I have a habit of playing SSX 3 pretty much every winter. There's nothing like picking a new character, decking them out in snow gear, working your way up the mountain and maxing their stats, only to then pick a playlist and free ride your way down the entire thing like a victory lap. The game has such a perfect winter atmosphere, and I never get sick of it. Just little things like the radio announcer, the loading screens on the lifts, and all the little venues you can ride to. It's like going on vacation.

SSX 3 is one of the few games I can confidently say will never get old. It's controls were so smooth and precise, the tricks were so cool and original, traversing the levels is so satisfying and had tons of replay value, there was so much freedom and exploration, especially for a game genre that could easily be seen as very restrictive when it comes to exploration, the music was absolutely perfect, the characters were cool, original, and interesting without ever feeling like they were trying to overshadow the gameplay, and of course, there was DJ Atomika. To anyone who hasn't played SSX 3 before, go online and buy it, dust off your PS2, slap that bad boy into the console, and start kicking yourself for not having played it sooner, you'll love it.

The lighting effects in SSX 3 was really something else. The snow had this glitter effect, like you could see the individual ice crystals. It was really cool, and still makes it look stunning. Also, the fact that you automatically found your way back on your feet after a huge air trick was very welcome. I can't remember how many times I went mad over landing on my head due to my character spinning the wrong way around when trying to land in Tricky.

I've only ever owned the SSX reboot and played a little of tricky, but I really got a lot of enjoyment out of the new one. I know it's a massive divergence from the old series, but I'm a snowboarder who enjoys freeriding (exploring the mountain, finding and working with new and weird terrain). It let me have that same feeling of trying out new lines, finding what's most satisfying to me and partially ignoring the scoring. And to be honest, the trick system is way over the top, but once it passes realism it's all the same to me. Nobody in a snowboarding game has ever pulled an oblique going for a crail, y'know?

@ShinyGaara654 жыл бұрын
From what I remember playing SSX2012, the controls were really slippery and I didn't feel like I was earning my spins and flips. It's the difference between a burger you make yourself (SSX3) and a McDonalds cheeseburger (SSX2012). Just because they're easier and you can stuff a bunch of 'em in your mouth, doesn't mean you feel as good eating them. SSX had a trick system where you felt like you were really putting effort in for those tricks. In 2012? You just hold a direction in midair and boom. 5 backflips and a sloppy landing. Without charging up or prepping the spin beforehand.

You talked about how ridiculous it was how involved the character movement for so little inputs but that's what you got with every other game too! I can vouch that the level design could've been better and more exciting, but you completely overlooked the fun and interesting challenges introduced by the individual goals of the seven deadly descents.

Personally, I actually liked SSX 2012 and it's my favorite in the series. To me, it was the series growing up ad the characters have. In the first game, they were all teenagers and young adults, but by the 2012 they were all in their mid 20s at the youngest and Zoe was in her 30s. It made sense to me that they would want to challenge something like real mountains; especially the dangerous ones like Everest and Kilimanjaro. This is just my reasoning for liking it. If they make a new SSX, I would like them to continue the timeline but have the SSX veterans train a new generation.

I love you and I love this game series. It's a shame EA owns it because they are a worthless trash company now. Even Ubisoft would be a better home for SSX at this point. Really gotta disagree about 2012's placement though. Yeah it was fairly sterile but so was On Tour. The courses felt good for the most part minus the death pits. Deadly Descents didn't add much to the gameplay but weren't awful to play. Music was amazing. Honestly It outclasses SSX and On Tour pretty easily by pretty much being a bunch of Untracked-style maps with SSX 3's gameplay. It's third only to Tricky and 3.

Who knows, maybe we'll get a new one in 2019 if the industry ever gets out of this hamster wheel of multiplayer Games as a Service TM with billion dollar budgets to the exclusion of everything else that doesn't make ALL THE MONEY and only makes SOME OF THE MONEY. Yeah, I have to agree. I thought 2012 was easily the best out of the post-SSX3 games. It had a lot of flaws but the things it got right, they got REALLY right. Definitely not comparable to the trash heap that's Tony Hawk 5. If SSX 7 was made and it directly improved upon 2012 mechanics-wise while keeping the level design/aesthetic of Tricky and 3, then it would be an amazing game. Sadly, that will never happen.

I think SSX Tricky is the best. It is the most fun out of all the SSX games. It has the best characters and maps hands down. SSX 3 has the best character customization (The gear/clothes in On Tour are too plain compared to 3) without a doubt but the maps get old very fast with it being so bland. Every map being on one big mountain makes most of the maps look too similar which will get boring after a while. So that’s why overall I think SSX Tricky is the best.

'I'm so close to 1000 subscribers'. WOW. That shows that list videos are effectively the current equivalent of let's plays. That being said, you sure make some good lists and I've now seen all of them released so far.

SSX 2012: The tricks are too crazy, it just looks silly. SSX on Tour: The tricks are so crazy, it's incredible. I'm not defending SSX 2012, but you can't just be a hypocrite like that.
@michaelwilliams23295 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the control system itself, hence why he pointed out that he could get these “crazy” trick by just holding up making it feel lazy and look silly.

Great video and I totally agree! I was just playing SSX 3 on my Xbox One X and it looks, sounds and plays PHENOMINALLY! Games like this are why I love classic games and the fact that Xbox cared to have this original game look and play better than ever without the need to buy the game again is a total win!

This is an excellent analysis! I really enjoyed the in-depth discussions of the art style as well, as I feel like sometimes these aspects are overlooked when discussing SSX games, which I think is a shame because they have such a distinct look.

Extremely well put together video. SSX3 was one of my favorite games. The radio big and open world feel was so unique. Main menu and peak 1 music still some my fav tracks. The dev team went above and beyond on that one.

Man the SSX franchise is a huge nostalgia trip for me. I definitely agree with those sticking up for the 2012 reboot, I'd say it's at least as good, if not better, than On Tour. From the games I've played, my own ranking from best to worst would be SSX3 -> 2012 -> On Tour -> Tricky, but they all have a special place in my heart and the list mixes up for me all the time. I dug On Tour's more punk aesthetic, but the new uber system and controls made the game feel much easier than it really should have been, and while I love Tricky, compared to the newer ones, the linearity just mostly reminds me of how awesome the more open tracks of later games were (though those tracks were a dream to play on on their own). The reboot definitely suffered a bit from losing some of the series' personality, and I totally get where people come from when they say the visual style feels bland and repetitive. For my money, though, despite the things lost in the reboot, I really dug what the game added into the mix. I think the deadly descents were a great addition to the formula, and if the franchise ever continues I would hope they would become a series staple. The online features were also great, not needing to pair up with friends to play (instead playing against their ghosts) is a great feature, and when they added simultaneous multiplayer is was even better. But yeah, the online presence quickly died off, the microtransactions were bleh, and a few of the descents were pretty iffy (the avalanche backwards cam was a pretty weird one). The Eddie DLC brought back the more wacky, funky style of the previous games, but by then it was too late.

I couldn't stop smiling at the last two ssx games. I remember playing those games for HOURSSS. Especially ssx3. JEsus Christ what a game that was. Fantastic video. Subbed!!

It's funny. I tried going back to On Tour years later and I'm not sure why, but it wasn't as fun as I remembered. I think putting way more time into 3 than I ever did as a kid kinda ruined it for me. But hey, to each their own and good video regardless. 3 is always the best anyway. ;) where's the plug n play tricky game by the way?

lol well that was actually called "Play TV Snowboarder" so I didn't really think it was a true SSX title. I thought about including that though.

Dude, SSX (2012) was actually pretty freaking addicting if you got out of career/story mode. The amount of courses were almost endless from easy- ef you hard. Plus the online mode was addicting to keep bettering yourself against others rather than personal records. I remember being first for many times and just the feel of "being the best" ego was really fulfilling

SSX3 was my first and so far only game that I've owned from the series. It just happened to be one of the three games that I purchased along with the Xbox initially, no hate for the others. I guess it was fortunate that this game was my introduction to the series because I wholeheartedly agree with all of your points.The part that struck me the most was the fluid transition between the tracks. At first you were greeted with very arcade-ish and flashy levels, but as you progressed the atmosphere took a far more serious turn. You'd constantly find yourself immersed in the desolate and at the time alien peaks in contrast to the levels you played over and over to get there. If you made it back down to familiar terrain it sure gave you a feeling of comfort and safety, as if you're home free. Definitely gave me a nostalgia trip lol. Enjoyed the video along with the others on your channel!

Only thing I would change is putting SSX 2012 at the very bottom. At least Blur retained some elements of the zany, creative attitude prevalent throughout the series. SSX 2012 introduces DEATH in a series where a character rides in a damn tanktop.
