Welcome to the fourth part of my SpongeBob project! I plan on reviewing every SpongeBob episode ever, to determine which episodes and seasons are good, and which are pure ScumBob. In this video I review all 38 episodes in the fourth season, which includes giving fun facts, highlights, quotes, and a definitive answer as to weather I find it good, meh, or ScumBob. In addition, I talk about my favorite episodes in the season, talk about some misconceptions I had before re watching the season, and give some general notes, stats, and facts about the season. I'll always remember the day Dunces and Dragons aired. It was part of a 3-way airing Nickelodeon specials and movies all in January and February 2006. First was Drake and Josh Go Hollywood, then came The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour 2, and then finally SpongeBob Squarepants Dunces and Dragons. There couldn't have been a better time to be watching Nickelodeon.

I liked Drake and Josh Go Hollywood, but I disliked anything with the FOP. SpongeBob was the best that day. Nick was OK, but I liked CN, even though Toonami had (sigh) TOM 3... I liked Sara 2 more and loved Swayzak's cameo in the review of Rez, but after the Trapped in Hyperspace game got taken off CN's site, Swayzak was never acknowledged. Hell, they still don't acknowledge him and Jason DeMarco even HATES him. Everything after the Powerhouse era sucked IMO, even though I did like Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi and Teen Titans.

My theory is if there had been Patchy segments in "Have You Seen This Snail?" they would have been about Potty going missing and Patchy having to look for him. That would have been similar to the Spongebob part of the episode and they could have thrown in some jokes to lighten up the mood a bit.

Actually, Have You Seen This Snail? is one of my favorite episodes. I love the emotion, the pacing, and the climax is a lot of fun. I understand your complaint that it's a comedy, but comedy shows I always believe should have strong character interaction first, then jokes second. And Spongebob and Gary's relationship is genuine and adorable. Also, I really appreciate these videos! As the only Spongebob fan who still enjoys the show, I do appreciate someone going in with an open mind about the series and not going in with vitriol and hate.

Yeah, that's a problem any show has: having to do double-length. When something is double-length, it's usually worse since the writer/director is used to that specific time.

Well, there's 4 specials, but I believe he's only in 2, IIRC. The ones I know for certain is that one of them was great...and the other one not so great. I won't spoil it for you though. ;)

My top ten favorite episodes of season 4 and their reasoning 10. Best day ever the song is fun and the episode is relatable 9. The gift of gum I have a season 4 DVD and this episode is the one the cover art references with everyone being stuck in gum. 8. Squid wood I might get hated for this but I love this episode! 7. The rule of dumb funny Patrick episode 2006 6. Dunces and dragons cause of princess Pearl Top 5 5. Selling out cause of the "what'd he say garbage" line that's my favorite line of the episode 4. Fear of a krabby patty the complaint squid ward made was funny Top 3 3. Wishing you well cause of the scene where Patrick thought having claustrophobia meant squid ward is afraid of Santa 2. Mermaid man & Barnacle Boy 6: the motion picture this is cool. HONORABLE MENTIONS Patrick smart pants Krabs vs plankton Skill crane Enemy in law & krusty towers 1. Whale of a birthday because of the boys who cry song the ending and Pearl in general this episode is the best of all time! If you don't like it reply ok respect my opinion.

Interesting choices. I agreed with most of them, like Good Neighbors, the Thing, and All That Glitters being the worst of this particular bunch, but I did like some of them you didn't, like Rule of Dumb (I saw the crown largely as the cause of Patrick acting like a jerk, and not his natural behavior) and vice-versa, like Gift of Gum, which I consider the show's first true gross-out episode. Good luck on season five. While I don't find it as bad as most people seem to, it has those truly infamous episodes like To Love a Patty; Whatever Happened to Spongebob; and Atlantis Squarepantis. At least a lot of season five episodes are short because they did that weird three episode segment thing.

Hey thanks! It's an honor to have you watch my stuff. Animated Atrocities is one of the few cartoon review shows that is really great. You know your stuff. Season 5 will be really interesting. It's the first season that has a few episodes I haven't seen yet (Goo Goo Gas, a Flea in her Dome, and a few others). The three epsiode segment thing is indeed weird, but at least it'll be easier to review. Atlantis Squarepantis is really bad, though I'm not sure what I could say that you haven't already.

i actually really enjoy Best Day Ever, if not for anything else it's just really relatable and I have good feelings watching it. it's light on comedy, but Spongebob thinks he's gonna have this perfect day but one thing after another gets ruined but then everything comes together very sweetly when he was at his wit's end. it's nice to see that plus the song is really fun, just an enjoyable episode despite some flaws

SpongeBob’s crying voice also drastically changed in season 4 from season 3. Squilliam’s crying voice was also pretty different in Squilliam Returns (pre-movie) and House Fancy (post-movie) as well, though.

Mandy Martin I never said it had to make me die of laughter. It just has to make me laugh once, that's not really a tall order for a comedy show now is it? The show puts comedy over all else, so why shouldn't I? A good story is great, but no SB story is good enough to stand on it's own without at least a little comedy.

The ending to Funny Pants scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. It basically ends with Squidward forced to laugh with Spongebob's laugh box, and we get a really creepy scene showing that in the mix of his laughter, he's actually weeping in agony and goes mentally insane. On a separate note, I absolutely loved the Twilight Zone reference in the Skill Crane episode when the claw machine calls Suidward's name.

Fear of a Krabby Patty is the first episode to use the 3-D computer coloring rather than digital ink and paint or traditional cel animation. The colors are duller, and the characters' facial expressions are also different. Also Mr. Krabs' eye stalks are slightly shorter.

@@90sNath I’m pretty sure that shot in Jellyfish Jam was also computer animated, as well as another shot towards the end during the song in Jellyfish Fields. They way everything moves would be nearly impossible using cels. As far as I know it’s the only Season One episode with any form of digital animation.

I remember my first episode of the season was Selling Out, and I kinda noticed something was a bit off about this season. Though it was indeed a bit of a mixed bag, I LOVED Skill Crane and several of this season's episodes. You did a real nice job reviewing this season, and I agree with you that it certainly could've been handled much better than it was.

I like how your one of the only people to notice the character designs were off. There’s a weird thing where the voices were pitched up, the animation and audio looked like they were sped up, and there is a distinct Season 4 look that you can instantly recognize. Got a feeling Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy 6 was trying to harken back to 1960s cheesy, campy Adam West Batman, now that I think about it. Since they're largely parodies of the 60s batman show & the movie that sprang from it, or maybe it was the other way around, & the younger versions of them would be eventually voiced by Adam West & Burt Ward from that series, it seems like it's that. Plus, it's an extremely low-budget fan film, so it's even more funny.

Oh I'm not going to win many friends when I say that I think Gary Come Home was actually Dumped done right. Yeah I've mentioned before that Dumped is my personal least favorite pre-film episode and the only one that I never really look forward to watching. (Yes I actually look forward to watching I'm with Stupid, The Great Snail Race, Party Pooper Pants, The Sponge who Could Fly, and Ugh.) but here's what I'm getting at 1. They give Gary a legit reason to leave Spongebob 2. Patrick tries to help Spongebob instead of being an antagonist to him 3. The Happy Ending is just a Happy ending. Not like in Dumped where it was happy for Spongebob but sad for Patrick. Wow I never thought I would say that a post-film episode did a particular plot better than a pre-film episode. Also, as a kid, I always found Hocus Pocus to be boring. I guess after watching your review I can kind of see why. and that's when I really started to notice the flaws in Post-film Spongebob. My main problem with Enemy in law is how they changed Mama Krabs' voice. The original voice actor if you don't recall was Paul Tibbit. You know the guy who took over as the show-runner at the start of the Post-film era. and also co-wrote classic episodes like Chocolate with Nuts (Your favorite episode) and Frankendoodle (My personal favorite episode) which just prooves that he works much better as a writer than he does as a showrunner. and instead they had Sirenna Irwin do the voice who had done a bunch of voices on the show including Spongebob's mom and The Magic Conch Shell from Club Spongebob. I don't know why but I always loved how in Sailor Mouth and Mid-life Crustacean Mama Krabs was so obviously being voiced by a man and was pretty disappointed when she ended up being voice by a woman in that episode. So yeah on top of green lighting these horrible episodes Tibbit also had to stop voicing Mama Krabs.

I heavily disagree with PieGuy on “Selling Out”. It has a lot of funny jokes such as “What did he say, garbage?”, “Human Resources” and “They’re watching us”. It’s way more funny and meaningful than some episodes even from pre-movie like The Great Snail Race and Dumped (which he also decided to defend as being better than “Have You Seen This Snail” for some reason). Therefore I’d give it the benefit of the doubt and say it’s a good, and memorable episode. In fact I’d say he’s too harsh on a lot of episodes for “not being funny” or “too serious”. Again, dumped was a serious episode with a predictable ending, yet “All That Glitters” is somehow worse?! Seems like he’s a hypocrite for Seasons 1-3. I can guarantee if Dumped was a post movie episode then it’d be rated Scumbob. Don’t even get me started on “New Leaf”... I feel that Whale of a Birthday was unfairly ranked as well, considering Mr Krabs was always a stingy and terrible person in episodes like in Born Again Krabs where he sold Spongebob’s soul for 62¢ and almost cut someone’s arm off for a soda. Besides he’s just being stingy about the birthday food itself and not the food he feeds Pearl on a regular basis, so the fact that he says it’s child abuse, is a bit of a stretch, and a horribly hypocritical reason to call it “Scumbob”. Also for Hocus Pocus 38:36 if it didn’t reveal it, people would think that it’s a Squidward Torture P0rn until the ending. By knowing it’s not actually Squidward then it wouldn’t feel like Squidward is dead or in constant pain, distracting from the few jokes in the actual episode. In short, I’m not happy about how this list turned out, at all. Season 4 really deserves more love.

I noticed something interesting here recently. The statistics for the first half of Season 4 (according to PieGuy) are as follows: 12 Good Episodes 4 Meh Episodes 2 ScumBob Episodes Overall this would probably be a good season. But then there’s the second half... 6 Good Episodes 6 Meh Episodes 8 ScumBob Episodes The first half appears to be pretty good, while the second half seems to be pretty bad/mixed. It’s interesting to think that if each half of the season was its own thing, they would get completely different ratings.

i just realized something : in MM&BB the motion picture, pearl gets hyped about being a movie star but ends up being used as a prop... but since the boatmobil is invisible i think the implication is she's gonna be edited out in post production... its subtle, and they might not even have intended it, but it makes the joke 10 times better in retrospect.

I have kind of a special attachment to the episodes of this season, because they were a part of my childhood. I was around 4 or 5 years old when this season was first airing, and the first ever Spongebob episode I remember watching is The Lost Mattress. But, watching this video, and now looking through a lot these episodes with a critical eye, I agree with a lot of meh and Scumbob episodes. However, Fear of a Krabby Patty, The Lost Mattress, and Skill Crane will forever be in my Top 5 best episodes of Spongebob.

Okay I gotta call you out on the meh for the "Have you seen this snail?" Look Spngebob is very funny and can make us laugh but this was one of the few times where when it got serious it was good...not like the other attempts and I feel you're being really unfair to episodes like this all because it's not fill with stupid jokes. New Flash pie even shows that are billed as comedies can be serious at times. Ed, Edd'n, Eddy had episodes like this too. All I'm saying is that you need to be more objective in my opinion. I'm in no way saying season 4 and onward is good but you gotta say objective.

Another fun fact about Karate Island; Master Udon was actually voiced by Pat Morita aka Mr Miagi from Karate Kid. In fact, the episode is supposed to be dedicated to his memory as he died not long before that episode aired but for whatever reason, it has been removed from recent airings and is considered a deleted scene outside of the DVD releases (ie The First 100 Episodes)

I think this review was beyond amazing. Actually amazing isn't even a strong enough word for how awesome this season 4 review was. That being said, I didn't always agree on which episodes were good and which episodes were not. My favorite episode from this season has to be "All That Glitters." I LOVE Le Spatula and his sooty French accent. The constant screaming and crying by Spongebob didn't annoy me the same way it did with his laughter in "Funny Pants." "Squidtastic Voyage" as I've mentioned in previous comments physically makes me angry. It might have to do with how out and out stupid Patrick is to the point where the plot cannot move forward unless he is stupid and screws up again. The other Nickelodeon shows that used the shrinking down and exploring a person's insides plot are ones that I particularly like (I'm talking to you Rugrats and Jimmy Neutron), but not this one. Over the years I never actually understood why people thought this season was when the show was considered Scumbob. I know that many people hold seasons 1-3 in the holy grail that is classic animation and in a way I do too, but this season wasn't a total washout for me. Yeah Steven Hillenburg abandoned ship and the show was replaced with a subpar crew, but they didn't really start to screw the show up royally until at least halfway through the 5th season. I know I mentioned this at length only a few hours ago, but I think now is the time for the separate "Best Day Ever Marathon" video to tide us all over until season 5 is released sometime in the next few months. Oh, two really quick pieces of trivia about this season. In reruns and for no particular reason the episodes "Ghost Host" and "Chimps Ahoy" air in reverse. It started about a year after the original premiere of those episodes and it bugs me to this day. Also the episode "Karate Island" was dedicated to Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid) since I believe this was his last role before he died back in 2005. In the first few airings of the episode there used to be a quick flash of his picture right before the show would go to credits, but since it has been almost 10 years since he died and anyone who watches the show who was born in the 2000's doesn't know who he is anyway they stopped doing it. So in conclusion, I think this season should be considered a parentheses to seasons 1-3 since it was in fact a transition season. I remember all the hype surrounding the fact that the show was coming back. I was so excited I couldn't stand it and made sure to be front and center for the premiere. These days I don't even watch the show anymore. Also there haven't been any new episodes since "Spongebob, You're Fired!" aired back in November. That was 7 months ago. Apparently Nick says new episodes are coming this year, but it is halfway into 2014 and not one new episode. I guess they are going to air the new episodes in a premiere week with new episodes everyday like they used to do back in 2008-2009. I'm sure they are producing them as we speak, but for a network that cannot survive without the Sponge, that's too long to go between new episodes.

Here's an interesting fact about Chimps Ahoy, it featured 3 of the members of the Young Ones in that episode: Rik Mayall (who unfortunately died this year), Nigel Planer & Christoper Ryan. The only members that were missing was Adrian Edmondson & Alexei Sayle. Now if those two appeared, all the Young Ones would have appeared in Spongebob (for better or worse)

I have an interesting history with the episode "The Thing". I was born in 2001, so I was just 5 when this episode aired. I got it on a dvd on its own as part of a Happy Meal in the UK (I don't know why but...it was a thing back then I guess), and it was the first episode of SpongeBob I ever saw. I used to watch it all the time (since in the UK, "freeview" television at the time sucked), and I really liked it. Despite being a bad episode, I guess mixed in with it it still had that SpongeBob charm, as it got me into the show, and I remember trying to watch it whenever I could (because again, freeview sucked, and didn't include Nickelodeon or Nicktoons). Looking back on it now, I know it's a bad episode, but the sheer nostalgic value it has for me makes it so that I still (in a weird way) like this episode....

I confess I don't hate this season as much as most people do, mainly because it's another season I grew up with (I was born in 2001 and am currently 16). Although I do have to say one thing: HOW THE HECK DID I LIKE GOOD NEIGHBORS AS A KID!

It’s on the lower end, but Squidward yelling at Spongebob and Patrick to get through their thick empty skulls, was the highlight of the episode for me and enough to raise it to a meh for me. Also compared to other Squidward Torture P0rns later down the line, this is basically nothing.

My opinion: Seasons 1-3: Phenomenal seasons 4-5: Great seasons but 5 started slipping a little bit seasons 6-7: Awful! No excuse for this shit season 8: meh season 9: Really good. improvement over the last 3 seasons. season 10: Noice. Just as good as the first 3 seasons.
