brushed out the hair, and painted white. Also will never get over how mindblowingly bad Halloween Ends is.

Omg Halloween 2 1981 so low and H2O so high!!!! As Dave McRae would say H2O is like watching Michael Myers walked on the set of Dawsons creek!!

Wow, so wild how opinions can vary. I rank the original the top spot followed by Halloween 2. Next I really liked Rob Zombie's first reboot. His sequel was messy but if you cut out the mother woo it is redeemable. The first of the most recent reboots was pretty decent, but the rest , for me, are trash. I refuse to even watch Halloween Ends. Happy Halloween 🎃🔪

This is what I love about watching and reading other people's rankings of this franchise: everyone's is so different, and yet most people are just happy to appreciate the franchise and accept differing opinions. I wish more people were able to do that with other movies and franchises. Happy Halloween to you too!!

Zombies H2 is the best halloween sequel hands down. Its the only sequel that does not feel stagnant and tired. I dont want to watch the same movie over and over again. The film looks great in 16mm, and the production value with cinematography easily tops the series.

Well it doesn't feel like Halloween here in Augusta GA, 83 degrees today. While I don't mind your list, Rob Zombie's Halooween 2 should be lower and The original Halloween 2 seems more like a cash grab since the first one did so well and they just rushed it out. It's more like an elongated scene that should have been added to the original Halloween.

I’ll make it simple. The bottom 2 will be at 13: RZs H2 and at 12: RZs H1. 11 through 4 can be interchangeable. My top 3: at 3: HALLOWEEN: SEASON OF THE WITCH; at 2: 1981s HALLOWEEN II; at 1: John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN 🎃. Only 364 days till Halloween 2025 and it’ll be on a Friday-woo-hoo!
