At the beginning of the video, we imply that India is a small country. Obviously as many commenters have pointed out, this is nonsense: India is, by almost any measure, one of the largest countries in the world. What we were trying to communicate is that the final 3 alliances on this list are less substantial than the first 3; in other words, that India and US are t allies in the same way that, say, Japan and the US are. Apologies, these are errors we shouldn’t be making, and hope you nonetheless enjoyed the video!

3:55: I need to nitpick here. AUKUS specifically provides Australia with nuclear-_powered_ submarines, not nuclear-_armed_ submarines. Virginia-class subs are powered by a nuclear reactor, but they do not, as a rule, carry nuclear weapons. The advantage a nuclear-powered sub provides is the ability to stay at sea for far longer than a diesel-electric submarine, as nuclear reactors can run for years without refueling. It does not imply that said sub can wipe a city off the map.

It's not "pretty astonishing" that the Vietnamese have a favorable view of the US. Vietnam has a long history. The war with the US (and allies) was a blip in their history, but the Chinese not only invaded in 1979 but also occupied the country for about 1,000 years. That kind of history leaves a bigger impression of distrust.

@Ffourteen
@Ffourteen Жыл бұрын
And let's not forget that the Americans didn't invade a sovereign nation that then rallied around the flag to throw them out. There was a civil war between the regime in Hanoi, supported by the latest Soviet hardware, and the regime in Saigon, who begged the US to intervene to protect them from said Soviet hardware. That means that many Vietnamese at the time viewed the Americans as allies who were protecting them. And just because Hanoi won, doesn't mean they were the most popular. Their own soldiers understood that the regime viewed them as disposable. They had a saying that translates to 'born in the north to die in the south.' Hanoi proudly announced it would lose ten men for every American lost. The Hanoi regime also considered anyone working for the Saigon regime to be an enemy of the state. When you start executing school teachers and sanitation workers just because those are government jobs, it tends to turn people's stomachs. They were also executing priests and nuns because they saw Catholicism as a hold over of French colonialism. These factors caused many Vietnamese to flee and now live in the United States. As relations improved people were able to travel to visit family, either going back to Vietnam or from Vietnam to the United States. These exchanges created a familiarity between the Vietnamese and the Americans that doesn't exist with the Chinese. I'm not saying Americans didn't do terrible things in Vietnam, or trying to excuse anything they did by making a both sides argument. I just want to point out reasons why the actual population of Vietnam might have a much higher opinion of Americans than people less familiar with the Vietnam War might expect.

A lot of Western education doesn't teach the whole truth about things like Vietnam, WW2, etc. until you get to higher-level classes generally. It's not necessarily a higher-level class but for instance, until I think 8th grade I was taught that the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims peacefully survive the winter by showing them how to grow crops for instance. They left out that the Native Americans asked in return for some guns and some help to defeat a rival tribe or tribes, I can't remember. To most Americans, they think the Vietnam War was just as devastating to Vietnam as it was to the US, and it was worse for Vietnam than most people think I'd say, but the Vietnamese people already recognize that the current US is not the US that invaded them and that China is still very much a threat as it has been for thousands of years. A lot of Americans feel that the Vietnamese still hold a grudge against the US probably because they don't know how the Vietnamese fought the French, Japanese, French again, US, and then China for their own freedom and so to the uneducated, the US invasion is the worst conflict Vietnam faced apart from the Japanese invasion in WW2

As a Vietnamese, I'm a part of the populace that would hands down support the US in any conflict scenario in the region. I live abroad, too, so a lot of my Western friends found this fact to be quite surprising, given they only learned about our countries' troubled past. HOWEVER, our government is very unlikely going to listen to the people on foreign policy, so when push comes to shove, they'll ditch the friendly facade towards the Americans and try to appease China as much as possible. The reasoning goes beyond the similar systems and ideologies our regime has with Beijing, it's about "not being able to choose our neighbors, so we must learn to live peacefully with them."
@NotNXTr

I second this. While on the outside we may be more friendly to the US than China, when the times comes for Vietnamese government to pick a side, It's unlikely that they'll pick the one that's ideologically and geographically distant to them, even if it means having to compromise. Afterall, would the US come to rescue Vietnam when we actually gets into a conflict with China? highly unlikely. The US is already reluctant when it comes to defending Taiwan, let alone a communist state that has little tangible interest with the US other than being "an enemy of their enemy".

After Vietnam's prospects have been ruined for probably a century, they don't have a choice. "After the Vietnam war was ended in 1975, the major policy goal of the US has been to maximize repression and suffering in the countries that were devastated by our violence. The degree of the cruelty is quite astonishing. When the Mennonites tried to send pencils to Cambodia, the State Department tried to stop them. When Oxfam tried to send ten solar pumps, the reaction was the same. The same was true when religious groups tried to send shovels to Laos to dig up some of the unexploded shells left by American bombing. When India tried to send 100 water buffalo to Vietnam to replace the huge herds that were destroyed by the American attacks -- and remember, in this primitive country, water buffalo mean fertilizer, tractors, survival -- the United States threatened to cancel Food for Peace aid. (That's one Orwell would have appreciated.) No degree of cruelty is too great for Washington sadists. The educated classes know enough to look the other way. In order to bleed Vietnam, we've supported the Khmer Rouge indirectly through our allies, China and Thailand. The Cambodians have to pay with their blood so we can make sure there isn't any recovery in Vietnam. The Vietnamese have to be punished for having resisted US violence. Contrary to what virtually everyone -- left or right -- says, the United States achieved its major objectives in Indochina. Vietnam was demolished. There's no danger that successful development there will provide a model for other nations in the region. Of course, it wasn't a total victory for the US. Our larger goal was to reincorporate Indochina into the US-dominated global system, and that has not yet been achieved. But our basic goal -- the crucial one, the one that really counted -- was to destroy the virus, and we did achieve that." (If you are wondering what "the virus" referred to above means, is: "to end any hope of economic development and social reform" "that might have infected other countries in the region and eroded the American system of exploitation and robbery." So Vietnam had to be smashed because allowing it to develop with a socialist system would prevent US capitalists from owning most of the country and hence extracting most of their wealth (which is why most countries aren't developing). Other countries in the region would then use use Vietnam's successful development as an example to develop their selves). As Smedley D. Butler states in his speeches and book, "War is a Racket". Aka, your capitalists are using your tax money to fund these "adventures", as well as working class lives (as marines and etc) to make their selves ever more rich.

The prob with the West is, you think in the 21st century you can play the cold War game of coming to tell others "hate the dude for me". That, I promise you, won't work. First check your own mistakes in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yugoslavia and find out what the world thinks of you. For instance, why countries like India and Indonesia refused to sabction Russia? Literally, the only reason nations agree to the one China policy is economics. Legally, Taiwan is the successor state of the RoC. The CCP are a insurgent group that won their civil war, and occupied the mainland. Had the CCP been the ones fleeing to Taiwan, we’d be dealing with a nationalist China and a communist Taiwan. And I’m fairly certain a mainland Republic of China would be globally accepted, and probably have its own sphere of influence with Asian nations that don’t intend to spread military influence in international waters. Like realistically, an invasion of China in the modern age is highly improbable. To many people, too many resources. And they have defensive advantage by being an ocean away and having the resources it has. But their insistence in trying to invade Taiwan despite the risk of negatively impacting the global economy shows they’re obviously not set on merely being defensive against the US Countries need to get themselves away from Chinese manufacturing, because they’re only gonna threaten to ruin other nations economies if they strongly oppose Chinese war plans against Taiwan

@@jtgd China knows they have 10-15 years max before their demographics fully collapse and they have no more money for military. If they keep military spending on the up and up half their population will die of starvation and old age, since retired age people will have the majority, and the few younger people that exist will have to spend their economic production taking care of said aged population. A country on the precipice of that demographics mountain, a lower birth rate than South Korea, and a population around 1.4 billion, makes me seriously worry about the Great Leap Forward 2.0 This time, only the famine.

Not really. If you read it carefully, ANZUS does not commit American troops to Australia’s defence like to any other US treaty ally besides the Philippines, and vice versa. Japan, South Korea and NATO all have collective defence treaties. (The famous “An attack on one is an attack on all”) If one party is attacked, the US HAS to commit troops. ANZUS, and the US-Philippines treaty which is nearly worded identically, only states that a party can consult another party if attacked. The other party doesn’t have to act on it. The could just send military/political aid and still fulfil their treaty obligations. This means that if Australia is attacked, the US could just sit and watch and do nothing about it if they wanted to. Of course they could also interpret it as sending in troops but there is still ambiguity that can be exploited.

To be fair, I don't know if outside these three (Australia, Japan, South Korea), the others do not even want to upset China. Vietnam is unlikely to join the US-led alliance. The VCP prioritised their relations with China (even though they did fight a war in 1979 against China, in addition to even more wars from ancient time). Geopolitical reasons may prevent such thing from ever being materialised. India is more likely, but depend on circumstances. India's relations with China are poor but there is a mutual interdependence between the two. India also lacks trusts on the United States and its allies. Philippines are the most likely to be on American side, but to which extent is questionable. The Philippines have bitter past with the Americans and they are also deeply reliant on China (although they have tensions regarding SCS). Some other nations like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are not exactly fond of joining such an alliance. Then, counting the Central Asian nations, they also dislike China but geopolitics deny these countries their abilities to become flexible. In the end, all lies in the dust, waiting for a phoenix moment to rise.

Still India spends more on defence spending than any other "major country" on the list , only one with a nuclear arsenal and with a nuclear triad , only one with a blue water navy , an airforce which was ranked better than that of the chinese last year and the largest standing army in the entire world. Still you think it's not a major country than I don't get how any other country is a major country.

India still has the 5th largest economy nominally, 3rd largest in PPP terms and the 3rd largest military budget. A lot of Indians oversell India's capabilities...but it's definitely not small. A regional power still but an important player nonetheless.
@OrionTails
@OrionTails Жыл бұрын
@@acrux4556 to be fair, defence spending and military strength doesn't really contribute much to its influence outside of its local sphere of influence, and nuclear weapons aren't helping either to reinforce said influence. Also, I doubt the source stating that India's air force can outperform China's, it's really hard to believe that a country with a long history of copying Soviet and Russian weaponry and reselling them for cheap and is by far the most industrialized nation as of now can be outclassed by an upcoming power. With that said, I don't think it's right for India to be considered as a “small nation” by any metric. It has an impressive economic growth over the past two decades and an equally impressive potential for future growth. It's just not there yet.

@@acrux4556 "only one with a blue water navy" Kekw. Imagine saying this while the Brits are on the list. India has about 100,000 total tonnage of replenishment ships (bought from other countries) while the Royal Fleet Auxiliary has about 300,000 tonnes of replenishment ships. Japan has about the same as India at 95,000 tonnes of replenishment ships btw. The focus on replenishment ships because blue water navy is not specifically about combat firepower, but more global reach.

It's really not the EDCA that holds the Philippines and the US alliance together. The EDCA exists cause there is an official Mutual Defense Treaty between the US and the Philippines which has existed since 1951. Without that treaty there would be no EDCA. To say that EDCA is the alliance is wrong. EDCA allows the alliance to work but it is not the alliance.

Yep but it remains to be seen. Besides talks nobody really knows what would happen in such scenarios. If the US cannot deploy to Ukraine, a white country, where's the guarantee it will go to the Philippines? Second, don't try to make us believe the majority of Filipinos even want those bases. In case a war breaks out with China, there US a chance a hood number of Filipinos defect to China. So such a war would create opposing sides in the Philippines itself and it would not be a walk in the woods for the US either.

To divide the nations as Major and Minor completely undermines the efforts of the so called “smaller” nations as to their fears and what those nations are doing to combat the rising threat of China. For example: Nothing about India’s military is small Nothing about Vietnams tenacity and courage is small And Nothing about the Philippines being the oldest and longest US ally in the region is small. Furthermore there are some mistakes made in this video and I highly suggest that the editors research more and double check on topics, before posting the videos to YT.

USA and UK share military bases e.g. RAF Lakenheath, RAF bases at Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Diego Garcia (British Indian Ocean Territory)... Also their defence industries sell each other weapons and have jointly developed technologies like the F35 which was a collaboration between Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems. UK and USA are members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance....

It was literally not discussed and made a decision in 1 day, cost $250 billion and is gonna be completed by 2050. We could have had more submarines if we had the French built it and be completed by 2030s. Plus these submarines would make us more reliant on the US and have us be a proxy in their war to stop China's growth.
