Love Bill Hader for Stefon, but we should give props to Seth Meyers for not breaking during any of Hader's shenanigans. You'd have to have a pretty good grip on yourself not to break. Also, when Seth says, "Relax, buddy you're gonna do great." I feel as though he's speaking to Hader, not Stefon. Bill, as we know, has a history of crippling stage fright.

he was shaking during the skit before that one too :-; however, the stefon skits are probably best case scenario for having an attack on tv and having to perform through it - sitting there, reading hilarious descriptions (that he genuinely seems to laugh at) and the only other person performing with him is a friend. it also helps that stefon’s normally odd behavior masks most of it. it would’ve been much worse if he was doing another skit while walking around and with more people.

@@DN..11 It's a bit of both. Hader has said he had anxiety about playing Stefon at first as he didn't want to offend alternative subcultures. You can see him uncomfortable in the first few WU segments. And as a tic he did bring his hands up to his mouth. Seth "calming" Stefon was in fact Seth calming Bill. But as his did get more comfortable with the character (from repetition and positive feedback) that nervous tic became a "character trait" to help Bill hide is laughing. @overlydramaticpanda
@overlydramaticpanda 4 жыл бұрын
@@minioop2 I mean, realistically it's probably a mixture of both, but at least part of it is definitely down to anxiety. Bill's said in a few interviews how anxious he got on a regular basis while doing SNL. In the second Stefon appearance especially there's several signs that point to him being at least on the verge of an anxiety attack - he rushes through a lot of his lines, he fidgets quite a lot (not just the normal 'Stefon' tic of fixing his hair and covering his face but he seems to constantly be wanting to occupy his hands with something), his voice is at a slightly higher pitch and a little strained right from the start, his hands and arms are shaking (quite badly at one point), he doesn't laugh as much as normal, his body language is very defensive (again, more than normal), and he throws in a "please" in response to Seth saying he'll wrap things up. Still, as a fellow performer who suffers from anxiety attacks, I hugely admire him for powering through it and disguising it well enough for this to even be a debate. Apparently there were several instances of him having panic attacks either just before or even during sketches while he was on SNL and I swear you'd never know anything about it if he hadn't admitted it. The man's a powerhouse...
