An enormous THANK YOU to all KZbin content creators for providing all of us with additional content during this very trying time! I can only speak for myself when I say you are helping me retain what little sanity I have left having been sheltered in place for the last 2 1/2 weeks!!

Kudos for your great design, it might be just what we are looking for in our woodworking area of a garage, too crammed with tools. We have tried buckets with liners with many pockets, and that works fine for home remodeling and construction, but when working on a woodworking project in the garage, that doesn't seem to encourage putting things back, maybe partly because nothing has a specific home. Or maybe because we have always walked away from the bucket? We might try something like your caddy. Or like a few of your caddies? I am trying to cure a case of dropping things mindlessly as soon as you go for the next tool, and not remembering where that second or third last tool was dropped when it's needed. None of the small tools have a home when we are working. (Except those that live in my apron pockets. But that's not big enough!) Or if they have a home, they are across on the other side of the garage. I really like the point you made that it's easier for you to put back the tool on the caddy than to set it down. That's a thought I'm going to bring forward with me as I try to solve this problem. But I'll have to put a lot of thought into what goes into it. If you don't mind, I will add a note here for readers who are looking for something a little different. I just built a different type of tool caddy or center for my better half's electronics bench. We got the idea from another KZbinr, Patrick Sullivan's "Instant Access Tool Center," and modeled it after that. A different use, but with the same goal of keeping things at the fingertips and keeping things put away. I have hopes that it might help. But for woodworking, and our garage, I just did not think something like his tool center would work for us, even though it seems lightweight enough to move. I think we do a different style of woodworking.

Good idea. I may use that with modifications. I always seem to be losing the tape measure. Having a home like that may help. With the addition of the other tools it could prove very useful. Thanks.

Takes me back to wood shop (woodwork) classes in (high)school. We had a rack of basic tools on every bench. It made pack-up quicker and reduced movement of students around the room. BB

I like the concept. I had something similar in mind a few years ago, a small rolling (floor standing) tool board that would hold the essentials. Then I made that big tool board and the idea died. BUT, your enthusiasm has made me reconsider and since I was going to remake the tool board anyway, I might dust this one off. Also had an idea for a pot rack type of thing directly above the bench hung from the ceiling with tools on all four sides, inside and out. Probably not great for filming and of course it would block my gantry.
@krtwood4 жыл бұрын
Adam has a bunch of rolling A frames very much like what you're talking about. I think our shops are too small for it. I've thought about the overhanging pot rack too. It would get in the way if you were working on a big cabinet. So I thought if I had high ceilings it could be hanging in way you could raise it up. But then you wouldn't be able to reach the stuff! Maybe on a gantry like yours and move it off to the side. I dunno, it's almost a good idea.

@@krtwood What I had in mind wasn't big, maybe 16 x 20 and 60 tall. Could have a car battery in the base to power a light on top.

This is great! I have been pondering something similar, also inspired by Adam Savage. I have a rolling 3 tier Ikea cart I inherited from my wife. I initially envisioned it as a glue or small parts cart but now I am thinking of building a similar contraption to yours and putting it on top of the cart. Thanks for sharing!

You have made me think. Wherever I am in the workshop my tape measure is the other end and usually well hidden in plain sight! Tool blind, I can spend too long looking for the thing when it is right in front of me! But I think, rather than a tool caddy, I need to buy more tapes. I have seen Diresta's solution, I'd rather not do that. I bought a pack of pencils, round and flat, all sharpened and ready to go. I just need to have a small tool wall at each workstation, ie, workbench, router table, bandsaw and table saw. each equipped with the basics of squares, pencils, tape measures, rules, etc. Possibly not cordless drills though! But they too are always at the other end of the shop to where I need them! The caddy is a good idea, but I feel it will always be where I'm not! Admittedly, if I have put everything back in it, I only need to grab the caddy. But that is a big if! I'm in my 50s and still haven't managed to put a thing back where it goes until I generally tidy up!

The advantage of a small shop is I'm never too far away from anything! I don't usually have a problem with the tape measure, but that little 6" ruler is the bane of my existence. I have one on a magnet at the bandsaw and I don't lose that one so you may be onto something there.

That open circular space inside the magnifying glasses headband could be room for a (2?) folded sanding disk(s)? Anyway, awesome idea! My work surfaces are covered with crap too, mysteriously.

I'm thinking above that. Maybe a roll of blue tape will find its way inside the glasses, but I don't want to make it stick out more.

Great idea. I just subscribed and am looking forward to exploring your channel. : ) Nice caddy! And really cool quick draw and quick change screwdriver/drill mod! I know. I did this in the middle of shop chaos, there was no way. The important thing was the why. Anyone else is going to have a different set of things they want to put in it so there isn't too much value in a specific build.

You're a bit of a crazy person, but it's entertaining, keep at it! I figure within a month you'll have either abandoned it completely, or you'll have stuck every single tool in your shop onto it, and it will look like habitat 67.

I'm not trolling, but why not just use mechanical pencils? Then you can have a more accurate line (thinner lead) plus noneed to stop working to sharpen. Just a thought.
