Every version of Clank! - A Buyer's Guide

With nearly a dozen games now available in the Clank! series, it can be overwhelming to choose between its various versions. So, let's take a look at each game in the Clank! line, to help you find the version that’s the best fit. This is Pair Of Dice Paradise’s Clank Buyer’s Guide!
The Clank series can be divided into three categories: original Clank, which has a fantasy theme. Clank In Space, which introduces a sci-fi setting. And Clank Legacy, a legacy version of the game which will evolve into a unique experience, while also incorporating the characters from Acquisitions Incorporated, an online series of podcasts, live shows, and comics.
We’ll take a look at each of the different games and expansions in this series, excluding the various promo cards that are available.

The first game published in the Clank line was Clank! A Deck Building Adventure. This edition introduces the core concepts that appear in each subsequent version. For example, Clank! is a deck-building game, in which every player has their own deck, which they will customize as the game progresses. Most cards will generate resources, such as Skill (which is used to acquire new cards), Swords (which are used to fight the monsters that infest the dungeon) and Boots (which are used to move around the board).
No matter which cards players add to their deck, their objective remains the same: retrieve an Artifact and then escape the dungeon with it, picking up as many additional points as possible along the way. But, escape may be easier said than done, because every noise they make (referred to as “Clank”) draws the attention of the dragon, and each artifact stolen increases its rage. Players will need to balance acquiring plunder with making their way back out of the labyrinth to safety, because the only way to enjoy your ill-gotten treasure is to make it out of the dungeon depths alive!
In 2017, Clank In Space, this time featuring a sci-fi setting, was released, and introduced the most substantial revisions to the Clank lineup up to that point.Clank In Space is, comparatively, a bit more complex than Clank Adventures series, perhaps making it a better fit for players who already have some experience with the game. The core concepts are still present: players build a customized deck of cards throughout the course of the game, which will be used to move through the spaceship, attack things, acquire new cards, and, of course, make noise to attract the attention of the boss monster, this time played by the evil Lord Eradikus, because dragons have not yet developed interstellar warp-drive technology.
This version includes a modular board (allowing several different board configurations) various factions for the cards you accumulate (introducing synergies that can be taken advantage of by comboing certain cards together), data port checkpoints that players will need to hack in order to progress deeper into the ship, power crystals (which can be used to boost certain effects), teleporters, a hyperlift, and a new wrinkle in getting off the ship alive - in the form of single-use escape pods, which are first come, first serve. Clank In Space retains enough ties to the original to feel familiar, but adds enough new elements to keep things interesting for seasoned players.
The third category of games in the Clank line are based on the Acquisitions Incorporated, a podcast following the misadventures of a Dungeon & Dragons campaign, which eventually expanded to include live shows, comics, too. In this version of the game, players found their own franchise of the legendary adventuring company Acquisitions Incorporated, and shepherd their fledgling treasure-hunters towards immortal corporate glory over the course of a campaign. The game’s board, cards, and rulebook evolve as the games progress, ultimately creating a unique, custom adventure.

Clank! Is great! I'd also recommend Quest for El Dorado. It's not as goofy or as tense as Clank!, but it's pleasantly simple, and still has some interesting decision-making with the deck-building and movement.

I own Clank! In Space… never played Clank! Original and now I own the Legacy game Acquisition Incorporated… And I must say that, to me, the Legacy one is the better version of Clank. My kids and I are almost done with the campain. We play a session or two each weekend and progress through the story and add components to the game itself… or more (I won't spoil anything about the "DO NOT OPEN ENVELOPPE" or anything else). And this Christmas, I'm giving the original Clank game to a friend so I will be able to compare the 3 main versions :)

Well, the best answer I can give to that question is, "it depends". I think the original Clank is an excellent game to introduce people to deck-building concepts, and moving across the board doesn't add too much complexity. Clank In Space increases the complexity just a little bit. So, I wouldn't recommend using that version as a gateway game - I'd save it for once the players are a bit more experienced with deck-building and modern gaming concepts. I'd think that Clank Legacy is a more specific taste - if the players don't like legacy games, then I doubt they would appreciate the mechanisms that Clank Legacy introduces. So, I think it will depend on the player's familiarity and comfort level with current tabletop games, and the complexity of the experience that they want to have. I hope this helps!

I've only played Sunken Treasures, and I thought the new cards were the best part (discard synergies are fun), but you didn't exactly have time to go through all of the cards and other details in each expansion.

@Shelby: My favorite two expansions are currently the Apocalypse expansion for Clank In Space, and the Ape Lords expansion for classic Clank. I like the additional ways the black cubes are used in the Apocalypse expansion, and the rotating spaces & set collection used in the Ape Lords expansion. Those are my two top recommendations. I hope this helps! :)

I still have a question though. If I get the Legacy version and finish the campain, can I mix it with Mummy's Curse and Sunken Tresors or do I have to buy the original Clank! before I get those expansions?

That is a good question. I would say those expansions could be combined with the Legacy version. I think some of the treasures may be slightly different, and there will be a different pool of cards. But no changes so drastic that the expansions would be broken or unplayable. (Of course, this is just my opinion, and I've been known to be a fan of a bit of chaos in my games.)

Hey Chaz, great video and loved how you broke down the different versions. I just recently got into board games and I want to get my 8 year old daughter into them too, do you think the original Clank! would be good for her? or would that be too complex for a kid, who is also getting into board games.

So I bought Legacy and it be my only copy of Clank I played Clank before but not the Legacy. I heard it's like having Clank base game and two expansions

I would say it's more than that because each and every game of the story lets you add more stuff into the game. I would compare it to having mini expansions each time you play. Even the two sided board makes your adventures refreshing during the campain.

Yes. It is called the Adventuring Party. It also gives character roles so each player has special powers. But you don’t have to play with the character cards.

I really like the Schemes and additional uses for the black cubes that the Apocalypse expansion in the Space line adds. It's the Space expansion I prefer. I hope this helps!
