Solid info, @ChrisEnockson. Thanks! At 6:17, the reason you've cut your hands before is because you are sliding the tire lever when the bead still has tension. Aside from the TL-10 style, tire levers work by levering the tire free in several succeeding points (the reason they come in sets of 2+), then after the tire is loose, sliding a lever along the bead to finish removing the tire from the rim.

Great video...thx for the tips...I just use 1 tl-1 and a flat screwdriver...works for me with no issues...I use this combination because I lost the other 2 tl-1s and just made due with what I have...thx again for posting the comparisons were great...I'll be buying the 5 next go around

Thanks for the comparison. Love the mini demonstration of each. New Continental road tires are a bear to remove and put on (700-23/25). I have used the TL-1 for years and it's in all my bike bags. I definitely will consider purchasing the TL-6.2 for those new rubber installs at my home shop. I think a combo of both these tools is needed. TRADE SECRETE NOTE: does anyone twist the tires to break the rubber down a bit for compliance in helping the install. You'll hear a little cracking all along the tire as you do it. I think it definitely helps in the break-in as well.

The TL-4.2 has a little ledge on the back of the hook - visible at 5:13 - that prevents the hook from sliding in as you use it. That's not on the TL-4. I tried some Pedro's levers today, but without that little ledge, and with a thicker tip, they did not work nearly as well. Thumbs up for the 4.2.

What do you think of that new tire monkey tire lever. Looks like a somewhat unique design but looks like it will break easily with no steel core.

6.2 really is the best lever if you have the bigger and more stubborn tires. The all plastic levers just bend and deform.

Awesome review! I've used the 1.2 for many years but looking at the 4.2, I wonder if the wider hook does a better job for those tires that fit really tightly onto rims. For example, I have some Vision wheel sets that use Vittoria Rubino 25mm tires -- very tight fit and always a struggle to get on the occasional flat on a ride. Would the wider hook on the 4.2 do a better job to mount those stubborn tires?

Possibly. They are typically pretty cheap ($5 or so) pick up a pair and give them a try. Let me know how it goes.

Do the TL-5 and TL-6.2 present any risk of puncturing inner tubes due to the small-radiused edge of the steel tip?
@ChrisEnockson
@ChrisEnockson 2 жыл бұрын
That is a good question. Any tire lever you use has a risk of puncturing a tube on install. Those two models might pose a slightly higher risk of it but if used with caution it should not be a problem.

This guy should try these levers on Shwalbe Marathons. He would need to stop the video halfway through due to bouts of insanity.

I just put on a pair of 37-622 Marathon pluses on 17-622 rims using TL-4.2. No problems getting them on. Getting the bead to seat nicely took some massaging tough.

Not sure that it makes much difference what the tire size is, it's more just personal preference.
