ETA: Okay, I appreciate the love this comment has gotten over the last 2 years, but y'all gotta stop replying with "and Dan Cortese." My comment began with "THIS Stefon sketch..." THIS Stefon sketch most notably does NOT have Dan Cortese, which is why I didn't mention him. I guess it also means I was wrong - this Stefon sketch DOESN'T have everything 😱

John Mulaney created the Stefon character with Bill Hader. John always loved it whenever Bill would break character during the skits, so he used to try to throw him off by replacing some of his lines on the cue cards at the last minute so he'd be reading a joke for the first time. Since John no longer works there and Bill invited him to come do this cameo character, John decided to just say something ridiculous to throw him off again.

@@elenat.3968 - "A Closer Look" is a political segment that Seth Meyers does on his current late night talk show. Seth used to be the news correspondent on SNL's "Weekend Update" and he'd continuously invite Stefon, where they would both shamelessly flirt. Stefon attempts to do "A Closer Look" here and is asked why he's doing Seth's bit. Stefon insinuates that they roleplay (sexually). So instead of Seth being on top and Stefon being under the desk, the roles are reversed. It's meant to be a tongue-in-cheek joke at Seth's expense. If you're confused about what one of them would be doing under the desk, let's just say that one would be giving an "oral" presentation. It's a dirty joke.

Dusty Pope And You would not be wrong for thinking that at all, because John Mulaney designed for it to be a live, crazy, off-the-cuff 'Mad Lid' Reading by Bill Hader. John Mulaney-the real mastermind behind making the Jokes for the 'Stefon' Sketch-is notorious for throwing Bill off-course with His last-minute Lines that Bill is actually reading for the first time as He sees them on the Cue Cards that John has just changed-up on Him! Whenever You see Bill crack up, then You'll know that John was involved! He said this when He was on 'Late Night With Seth Myers'.
