I just spent over 2 hours troubleshooting cloud collab and for some reasons all videos seem to leave this out (maybe too obvious? idk). Thank you for the video though Chadwick! We had a problem with (re)linking the proxies. Even though they live in a Google Drive folder we both have access to, my file path looks different from my collaborator's file path. So if I link the file, it gets unlinked for him, because the project only has one file path per file. How to solve??? Enter PATH MAPPING! This feature translates allows Resolve to understand /file/path/1 as an equal to file/path/2. This helps translate between individual machines in separate domains, translate Mac to Windows file paths etc. Go to Project Preferences (cog in the bottom right in Resolve) > Path Mapping. Enter the file path to where your proxies or files live. Save. Now your collaborator can go into the same menu and hit the "Browse..." button on the right, and enter the path to where their files live. Hope it helps somebody! : )

Excellent overview. Despite watching a few other videos on these new features, I actually get what the heck is going on! I really like how Blackmagic is approaching this. This is in contrast to folks like Autodesk, the behemoth of CAD software, where their moves into "collaborative cloud" systems have been 100% focused on locking users into subscriptions and keeping critical files on their cloud. BM is giving off-ramps for stopping the recurring fees and keeping files on users' own computers, which is super important. One now pointless thing stood out - Davinci should have had this level of proxy handling several years ago back when many people were struggling to cope with 4k footage, but it's great that it's here now. And yes, I very much hope that Blackmagic sends out their new hardware to folks like you who can review them from a working perspective. Personally, I am very interested in the Cloud Pod as an alternative to trying to juice up a Synology NAS to edit files from a central location over a LAN.

I feel like the live collaboration on the same timeline is a massive difference between other NLE's like Premiere. Premiere has team projects which are a: limited to business level accounts and b: require significant higher monthly fees and mostly importantly C: really on'y allow for faster timeline sharing. There isn't anyway, that I know of, where you can split up the work like colour and fx, while editorial is still occuring. Resolve is really taking the cake on this one. If only you could do a mastering/mixing pass while editing was happening. Maybe someday. Auto bin locking is also next level.
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Great points Aaron, very insightful! I'm not sure how mixing while editing would be possible because they're both timeline based, but - a common workflow is to lock a version, say for a screening, and then bounce out mixed splits for that - and then the editor will cut with the mixed splits on their timeline for future iterations and duplicated sequences. (muting the original audio)
@avdcam2 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips Yah I think that's what I'm hoping, as a workflow, might have an opportunity to change... Agreed they are both editing timeline, and the editing should remained locked, however, you could do a lot with track based or even down the road metadata based audio editing (kinda like how the colour panel works now in a sense). Even right now, they could potentially unlock the mixer panel in fairlight, while keeping the timeline locked in fairlight. If we could make track level adjustments, apply plugins, (let's say after a track order has been agree upon), adjust dynamic and processing, you might be in a position to keep cutting and adjusting timing even while a mixer is working on the mixing side of things. Sure an Audio Editor would have their hands tied, unable to do a foley pass or sound design pass without splitting out the timeline, but the mixer/mastering might still be possible while editorial is still fine tuning. Have you ever used FCPX? I always had this dream of a more metadata style workflow with audio mixing, and FCPX's role based system (vs tracks) is one method that could have some potential for a new mixing/mastering paradigm. If track assignments could be assigned through metadata instead of just manual placement, you could break apart some of the roles of the mixing stage and avoid bouncing mixes that get out of sync when changes are made. It could also lead to a much faster viewing/zooming adjustments (like in fcp) where you can focus on just the FX tracks quickly or just the VO tracks while minimizing the rest (fairlight does have some elements of this with the tracks resizing tools, but it's much more manual). Anyway, I could see a powerful case for a fairlight view that locks the timeline per se, but allows audio fx, audio adjustments and tracks adjustments to be enable for the audio mixer. Not unlike how a colourist has access to clip level adjustments and fx, but not timeline or track position. Add a little refresh symbol on the mixer panel in the edit view, and bam. All that being, said as I research the collaboration tools in other NLE recently to compare with where Resolve is now, it's fascinating. Adobe has had project level collaboration for years, but I really never tried it. Being locked to team level plans was a likely culprit, but damn even after years of it being around, it seems all you can do is lock/unlock timelines and share timeline changes (without a timeline comparison tool mind you) and offers nothing like realtime collaboration. I can't wait for Canada to go online, being able to colour or do fx in the same timeline is Google Drive level innovation.

It surely gives people the idea and how it can be done. I have a feeling when I start though that a lot of those steps are going to be trial and error for awhile. Baby steps for me. I still haven't got my head around the proxy generator completely. I think the confusion with the proxy generator is when people don't have their original media in one location, it's not self explanatory as to how to approach that. My guess is to organize the original media into one folder then drag it onto the proxy generator would keep it to the most simple config. Good job on this Chadwick.
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
That always means a lot coming from you Jim. Thanks! Yes writing proxy files to the same location doesn't always make the most sense. I would imagine this is a possible future update that can solve this. The extract command already tracks to move, so it seems like it could be a simple task. The thing I want to try soon is the render farm scenario to batch dailies with it. I also wish I could bake LUTs in to send to other systems.

@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nathan, I'm not sure I'm following the question though. Are you referring to the new Cloud Store they announced? If so, that actually is a NAS, and "should" work with any type of files - but the way they are dealing with the remote sync or viewing is just using dropbox. Files would live and be worked on locally, but using dropbox as an intermediate step to move them. I hope to have a cloud store mini in soon to work with and answer more questions.

Such a good video - thank you! I'm only confused about one thing - when you're adding new files (like the disclaimer image) onto the timelines, how did davinvi know to place the PNG into dropbox / how did it know where to place it in the dropbox so it would sync to your second editor's machine. Do I have to do something specific to my cloud project for this to happen automatically? I'm not using a proxy workflow for my project so maybe that's part of the problem?

yeah, it depends on the size of the project - If my projects are going to LA for color, they usually go with Fedex on a drive. You do have a couple other options, one is to bake a flat prores master out for them, or run media manager to just send the clips with some handles.

So the production sent the colourist and I physical drives. We did have trouble at first; each time one of us linked to the media, the other was unlinked. We solved this by going to project settings and using the Path Manager to set the local location of our respective drives. As long as folder structure matches, this works fine. I'm not sure why we needed to do this; in other demos (yours included) this wasn't a problem even though you must have different paths to your local DropBox folders. Thank you for this video man! My editor and I slayed 3 projects with this cloud workflow! He works on it in NYC when I'm working on it in Japan. Because of the time difference, we can take turns without hopping on the same project together. However, sometimes it would be laggy & slow. For example, I would hit the play button but it would be a few seconds before it would play back. Both of us have all the files stored locally. Is there a way when one of us take over, we can edit as smooth as a non-cloud project?
@CreativeVideoTips Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Ah you are struggling with the physics of internet latency around the globe. NYC to Japan is a tough one. Essentially how it works is you are both hooking into the database that was setup based on the location when it was created. I use US-East since I'm in NY and it feels like a local project. If you're using US east in Japan that makes sense because there are at least 50ms latency across the oceans fiber connections. The workaround would be to do a copy project (button on the project manager), to make it local while working. Then do a copy back to the cloud for him to work in NY. If you worked this way I would be sure to date your project names to keep them organized.

Also, if my co-editor has already placed a bunch of in and out points on clips for his version... wouldn't messing with those effect his timeline or trip him up if he revisits those clips? My cut will likely be a bit different, so I want to set my own without messing with his clips. If I can see where he put in/out points, won't he see where I move them to? I need workflow advice ha.

We want to share an entire tv series with 6 episodes currently and 20 TB of footage and many graphics, etc. When the collaborator opens his projects offsite all his media will be offline, right, even if he has a duplicate of all the media on a drive connected to his system. It will all have to be reconnected, right? We are hoping to test this tomorrow but please give me any tips that would help with this. Thanks again. :)

It works good as long as you have a sync in place - Your root folder and the rest ideally are mirrors of each other. Then there is a setting in the project settings for "path mapping" at the bottom. On the first relink this should set itself there and on the local computer this should be the directory of that local footage. Also - do the relink with the chain link icon for best results. Then you should be all set.

also to note - 20TB of footage is a lot to keep in sync - I would suggest 1080p ProRes Proxy files for anybody that isn't outputting the masters.

Thanks very much for getting back to me so quickly. Actually I’m the colorist and I always work with the full resolution footage in the final stage of the production. We have really fast computers and drives so I’m not concerned about the volume of footage. Thanks for your assistance. This is great info.

Biggest question - do both editors need to have the cloud pod? If my editor already has the footage, does the box allow for the collaboration functionality?

Hey guys, awesome video! We have some trouble, maybe you had face that also and can help. We made proxy direct in DaVinci and sync that via the cloud to the cloud project. The cutter make his work and then the problem pops of, I want to render the video and in time line i see the cuttet version of my cutter and after rendering, at clips which are made from in-and-out points, the content which have to be in the clip is wrong. Also when render in place the content of the in and out are also wrong. Did you have an idea what's the problem is? Also when we face the issue, the cutter relink the media it's the same issue.

Really informative video thanks. I'm still just a little unsure about how the proxies over Dropbox works.. Do you send just the proxies without the original media through Dropbox and the person on the other end is able to edit with that footage just using the proxies? Or would they also need the original media?

What an awesome start to a Sunday. Thanks your clean install video I am loving the new upgrade . the cloud collaboration is awesome and I am setup on it now. The sync demo was great. Thank you for this walk through is so very helpful Thank you Chadwick ! Here is the question you asked for. What about assets ? images, Pictures, SFX and items that we might have in our Power bins. Do we have to locate and duplicate the assets to put into the sync bins ? What about Lut's and Fusion titles, fonts and other things that another editor might have when we do not.or something we have and they do not ?
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Heck yeah, thanks for your continued encouragement Kevin! Yes power bins all of the assets you mentioned need to get transferred and in some cases installed on the editors computer. You can move local power bins with a dummy project to your new cloud library only containing the power assets. But they would need to be removed and relinked to a cloud shared folder. LUTs would and templates need to be imported each time because they are always looking at a local directory. One thing we learned doing this is my motion vfx title does not come across to Jeff’s computer. I suppose this is because of licensing or just not being installed. Fusion clips show as offline in the color page only, I think that might be a beta bug. Basically “normal” assets in a Dropbox folder should appear on everyone’s systems but things like LUTs and templates need to be properly imported or installed.

hey thank you so much for a very clear video explaining this great feature in resolve. I have a project in which i have a remote editor. we both have the original files on our own harddisks. but i want to be able to link the proxies in a way that lets each of us have our own proxy locations...we tried to use google drive for proxies but his file path for google drive will be different than mine...and anytime I relink my proxies...it makes his offline. how do i fix this so that we both use our own paths for proxy?
@paulrossjones22342 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the video. Can you tell me if there is anyway of making proxies with any kind of LUT/look, ie, I don't think I would like to be editing proxies in log (if they are shot this way).
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Super smart question - and the answer is yes! However - it means you must create them the old fashioned way. But actually how most dailies are still done on set for larger productions. You need to place the files on a timeline - apply the look on the color page or with RCM - then export on the deliver page as "individual clips" and filename uses "source name". Another important step is to add reelnames which you setup in the project settings - general options - typically you want assist using reelnames turned on and using embedding in source clip file. I think Blackmagic ignores the need for this in the new proxy app because they want you to do everything in Resolve, but we all know that's not the case for most postproduction pipelines. Hope this helps!

Great video man, one question why do you prefer dropbox over google drive?
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for watching! I honestly don't love either of them, but I do like that dropbox is working on replay which is a much better video player. The new Cloud Stores will work with Google Drive and Dropbox is what they say. If you already are invested in Google Drive, I would not switch.

I'm still a little lost. What if I want to create footage in two different locations but I'm the creator (working remotely 3 days / week)? I feel all BM Clould examples show how to share a full project for edit / coloring, but how would I set up actual physical footage creation?
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Hi Per, you can certainly do this. The secret to making it work is having a synced dropbox or google drive folder at the different locations. Location A and B both create media locally, blast it up to a synced dropbox/drive folder, and it can auto download to new physical location. In general you want to keep parity of all the files in each location because you'll be in the same project and otherwise you'd have missing offline files.

Absolutely. This is the Keychron C2 - geni.us/keychron-c2 - I think it's a must to have a full size keyboard for editing video, because of the number pad. I go through keyboards every year or so but this one is really great, especially for the price. Highly recommend.

I currently edit BRAW files into an ISO from an ATEM and collaborating with my team would be soooo nice!! One file for us ends up being 170+ gb each. So it adds up. Thankfully we use 4 files weekly and iso is another 200gb with graphics, audio and other recorded on atem

When my remote collaborator linked his proxies it caused the project on my side to use his proxy paths; this broke the proxy connection. I'm afraid that if I update the proxy path on my machine again it will just break the remote collaborator's proxy path. What am I missing here? Another quick question: Is the proper workflow to always start with the full resolution files in the project and link them too the proxies? Or can you start with the proxies and link them to the full res later?

Thanks for the amazing video, Chad! One problem I'm bumping into is I can't get "Project backups" to work on my Cloud-based Multi User projects. The other day I lost a lot of work because I didn't notice I hit Ripple Overwrite in the Speed Editor without noticing and so I kept working and "Live save" kept saving my work and the mistake in the process. The next day I noticed the issue but I had no way to roll back to a version before the "accident", as no backups were being made, even though the "Project backups" option was checked. To be clear, "Live save" is working fine. But sometimes one needs the ability to roll back to a previous version. I've tried using different "Project backup locations" in different drives, unchecking and checking the relevant checkbox in the user preferences but no luck :(
@CreativeVideoTips Жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah this is one of the biggest drawbacks to multiuser projects. The only way to get incremental backups is to turn off, even if just temporarily the multi user option. The devs say it’s because they don’t want to be interrupting other people’s flow in the same project. I wish it was a choice we can make though.
@satnemip Жыл бұрын
Yes, totally. And at least there should be a warning that it’s not making backups. All this time I thought I had multiple backup versions of all my projects. Anyways thanks a lot! Love your videos!

Hi ! I don't get the difference to have or not to have the Cloud Pod just by sharing projects in your local network. For example, I wanted to access to my database from my 3 computers in my house local network but since it's not recommended to use a database in an external drive I think it's not the best solution and anyways I have to pay the cloud service for each database I want. Is that right or there is any solution ?

What about plugins? Will all collaborators have access to the plugins that are used in the project, as far as being able to edit parameters, make changes, add plugins, etc? I can't find the answer to this anywhere on the web.

@jordanbeaujour45292 жыл бұрын
Interesting.. Hey Chadwick I’m a little confused about the Dropbox because you still technically need point it to folder and then the remote editor still needs to to search for it so technically could I not just use my Personal Synology nas to host the proxies and sharing that with the remote editor ?
@CreativeVideoTips2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jordan, I don't have experience with a synology nas specifically so I can't give any guidance there. Maybe I should get one though? Anyways, yes you are still doing an inital pointing of the sync folder - but here's where I think it would be different - Say you have a project folder with all of your assets... camera originals, photos, music, sound effects all in one folder. You can have the cloud store or pod sync that entire folder and then blackmagic device can be told to only send over the low bandwidth proxies of the video files. On the other side of the country the assistant can point their blackmagic device, or just a dropbox sync app folder to the same location and it will only pull down the proxies and the rest of the needed assets - but skip the full res original video clips. You basically avoid needing to manage the moving or extracting of proxy media. Other than that, yes they would work pretty much the same. But that is my understanding of a primary benefit of this new device.
@jordanbeaujour45292 жыл бұрын
That’s also another thing, why would you have your colorist grade the proxies? Since they are so tiny the second you make any adjustment the image would fall apart right ? Or is the store/pod doing a proxies/original swapping during this ?
