This is Buttsbury Wash, near Ingatestone, Essex. It's a minor road and it's easy enough to go a different way when the river's high, which is why no-one's built a bridge. When the river's low the water all goes through pipes under the road. I used to drive through it weekly when the water wasn't high, but driving through the water kept making my brake calipers seize up a few days later. Most locals knew not to go that way when it had rained a lot. Once, after heavy rain, I saw a car driving along the road leading to the ford at a normal speed, 30-40ish, I guess, and thought "He's going to have to turn round and come back." I waited for him to slow and stop when he saw the water level, but he just cruised on, and suddenly there was a big plume of water as he charged into the ford. He didn't make it, and got water in the car. He said "Well, it wasn't like this last time we came along here!"

Funny that when I used to work in a Sainsburys bakery every manager would tell us some version of a story about how a Baker lost their job after giving a customer food poisoning because they came into work after catching a stomach virus from a country they went on Holiday to..... the thing is in the 3 years I worked at the Bakery we had 7 different managers 2 of which had no previous background working in a department handling food (bakery, counters or cafe) yet they all told the same story except the employee in question had a different department, gender and holiday destination in each retelling making it pretty obvious that it's just something they've been told in manager training to regurgitate to their staff as a deterrent for certain behaviours that 11k repair bill almost sounds like one of those stories if it wasn't for this video showing someone doing exactly that.

Even though I wouldn't risk it myself as I know how cars work, but there's several things you can do here. Pop the bonnet and look where your air intake is. Dont let the water go near that. If you have one of these cars with a silly low intake at the front then you can pop the top of the air box off if it's in a high position (most are). This will help prevent water sucking in through the air intake then just drive as slow as possible. Also you could drive slowly in reverse. Keep the revs up by slipping the clutch, this will prevent water entering the exhaust. The water at the front will be pushed away from the grill. After you have driven through dont just floor it. Pull over let the water run off with the engine running and make sure it sounds normal. Any funny noises or running issues call a recovery. DO NOT CONTINUE TO DRIVE! If the engine stalls while driving through the water DO NOT TRY AND RESTART THE ENGINE. At this point the water drawn into the cylinders has stalled and hydro locked the engine . If you're lucky you may not have done damage yet, but attempting to start it will. Removing the spark plugs(petrol only) and turning the engine over will expel the water. For anyone wondering what the issue is then search for 'Hydrolocking an engine'

If you're a typical BMW driver you don't read the handbook, charge in developing a huge bow wave that completely fills the air intake and SPLAT!
