The drummer and I (on bass) would set up on stage first and be right next to each other. He had no problem with me hanging out next to the hi-hat. I found that to see his kick drum pedal and mallet really helped me lock into the beat. SEEING him play the tune added another level of 'locking in'. We were always on the same page. Sometimes I would thump the strings to sound like the kick. We would sync some beats in a tune where I thump the strings and add depth to his kick sound. He loved it!

The last one is real. My first show was just a bunch of friends from school that put on a show in one of their garages. Called it "Freakin' Sweet Fest" had artwork on it and everything. One of the bands had a bass player that was so bad that they turned his bass down so no one could hear it. Funny enough they were in the top 3, along with my band, at the time. It was a blast. That was more than a decade ago, now.

The first group I ever played in did something similar. We'd turn the bassist right down and the keyboard player would just play the lines with his left hand.
