I've got to say that round about 'Tug Of War' I tuned out of McCartney's solo career as, being a 20 year old then, my musical tastes were beginning to roam free. The most poignant recent hit for me being 'With A Little Luck' which charted as my family and I emigrated to the States. Now and again, I'd hear a hit or two but it wouldn't stick with me. But after these sensational videos you've created, you have reignited my faith in Paul's music. So much so that last night I went out and bought 'McCartney III' and 'Egypt Station' (physical copies are so much better then streaming). I think Flaming Pie will be my next purchase. BTW, Paul just played live locally here in So. Cal this weekend. Didn't get tickets in time :(

What a relief to see someone else giving Wild Life the love it deserves! I usually see it ranked at the bottom on these sorts of lists and I just think it's too fun to deserve so a low ranking. Personally would rank Red Rose Speedway even higher, but I also would rank Band on the Run lower, so never mind me!

Andrew, you inspired me to get out Wings Over America and have an afternoon. of the three album set. Opening with Venus and Mars, Riockshow and then...right into Jet. Full horns section on that tour. He was and still is amazing. If I had a time machine, one of the stops would be back to Madison Sq Garden that concert in '76. And I would be taking everyone with me. Thanks for the videos and postings Andrew!

Great series Andrew! Love all the love for Red Rose. Paul did a US television special after that release and My Love was a big hit. I was lucky to be a child in the 70s and was able to have these albums as they came out. McCartney and Ram were my dads first. Buy the time Red Rose was released, I was ten and able to save allowance to buy them myself. I always thought Little Lamb Dragonfly was a conversation between John and Paul, especially that " ...but I cannot help you in...." play on words line. Sounds just like John. I remember hiding the the album artwork for Red Rose from my mom....it came with an attached booklet. It was a little racy! 😆 I agree with you on Maybe. A masterpiece. Another Day, My Love, 1985, Band on the Run (Which to me get mixed in with Live and Let Die because it's released around the same time.) al great Paul classics! But it's songs like Backseat and Bluebird that fans adore so much. The albums I reach for most often..... Ram, McCartney, Red Rose, Egg, Venus, Pie. 🙂

I’ll be happy to take the blame. My friend and I are planning to do a combined Beatles solo top ten for our podcast but I think if you do it as you’ve done it so far as it not only shows your individual ranking but also your joint ranking too. It’ll also be interesting to see where you place Beatles in with the solo albums.

Great idea! In the 1970s, music journalists were brutal in the way they compared Paul and John albums. Mostly terrible to Paul, even though he had so much more commercial success. (There is a Creem Magazine cover story by Lester Bangs that is infamous on how it tears into Paul about his lyrics. Awful.) I could tell in interviews how much this affected Paul. I always thought Silly Love Songs was his response and that it was a brilliant statement on it.

I have loved this series! I never really deep dived into Paul McCartney until recently. I’m in my mid 40s and my very first influences was Sgt Peppers from my moms record collection. Fell in love with the Beatles at a young age. As far as solo careers I gravitated towards John even though he died so young! Then it was George. I liked the hits of Paul but just never really gave him the time he deserved…then Flaming Pie was released and I listened to that album a lot and fell in love with it…even still did not keep up. I’ve since been going back and listening to his catalog and loving it! Thank you!

Great series Andrew, I really enjoyed the twist you put on the rankings and the analysis of the albums themselves. I appreciated your strong take on "Maybe I'm Amazed." It might very well be the ultimate McCartney song. I am going to have to give that some thought! I agree that it does represent Paul's songwriting, musicianship and his relationship with Linda. I agree with you about Ram, that album gets better every time I hear it. Wild Life also becomes more intriguing over time. I have had a similar experience with "Some People Never Know" that you did a few years ago. It was a song I always ignored and then one day that melody started going through my head and I couldn't stop thinking about it. It almost has a haunting quality about it. Thanks for the great video and the great thoughts about the genius of Paul McCartney!

Hi Andrew. Really enjoyed your rankings and I tend to agree with you fairly often. I wouldn't have put the McCartney and Wild Life albums as high as you did, but I do understand you have quite a liking for a few of the quirky song on that album more than I do. Then I would also have had Back to the Egg and New higher on my list. Ram, B.O.T. R., and Flaming Pie are really up there as the best albums of all time, to me, but personally (odd) favourites of mine are Flowers in the Dirt (and I LOVE the collaborations with Elvis Costello) and Memory Almost Full. These are not necesarily superiour albums if you look at them song for song, so I can't quite say what it is about them, but I think it has a lot to do with positive memories, and associations with the songs besides how good the songs are. Thank you for your videoes and your World Cups. Always nice to talk about Beatles, and with someone who isn't afraid to say what he likes or dislikes despite popular opinion. :-)

Thank you 🙂👍 I think Back To The Egg and Wild Life are 2 albums in particular that wherever I rank them, lots of people will either love seeing their own opinion echoed, or will have a wildly different opinion to mine, they don't often seem to be mid rankers for most people, they're either high or low, but wherever any of us put them , all of us are right in our own ranking! 🙂👍

Flaming Pie and Egpyt Station I particularly like out of his later albums. Only where I disagree to you and probably everyone else is Tug Of War is way down in 20th in mine! This series was a lot of fun, thanks again Andrew! You probably know this already but the vocal take of Get On The Right Thing is actually straight out of the Ram sessions. I think some of the overdubs came later but you can just hear in his voice the same umph that's at the end of Backseat Of My Car or Oh Woman Oh Why. I also really love that song, it's so underrated!! I still have not been able to get into Wild Life at all, to be honest with you. I'd maybe even rank it at the bottom lol. To each their own though!

A great run-down of the content of the early McCartney albums. My recollection is by mid/late 70s many early solo Beatles albums had disappeared down a black hole. Everything was punk/new wave/metal/heavyrock, prog and glam were supposedly dead - and the ex-Beatles, specially Paul, were just 'pop'. They weren't even in the racks at places like EMI-owned HMV! (I recall around 1980 ordering Dark Horse and Material World, plus some Badfinger, as American vinyl imports from small ads in the back of Melody Maker/NME). I first came across Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway in the very well-stocked, central record lending library in Coventry (such an influencial place for anybody on a limited budget). I knew the content of McCartney and Ram but I couldn't believe how most of the stupendous material of Wild Life or the songs on RRS (apart from My Love) wasn't more well known.

Yes, "Maybe I'm Amazed" is a masterpiece of a song. It is Beatlesque in a post-Beatles kind of way. Whereas some of his songs from this period would have been improved by the Beatles treatment this song stands out as being perfect as it is.

Band on the Run is great, the fatigue factor notwithstanding. Thank you for recognizing Get on the Right Thing as a superior song - should have been the album opener. RRS would have been an awesome double album. Wild Life is cool but a bit thin. Would have been much improved by the addition of A Love For You, Hey Diddle, Sunshine Sometime and a completed Rode All Night - could have been epic. Ram and McCartney are desert island albums for me. I think Memory Almost Full is the only cd he did that is competitive with Ram. McCartney is such a cool one-man show.

I will see if there are any standouts for me other than the song "Driving Rain" that I do like. As far as my opinion of your rankings - for the most part my rankings would generally fall fairly close with a few exceptions. Wild Life and Egypt Station would be in the bottom third. Red Rose would be higher and Back to the Egg would be much higher! Did you know the song ‘Tomorrow’ came out of him messing around with the chords to ‘Yesterday’ and it shares many of the ‘Yesterday’ chords. I think the opening chords to Tomorrow are G F#minor 7th and B7th, the same opening chords of Yesterday. Check it out

Hi Andrew. It's weird when someone voices exactly your own opinion on songs. I agree completely with your views on Dear Friend, Dear Boy, Ram On, Monkberry Moon Delight and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five. These are pretty much my favourite tracks from their attendant albums. 1985 should have ended on that power chord. If McCartney really wanted to reprise the title track he should have faded it in after the chord had died away completely. Ram On is a revelation if you listen on headphones. For such a 'simple' track there is a multitude of stuff going on in the background. I have a bootleg that contains the full track before it was split in two with no fade in or out like some versions on KZbin. You can really hear the care that was taken in creating the soundscape. Obviously I would have a different ranking but it's not my channel so I respect your choices. If you are thinking of other McCartney ranking videos, may I suggest non album tracks, singles or b-sides?

@@AndrewDixonMusic Hi Andrew. A 'true' full version is not on KZbin. There is one that has been reconstructed so has a slight dip in volume on the join but it gives you an idea. Link below. I have a 4 CD boot called 'Paul & Linda McCartney's funky period 69-71' which includes outtakes, demos, the full original Ram On take (3:25) and some weird mashups between the Ram tracks and their Thrillington counterparts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/faSbeJ-VqK-nbNU

Get On The Right Thing appears to have been recorded before everything on Ram (my favourite moment: "My plug came out"). Little Lamb/Dragonfly seems to already have had strings recorded by mid-1971. And he obviously already had Big Barn Bed knocking about his head before Ram was finished. And yet none of these were on Wild Life...

Yes, strange how all that bypassed Wild Life completely, maybe new band he wanted to work on all fresh new material?

Enjoyable series. Naturally I can't agree with everything. The biggest head scratcher is how you could possibly rank Wild Life (2 riffs, a cover, an embarrassing Linda vocal and 4 proper songs) 3 spots ahead of Chaos and Creation (a songwriting peak for Paul). Other than that, I seem to enjoy later day McCartney (Chaos, Memory, New, Egypt Station) more than you do.

Hi, I'm new to your channel. Watched all the 5 episodes with real pleasure, enjoying your attitude (the enjoyment criterion - the only one that matters to me), style and accent. We tend to like the same songs on particular albums (the only major difference would be Waterfalls, which I love as it is), but generally I guess I rate Paul's ouevre lower a notch than you. I guess he is my favourite Beatle, and I like his best (I mean favourite) solo songs more than John's. But unfortunately there is not a single Wings/McCartney album that I would regard great as a whole - for any Pound Is Sinking we always seem to get a What's That You're Doing. This uneven quality bugs me more than in the case of John, who - somewhat surprisingly for me - embraced the album format much better. Perhaps my expectations are set too high for Paul, who seemed more of a conceptualist than John in the Beatles days. Yes, what Paul's albums have lacked most to my ears is the producer. It's a cliche perhaps, but I can't help it, I miss the producer's touch. Also I don't really like the Wings *sound* , but that's another story. My favourite albums are those where Paul shared the producer's credit with others, and I have to add that I first compiled my list and only then noticed the pattern: 1. Chaos & Creation 2. Flaming Pie 3. Tug of War 4. Ram (Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey being my favourite single post-Beatles McCartney song, on par with the best Beatles tracks) 5. McCartney Still, your take on these was fascinating and I really appreciated the love you gave to the latter-day albums as well as the clarity of your thoughts and the fact that you were so careful to avoid strong language towards the tracks you disliked - such a rare quality online these days. Gerard

Well, our top four albums are the same (maybe not in the same exact order, but those four are the best). As much as I love Paul McCartney (favorite living songwriter/performer), I would *almost* say that those are the only four solo (one with Wings) Paul McCartney albums you need. But he's got so many great songs scattered throughout the rest of his catalogue. If I were advising someone on purchases, after the top four, I'd steer them towards 'Wingspan', or possibly 'Pure McCartney', but there's still going to be some classics that escape you if you do that. Just some great tracks on 'Venus and Mars', 'Flowers in the Dirt', 'Chaos and Creation...', 'Egypt Station', AND elsewhere. 'Dear Friend', for instance (I agree with you on 'Wild Life', not so much on 'Red Rose Speedway'). Cheers on the video series. Thanks.

Band On The Run (with a twist) hi Andrew very much enjoyed the series of videos. I grew up listening to Band On The Run on (official) cassette which featured a different running order to the LP, as follows...Band On The Run, Mamunia, No Words, Jet, Bluebird, Mrs Vanderbilt, Picasso's Last Words, Let Me Roll It, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five. Makes for an alternative listening experience, and it's the one I'm most used to, try it maybe...when I listen to the album on CD, I still like to program the tracks in this order. Were any of the other albums resequenced for the cassette format?
@AndrewDixonMusic

@@AndrewDixonMusic Very true! I remember, as kid, listening to A Hard Day's Night on 8 Track which, again compared to the LP has a completely different running order, the title track not appearing till "programme 3", approx half way through! I understand that, in most cases, the cassette tape track sequences were resequenced to make both sides of the tape run to equal lengths, maybe not the way the artist intended the album to be heard, but I find it can make for some fun alternative listening, in the pre shuffle era! I still also have Venus And Mars and At The Speed Of Sound on cassette, both of which stay true to the LP versions.
