Yep. As much as many proponents want to claim Sambo as a unique art a good 2/3 if not more is identical to the Judo it comes from, even down to many of the rules used in competitions. Just because they allow leg locks and have an extra grip on the shoulders of the jacket/kurtka (Sambo's gi) does not make it some new fresh faced art. A fun ruleset sure, but wholly unique? No.

Not entirely accurate. American folk style is catch wresting without submissions, not freestyle. In both catch wrestling and American folk style the wrestlers remain on the ground after a takedown until the end of a period or until there is a pin (or a submission in a catch match), or if the downed wrestler escapes to their feet. You only have a few seconds to score on the ground after a takedown in Freestyle and Greco until the ref resets the wrestlers in neutral.
@xxFairestxx
@xxFairestxx 2 ай бұрын
I’m a CACC coach for Snakepit USA. This is incorrect. Due to the lack of submissions, many of the positions, transitions, rides, and pins changed because the threat of a submission is not present. Freestyle developed augmented technique systems that were more efficient under the rule set. However, add back in the submissions and it’s a different game entirely. I get freestyle wrestlers in my class all the time, all various backgrounds. They may have the wrestling mentality, but teaching them submission techniques does not make them Catch wrestlers.

Maybe for part 2? There is also Gulat Benjang, literally means Benjang Wrestling, which originated from Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. It's basically shirtless wrestling with few Judo rules, but the wrestler who does a takedown without following the opponent to the ground scores you more point than doing a takedown with you following to the ground. You must also not expose your shoulders to the sky or the ceiling, so techniques like suplex and gutwrench would give the opponent point instead of the one doing the technique. One other thing that makes Benjang Wrestling unique is that it is also accompanied by Sundanese drum plays.

JG Chambers did not "originate" Catch wrestling, he merely was one of the first big promoters of it for entertainment purposes. Forms of aggressive submission based grappling methods in Europe can be found as far back as Roman era to centuries later and closer to England through the history of the Normans.

The Normans didn't bring any submission wrestling styles to England. Catch is a native art developed in England hundreds of years after the Normans ceased to exist.

@@Matt_Alaric No. The name "catch wrestling" and it's competitive rulesets are modern but it's technical methodology is based off of historical trade of the various peoples which includes the Normans.

@@rafaelcarrera9436 No, catch is just short for "catch as catch can" which evolved in NW England hundreds of years after the Normans ceased to exist. There is no historical evidence backing your claim that it was imported by the Normans at all.

Catch Wrestling, Catch As Catch Can, Hook Wrestling, Old English Shootwrestling, yes it has many names but they all are within the last 150 or so years which I all I was referring to - that these are more modern labels but the construction of this art goes much further back. As my the issue of the Normans, no where did I suggest they created it, only, like many peoples before and since have added to it's history through cultural exchange. The references for this can be found in numerous books referencing their invasions and subsequent establishments of schools, churches, monasteries etc. The wrestling I specifically made mention of is due to what I found interesting in the few books I could find that included writings of their military culture was how grappling was both combative and recreational. All the best in your health and training.

I would say the exclusion of Judo but inclusion ofSambo is justified due to it's influence of different traditional slavic wrestling styles. Judo's origin as the hand combat system organized from a collection of traditional/regional ju jitsu techniques. In sambo the Gi is a feature, in Judo the Gi is the medium- that's the difference imo.

You actually got to train with an ancient Roman.....that's wild! I really thought that they had gone extinct. Seriously now: yeah shuai jiao is pretty much the staple base for many kung-fu systems, along with chin-na and bargi boxing. There's a lot of Asian communities in Latin America and there are many family styles among them which are kept secretly. Until recently there was little mention of them, but with martial arts popularity they are starting to come out.
