McCartney 2! I was 17 and ran out to buy it. Had the cover out forever. Art on the wall. I can remember hearing Temp Sec for the first time. I still don't get it. I played Egg so much I made scratches in the vinyl. The rocker So Glad to See You...wow. Love it. Rockestra.....LOVE. Paul sounds like he is having fun. London.....its a rainy day album. The cover tells the story. With a Little Luck....oh so pop. I always thought it needed John's contribution. Like when It's Getting Better on Pepper had John's "It can't get no worse." Speed of Sound is the Wings Over America touring album. AM radio in the US played it constantly and for 1976 it fit the airwaves perfectly. Its an album really of its time. I can't put it that high....but you lost me on Egg! To me, it would be much higher. Venus was another big one for that tour. Rock Show, was made to be played live. Some of his nonsensical lyrics were put down when it came out, but they are quite fun in retrospect. "I love you and, you, you seem to like me." So Paul....playful and witty.

There was about 30 of us waiting in reception when they had finished,got to speak to all three for a few minutes, Linda asking how far I had come and how long I'd been waiting,lovely lady.

I used to dislike Back To The Egg, except for maybe 3 select personal favorites. And just recently, it all of a sudden clicked for me and now I really enjoy putting it on. I remember hearing a story from (I think it was) Laurence Juber, saying that he recalled Paul Simon visiting McCartney in the control room and was absolutely transfixed as he listened to the unusual syncopation and unique harmonic changes on "Arrow Through Me" ...very unconventional as pop and yet very intuitive-feeling to the listener... a la McCartney's magic abilities (which Simon also possesses similar talent for). I love the mental image of Simon hearing it for the first time with McCartney, in a moment of awe and inspiration at its creativity. Thanks for the video Andrew!

I like the kind of humble nature of Waterfalls:) no big production, a somehow 'simple' song...love it and love the McCartney II album, although I could never put it in my top 10, I think. But it's great for what it is. I absolutely love Back To The Egg. Very fond memories of discovering the album, my first album by Paul/ Wings...

The other side, Over Easy, is... well, let's just say I'm struggling to connect with it. But totally agree with you on McCartney II. Wish Check My Machine was on the standard release as it's such a good companion for Temporary Secretary. Bang up job as usual, Andrew!

Yes, it's always disappointing when something iconic printed on an album cover disappears. I was similarly disappointed when the words "Enosification by Brian Eno" disappeared from the cover of my favorite Genesis album 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' in recent years. These albums are historic documents and should be left intact.

I loved this video Andrew ! It’s great and I have a lot to say as I grew up with all of these albums . Wings was my favorite band at this time! McCartney 2 was interesting. “Coming Up” a great track and always thought “On the Way” such a great song . I haven’t heard the reissue but it’s very expensive on eBay! I know you have said it’s a must have!Back to the Egg very underrated album . As you know, I wrote a review of this album and the summer of 1979 for Beatlefan publication a few years ago 😀. I like everyone hopes it’s the next box set with London Town. LT is ok not great not bad . I was disappointed when it was released after WOA. I expected a much bigger hard rocking album . I am very interested in what a combined album box set would look like 🤔? At the Speed of Sound is my favorite Wings album. I know BOTR is the best but Speed was at the apex of their popularity! I was 14 then and the album never left my turntable that spring/summer 1976. I called into every NY radio station trying to win tickets 🎫 back then . These were the days of rotary phones. I kept getting a guys house in NYC and he said kid you call one More time I will come to your house and kick your ass lol! Such great memories

Fantastic video. Your summation at 0:00:40 of McCartney II as an album you like in theory is spot on. I feel exactly the same. The archive has both ruined the original album and at the same time redeemed it. And Waterfalls is just a bit too slow - speed it up by about 10-20% (which is possible if you listen to the Take It Away podcast episode at 1.2x speed) and the song is greatly improved. The single version is also a verse shorter too. Also, I had no idea that they had dropped "Terpsichory" from the lyrics on the back of the Venus & Mars, and now that I know that I am equally annoyed. I learnt that from the album and it's been very useful in Cryptic Crosswords. I would also cite Famous Groupies for teaching me the words "Pulchritude" and also what a Proscenium Arch is. Mind you took me a few years to learn what a groupie really was...

I suppose it's in the nature of recording everything yourself that you - especially in the pre-digital age - end up recording tracks that go on a bit too long - especially if it's an instrumental or a largely ad libbed song. I believe it was the late Eddie Klein who did an amazing job in editing down several of the McCartney II tracks (and again this was back in the days of razorblade editing). I bought the Waterfalls single as a kid more because it was Paul McCartney and it was going cheap than because I loved the song. I've loved the B-side ever since then, but I've only recently started to appreciate Waterfalls and the depth of emotion that he's revealing, but playing down. And I think the barebones arrangement helps to convey that sense of playing it down and also, perhaps, the loneliness that he fears. But even the edit feels a little too long. And I wish he'd spent a little longer on the lyrics. But regardless, I am starting to like it a lot more now. Conversely, I agree with you about With A Little Luck - it has to be the full-length album version every time. Although there's nothing remotely reggae about that interlude in the song, I always call it the "excursion on the version" as it's more of a remix of the rest of the song than an instrumental break. But anyway, yeah, Waterfalls too long; With A Litte Luck too short if anything, and who knows why.

I like "Waterfalls" as it is. Not saying it is among Paul's very best, but the sparse arrangement works really well. Back To The Egg is Paul going new wave on several tracks, and it works well intermittently, but it is good Paul was willing to try new things. The more traditional songs like "Getting Closer" and "Baby's Request" are two of the highlights - "Arrow Through Me", too.

And I would move London Town up a bit higher if we go with the expanded track listing that includes Mull of Kintyre. Back to Egg ranks much higer for me. I attempted to rank Paul's album a few weeks ago, but it was too hard so I just divided them into thirds and grouped them that way. He has so many really good ones! I would have Egg in the top third. I never did care much for Egypt Station -- it is in my bottom third along with New and Mac 11. I will soon give Egypt Station another listen. There have only been 3 songs on that album that I really liked - Back to Brazil, Dominoes and In Spite of All the Danger. The others were okay but nothing special to me. Maybe I will change my mind after another listen or two. I do love the cover art work! I haven't listened to Driving Rain for ages either - that one is way at the bottom, but will give it another chance. Nothing odd about loving San Ferry Anne. I have always loved that song too! I've been enjoying these videos Andrew and was disappointed that this one didn't take us right through to the end/beginning. Although I understand that we're not all going to agree on which albums are better or worse I have to strongly disagree with your love for Speed Of Sound. I bought this album on the day of release and was very disappointed, for me it has become Paul's cabaret album and goes against everything that I thought The Beatles were opposed to. The songs on this album, in my opinion, are for the people who preferred Please Release Me over Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever. I can't imagine John or George wanting to get behind any of these songs, perhaps this is the ultimate McCartney solo album? I realise though that Paul appeals to many different tastes. Looking forward to the final episode where I'm sure your final no.1 album will be revealed and I think I know which one that will be. My favourite will probably be your no.2.

I agree with you about Back to the Egg, it has some phenomenal songs but imo they're just in arguably the worst order possible. The flow is a little incoherent, it's a bit front loaded with the second half feeling like an afterthought/unfinished, the concept isn't super straightforward... That said I think there IS a great album there, and a different ordering could do a world of good. I worked one out a while ago that's honestly just a few minor tweaks, but I think it's a great improvement: side 1: 1. Reception 2. Getting Closer 3. Spin It On 4. Again and Again 5. Arrow Through Me 6. Rockestra Theme 7. After the Ball/Million Miles Side 2: 1. We're Open Tonight 2. Old Siam Sir 3. To You 4. Winter Rose/Love Awake 5. The Broadcast 6. So Glad To See You Here 7. Baby's Request I'd honestly probably remove Rockestra Theme/So Glad To See You Here and make them a single, and maybe add Cage near the end if I were taking more creative liberty. But I wanted to keep it somewhat true to the original. Regardless, using my custom tracklist it's a top 10 Macca album for me. But as it was released it falls down a few slots.

Similar feeling about McCartney II - There's an unused double album tracklist that was on some acetate bootleg or something that I recreated on streaming using the Archive Collections. It's a fantastically weird listen and I've always felt he should've gone all in on the weirdness of that era. As it was released it feels a little neutered or commercialized. Definitely more difficult to get through the full double album (it starts with like 10 minutes of instrumentals, and the first song with lyrics is "All You Horse Riders", which is just hilarious) but it's more rewarding as well imo. You probably won't be surprised to hear I prefer the two LP version of Red Rose Speedway either lol.

In terms of Waterfalls, I like the fact it's underproduced. Had it been over produced it could have ended up far too glutinous.

I do not agree with you on Venus & Mars, but since it is a personal affection for the record, I can't fault you. It's not a favorite of mine at all. As for London Town's "I'm Carrying", maybe Paul shouldn't have advertised it so much. At least maybe he shouldn't have been "carrying" in 1980 when he went to Japan.

i have a frustrating relationship with “Venus & Mars” (to a lesser extent “Band On The Run”) especially compared to the live album “Wings Over America” (why did you skip that?) Let me explain if they were to remix just one of Paul’s 70s Wings albums, V&M desperately needs it. I heard the live album “Wings Over America” first and was absolutely blown away then when i finally heard V&M it was like the bland diet version of “Wings Over America”. I prefer to hear “Venus & Mars/Rockshow/Jet as one medley than the original recordings. “Call Me Back Again” sounds better live, “Let Me Roll It”, Magneto & Titanium Man” and “Letting Go”…better on “Wings Over America” even “Live & Let Die” sound better. (With the small exception of “Band On The Run”, “Listen To What The Man Said”, and “Silly Love Songs”) I’ll even go so far as saying “Lady Madonna” sounds better.. 😮

Absolutely Venus and Mars could massively benefit from a remix. Maybe we'll get one next year in the half speed remaster campaign? I did a later episode of this series where I built in live and compilation albums 👍

ANDREW I BELIEVE YOU AND ALL THE MCCARTNEY FANS ARE BEING RIPPED OFF BY THE PATHETIC REMastered archives ! you only have to appreciate the sounds of the artist remasters to hear the shortchange ppl gives us ! let alone the prices ! IE : ELTON JOHN has amazing remasters for around £20 !
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic 2 ай бұрын
I don't disagree that the Archive boxes are very expensive, but I also think that they are additional options for those that want them, while any McCartney fan who just wants the remastered album and a disc of extras, will also be able to get those for about £20, and I think that so long as that remains the case then I think that's a good deal for fans.

Although at the end of the day it's all about opinions & personal taste but having Back To The Egg & London Town so low is a travesty Andrew especially with some of historically some of Macca's worst music way way higher!! Both are up there easily in his top 10 or even top 5 albums ever & for once I think you are wrong.....
@AndrewDixonMusic

But if the criteria for ranking is, as stated "how much I enjoy the album", I can only take from an album the amount of enjoyment it gives me, I can't force more from it. If I rank album let's say 12th in terms of enjoyment and you put it 3rd, we're both completely right. If I rank an album 1st for enjoyment it gives me, and you put it last, again we're both right.
