If you go forwards at the right speed you create a bow-wave that displaces water at the right distance from the various inlets to prevent hydrolocking. Going backwards does not do the same thing. OP was lucky, because the water was low enough for that vehicle anyway.

I'd do this, intakes around knee height, steam from radiator, downpipes and exhaust, not a problem. The reason he's going gently is the quite high chance of mud collecting in the dip. If the wheels slip going that slow it'll go sideways and down. You can't accelerate until you've got grip, or the bite will make the bike lurch. I'd have not put my feet down as that makes it harder to balance, and give that car a wide berth cos idiots jumping out increase chance of fail. For the comments about electrics, the wiring loom runs the seat to the lamps, roughly the same as the intakes. Also doesn't need to be adventure bike, same deal for any jap sports bike.
