Pay Sohla. Bon Appétit pays none of their BIPOC staff for ANY of their video appearances. That means Sohla, Rick, Gaby, Priya, and Christina have NEVER been compensated for their video work while their white coworkers (Brad, Claire, Molly, Carla, Delany, Chris, and Amiel) have. Compensate your BIPOC Bon Appétit. Inacceptable.
Edit: This video is meant to highlight Sohla's expertise (and not compare her to her coworkers). The reason these clips are from Gourmet Makes is because (as an avid viewer) I knew Sohla has shared so much knowledge on that show. I don't know if anyone makes money from video appearances, but I know that Sohla (and Rick, Gaby, Priya, Christina) has never made money from any of the recipe videos they create or the challenge videos they take part in while Claire, Brad, Chris, Delany, Molly, and Carla do. Thanks!
edit 2: I am not making any money from the video this channel isn’t even eligible for monetization.
(also this very clearly is not every time)

And for some reason Chris was "deemed" the tempering chocolate expert a some-odd months ago.. (I remember the ASMR video). If someone doesn't have the experience or skills, I practically do not see why a company has to push forward "expertise"/ethos. It was only until BA had a hold of a 15-yrs-experienced, rare, and valuable employee that things became legit. (I guess in the tempering chocolate world only...)

Tamara agreed. She makes most of her co-workers look like home cooks, or complete beginners. She has over double the experience of everyone around her, but doesn’t even get paid or have the same opportunities as everyone else. I think she should really have her own personal series, and honestly I’d love to see her host a few episodes of gourmet makes too? She NEEDS to have a series where she plays around and experiments with food- she blossoms in the creative department from what I see.

Also Sohlas job isn’t appearing in videos. It’s to develop recipes and to write and research about food for the magazine. The videos are on top of that and thats one of her critiques, that she (and other POC) are pushed in front of video and aren’t compensated separately like the other food editors are. It’s all quite shitty. Makes me sad. I love BA.. Sohla used to be head chef of her own restaurant with her husband, she developed her entire menu after working at Michelin star restaurants. She’s is definitely seasoned in creating recipes- which is the actual job description. 😭

This has happened in many workplaces I've been in. The managers spot the most talented, hardest working people and then give them as many extra duties as they will take on, without extra pay. The employee thinks, "Great! I'll show them how valuable I am and I'll be rewarded." The manager thinks, "Great! This fool will do half of my job and I don't have to ask for a higher budget." The reason you will never get a raise is that the manager doesn't want to explain to the bosses that an intern is actually doing most of his work for far less pay. Reminds me of when Samuel L. Jackson talked about everyday casual racism, and how it's like a death by a thousand paper cuts. Other people think "oh, it's just a paper cut, what's the fuss" -- but you've got thousands of paper cuts on you already, and you'll get many more in the future until you waste away completely. Nothing frustrates me more than somebody who's more privileged than most people say that racism or sexism doesn't exist because it's never happened to THEM, and if you point that it's happened to you, they'll say you're exaggerating and using bigotry to hide your own faults, and if you point out that it's happened to others, they'll just shrug their shoulders and tell you to mind your own business because you don't know the "other side of the story." Listening to that kind of people talk makes me want to go Super Saiyan and rip out all of the walls and flooring, rghrh.

Not only that but youre making up a completely random hypothetical, as if somehow youre making a point over an event that does NOT exist. White Sola wasn't treated this way. Brown Sola was. These situations do exist. If there is ever an issue where white people are being treated unjustly at this level of professionalism, then say something. @@Namiis23 like Fk Urid said, funny how an out of context joke was taken this far. I don’t see how I was making excuses or trying to garner sympathy, rather giving context to a situation and my own personal experiences. It isn’t called racism because it’s systemic... has there been laws and systemic racism in the past? Of course, but show me one law and case that is active today that shows systemic racism in the United States and together we can get rid of it. And isn’t life a set of hypotheticals? That is exactly what philosophy is based off of and used to garner how we are supposed to treat each other. For instance, people often say “if this person was white this wouldn’t happen,” but they aren’t white and by your logic that argument cannot be used. I love Sohla and I support her by watching all of her new videos on The Babish Culinary Universe where she is treated as an equal with clear respect by the crew. I also don’t appreciate the hostility in your comment towards me because it can be perceived as rude and belittling when I was only giving insight into my work experiences, as mentioned before. While “white people” have not experienced racism to the extent people of color have in the modern day, trying to silence their voices is belligerent in its own right and is on its way to becoming as such. Silencing a group of people based on race, gender, sexuality, non-violent political affiliation, or even a haircut is wrong and should not be tolerated and I will not stand down because I was told to “Save it.”

She brought less than some of her co-workers and was therefor remunerated less. "If they were all expected to just make appearances, that would be one thing, but none of the people of color got their own shows" So you've already explained why your first point is bullshit. There's a difference between running your own show and making an appearance in one. Showrunners get paid far more than somebody who pops in for a few seconds to give advice while they are doing the work they are otherwise being paid for. "or even got paid for videos that they starred in (or at least got paid Significantly less). And that's bullshit." Why is that bullshit? If Claire from BA who has one of the largest shows on the channel made more money than Brad who bring in far less viewership would that be bullshit and an example of systematic sexism at BA? No. It would be an example of a woman being worth what she brings in and not worth what's between her legs. People are individuals and are assessed as such. After the video of Sohla, Carla, and Chris I thought Sohla should get her own show. Seeing her creativity, expertise, and ingenuity when it comes to food is amazing to watch. If she had a show where she takes "normal" food or popular snacks (kinda like gourmet makes) and reversed engineered them into experimental I think that would be sick. At the very least she deserves way more than she's been given and I can't watch BA until the fix and atone for their mistakes.

I did not unsubscribe from their channel but I wouldn’t have known the difference since they haven’t uploaded any content since the story broke. This is partially because the other editors are refusing to film, in solidarity with Sohla, Priya, and other BIPOC at BA. Also their emails have almost completely stopped except for updates about how they are working to turn this shit around and getting a new editor in chief. It’s not just paying BIPOC for appearing in videos and compensating them for just how much they bring to the fable. They’re also looking at where white editors have appropriated foods from other cultures and bastardized their ingredients or techniques. It’s about who gets to cook what kind of cuisine From the looks of it they are taking this matter extremely seriously. That said, they’re still overseen by Condé Nast, which is a publishing group that has not been good to non-white editors, writers, and staff. Maybe this will create a sea change at Condé Nast as well? Only time will tell.

Working pastry cook here. Y’all are 100% right that Sohla can cook circles around some of her peers. She has clearly gone through a shit ton of R+D for her own menus. Every Chef (capitol C) running a kitchen should be at her level or above, period. That said I find it almost impossible to believe Clair does not know how to temper chocolate. Pastry is specialized for a reason and not having that skill in your repertoire would straight up lose you a ton of respect in a pastry kitchen. If you’re at the level that Clair is at, it would probably cost you your job. I’m hoping it was an excuse to incorporate more of the unpaid cast and not a blind spot in her knowledge.

Did some research. I assumed Clair had more hands on real world kitchen experience. I do think she is at the right knowledge level to make reverse engineering recipes into a good show (no drama if it’s almost perfect the first time). But I over estimated her resume and BA standards. I totally believe she hasn’t tempered chocolate since culinary school. There’s no way in hell I would admit that I didn’t know how to temper on camera if I was an editor at BA. I’m sure she quietly lost some respect that day.

Childofthe1truKING It’s an ongoing scandal that resulted in the resignation of Adam from his Editor-in-Chief position at BA and increased scrutiny of Anna Wintour and Condé Nasty as a whole. Basically, photos leaked of Adam and Allison Roman both in racially insensitive costuming/brownface. This led to the revelation that only the white editors were paid for video content at BA. Sohla was only making $50k salary despite many more years of experience than other higher paid white coworkers. Claire made $20k minimum per video while a black guest chef was paid $400. These are just some of the details that leaked. Vulture just published a pieces tracking all of it and more. Details continue to leak. Carla sent targeted emails while white guys like Delaney were allowed to continue visiting the kitchen without permission. Matt H, the editor has been suspended and Delany’s misogynistic tweets were compiled and screenshot. Keep up. Everyday systemic racism is alive and well.

Lots of places to read up on the scandal, but Vulture has comprehensive coverage of it and similar scandals that also broke around the same time. Then, of course there are the emails, photos, and tweets. It’s a reckoning. Some were directly responsible for the culture and practices while others were complicit. So glad the team is fighting back against her mistreatment and that she had the strength to speak up and share it

Souls is my fav person. And she is always so positive and daring. I have never made one her recipes “correctly “ but I love all her videos.

I always loved watching Sohla's videos because she has such a great, bubbly personality. I was so sad to hear that she and other BIPOC were not compensated and mistreated by BA. She's a gem!
