I remember watching The Night Watchman as a child so this brought back such vivid memories of sitting in the living room smiling at the tv!

I love how all the mice find objects to use as instruments but one just straight up has a tiny trombone 4:44

Oh, NOW that musical sting in The Crackpot Quail makes a whole lot of sense.

It just shows how much a genius Carl Stalling and to a degree Milt Franklyn was. Since Milt probably did the arrangement in the shorts even when Carl did the actual score.

For The Crackpot Quail, the quail's raspberries and the dog's imitations of the quail's raspberries were replaced with whistle noises in the theatrical release as the raspberries were considered rude and The Hays Code has rules against rude gestures, noises, etc. You might be remembering the whistle noise as it is heard in every rereleased version of this cartoon (HBO MAX, The Golden Age of Looney Tunes, and when it airs on TV) except for Tex Avery Screwball Classics Volume 3, which is were the copy used in the video (and future videos with clips from this cartoon) is from. TLDR: You may be remembering the whistle used in most copies of the cartoon; the razzing noise used here is the original version before the censors changed it.

I had a hunch the Hays Code or at least television censors was responsible on why the raspberry was replaced with whistle.
