An UPS is a VERY expensive piece of equipment in many areas due to the cost of manufacturing those big batteries. If you don't have the money, a sacrificial 15$ surge protector will do just fine in physically protecting your PC to even the worst surges. Funfact: most damaging surges come in through the internet connection if you have copper. A UPS won't protect you at all against these, and they're the most destructive. While a mains surge may damage your power supply, a network surge has direct access to your motherboard, and can literally blow craters in it. There are lightning suppressors for network equipment that use gas discharge tubes to ground. Expensive, but well worth the investment. I'd recommend Ditek, but there are other brands. Just make sure they use gas discharge tubes and not cheap MOVs or TVS diodes that don't offer as much protection. Over the past two years at my job, I've replaced a half dozen routers, several PoE switches, several NVRs, a dozen cameras, 5-6 cable modems, 2 DSL modems and installed a PCIe NIC in a server that had its network chip quite literally blown up on the motherboard. All of those devices have the same thing in common, the surge came in through either the internet connection, or a nearby strike energized a CATx cable to hundreds or thousands of volts and blew stuff up.

Replacements could be several hundreds or even thousands of dollars if your rig was high-end. A d*mn good ups is sub $200. So if the power is somehow wonky and mercs whatever is plugged into it, then you lose an easily replaceable ups, not your gaming rig worth multiple times more. There's a catch though; if you buy low quality or your UPS goes bad, you risk frying both your pc and monitor..had real horror stories with PCs breaking down, people buying new ones and those going bad too in a few days or weeks... My advice is; simple surge protectors with a fuse OK, UPS or large capacitor protectors NO.

Something tells me the reason you love these so much is because of load shedding from your time in South Africa and I respect that. My GF lives by these, right now load shedding is on a pause (likely to win favor in their elections) but yeah it's saved her PC on several occasions. FYI I'm American just know this stuff from her

From years of servicing gas stations that have a lot of their equipment run off these. I've been collecting all the broken ones, fixing them up and using them everywhere. My house is active for 2 hours after the power goes out. Which is more than enough time to go downstairs and switch to battery backups.

If you have a 4090, you can actually hook up five of these together to get up to 6 minutes of power on time after your power goes out Edit: Guys, this is not a real suggestion... I was just making a joke about how much power a 4090 draws.

Instead of buying five of them together you can get an inverter with something like 150 Ah battery. It's going to cost you way less (costs $200-$250 here) and will provide you with a longer backup.

I like that you mentioned that you should shut down safely when you realize there is an issue. Some folks treat these things like backup generators, they dont even make a perfect sine wave. I did walmart networks for a while and some stores arent allowed to have generators. When power goes out an alarm sounds notifying personnel to start their emergency closing duties. The registers stay up for 30minutes along with the network so folks can checkout while employees dump ice on all the coolers before sweeping for customers and locking the store before the battery backup dies. Pretty wild to witness ESPECIALLY when its a tornado that killed the power and youre 1800 miles from home. Thats the first time I got stranded in an elevator. We made it back to the hotel but it took me 3 hours to get to my room. Damn elevator didnt even have a working phone and my cell service didnt work in that faraday cage.

I gotta get mine replaced, actually. It does surge protection still, but the battery inside is bad after having it for so many years, so anything plugged into the "battery" outlets end up spontaneously shutting off entirely when the power flickers (basically defeating the purpose of it)

Also worth mentioning that the internal batteries on these need to be replaced every 3-4 years. (Usually Sealed lead acid, like a car battery). It's not terribly expensive but neglecting to replace them can be. No one tells you it's got a consumable until your power lasts 35 seconds at 100%.

i got a ups for my consoles since we get alot of brown outs in my current home. at my other house we would just straight lose power then it would come back on. brown outs still maintain power but cause certain electronics to not fully shut down causing even more damage than just being shut down/unplugged. its like turning it on and off again multiple times in a short period of time. the ups doesn't last long but it certainly gives you enough time to safely shutdown everything. it also serves as a surge protector.

In developing countries, this couples with an Inverter is already a normal thing. Now, yes, there are UPS inverters, but issue with them is that their turnaround time is approx upto 18-20 ms, while an avg PC PSU can hold power upto 12-13 ms, thus even though those inverters are advertised as "UPS", they still can cause shutdowns or data loss. An avg UPS on the other hand has turnaround time of around 5-8 ms which is good. thus get a UPS for emergency situations, hut if you want longer backup, add an inverter to it.
@Toki-os8kx3 ай бұрын
You can get a power station that does the same and has a much higher capacity than a UPS and can power appliances for much longer. You can even keep gaming for a few hours depending on how power hungry your rig is. And yes, good ones, even reputable cheap power stations, support passthrough power so you can keep the power station charging while its powering other things

I have this exact battery... and it doesn't do shit. If you have a legit gaming pc, it won't power it. These days gaming pcs require FAAAAAR too much power to operate off a battery. That battery could probably run a console, or small devices. Mine keeps my router online. But even at full charge it can't support a gaming pc.

In my country it's pretty mandatory to have a UPS if you want to be a serious PC gamer, or if you work a lot on a pc (especially if you work from home). A surge protector is a good and cheap alternative if you only game, but if you work, you need the UPS in order to save whatever you are working on. I'll always have a UPS even if I'm in a country with far more stable electricity, just incase that once in a blue moon moment appears.

UPSes have saved my computers more from old 1st gen AFCIs tripping and have allowed me to preform electrical work without interrupting my servers at all, so still great even though power outages are less than a half day and twice a year at most in this part of the US especially often forgetting about the server when switching off the main, then finding out later that the upses kept everything running while new circuits were landed in the panel from experience avoid new non beige/modern logo APCs (post schnider electric purchase) they have a stupidly high failure rate and it defeats the purpose of a UPS if its the one interupting the power Eaton and Cyberpower work great, also older brands like tripp-lite and optiUPS have good things said about them

It is interesting. In Bangladesh when building a pc online it is a common practice to include UPS with it bcz of load-shedding. And we are used to think that in US people are lucky bcz they dont have to spend extra 3/4k on UPS.

As an alternative, for a more Multi-use device, you could consider a Jackery or EcoFlow power station. You allow it to "charge" off AC while powering your PC. This unit can then be used for other tasks should the need arise.

I use APC at home and it's what I use when I help others get setup. I have 4 in my house, one for my computer and another for the router and home security system. I keep the other 2, still sealed in the box, as secondary backups. If the UPS does I just grab a new one and swap them out and order a new backup. No need to wait 2 weeks for delivery and be scared the whole time. Oh and I have a generator in the garage that takes 5 mins to get running and provides enough power to keep the fridge, my computer, router, security system and a handful of lights on plus a 20gal tank of gas that will keep it running for weeks if needed.
