I like to think that if the show went on from it original 5 seasons run, there would've been a episode focusing on Putty's racism and him moving on from it since that what his character arc have been about. Rod Putty becoming a better and wiser man and truly earning the title of Reverend.

makes sense given Clay has a life putty would feel blessed to have and clay sees his own life as a curse. Clay knows putty envies his life so he rubs it in every Sunday, even though Clay doesn't even want his own life. A cold war between putty and Clay 100% makes sense to me. I wish the tight lipped animosity would've deepened as the show went on until it got to the point of being barely hidden and orel was forced to choose between his dad or the reverend. That would've been an interesting episode. Even more so if it occurred after the nature episode and orel ended up choosing Clay. Whooo my thirst for drama never ends lol.

Reverend Putty and Clay start off in similar states. Unhappy with their lives, both community leaders, religious, and the two people whom Orel seeks advice from the most. Whereas Clay burned practically every relationship he had, Reverend actively built up the sparce relationships he's formed. I chock it mostly up to Stephanie's good nature reflecting back at him. Even though Clay had Orel, his only legitimate child and one of the most good-natured people in Moralton, Clay never once in my memory learned from that. Two sides to the same coin.

I like how even though putty went on a hompohobic rant exclusively targeted at Danielle, orel at no point is homophobic towards Danielle or tries to convince him to "be straight" for the sake of salvation. Actually that might be because orel doesn't know any identities besides straight, If that, and so can't read Danielle as gay without blatant proof (also the two nice boys from the loyalty episode). It would make sense that he doesn't even know what being gay is given no one explains anything to orel properly. The adults just want orel to know something is bad and that he should be against it without explanation what the subject is or why its morally reprehensible. Which makes Putty's homophobic rant backfire on orel. So little is explained that the whole rant went over orel's head and didnt learn homophobia as putty intended.
