A little contex here: LUTA LIVRE IS THE PRECURSOR OF MMA. When the Grecie family perfected what we know as Brazilian JiuJitsu, they used the "dirty" moves from Luta Livre. Hélio Grecie, the old man, said that at a TV interview decades ago. The fact is that the Grecies' idea of going out and figthing against different stiles, to show wich one was the best, led to the creation of "Vale-tudo" (Anything goes) competition, were they pitted theyr Brazilian JiuJitsu against any other stile. But Luta Livre wrestlers were already doing it before, even fighting the Grecies very ofthen, from wich they developed the idea. The Vale-tudo's rules that were agreed upon were only those identical for every martial art involved, PRETTY MUCH NONE... Later, after the idea had caugth on with the general audience, they created specific rules to reduce the number of grave injuries, and renamed the sport as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

As an Alabamian, I am proud to see rough and tumble on the list, although I think people down where I’m from called it Scuffling. Gouging was also popular in Alabama before 1900, you mention it here but it involved trying to pluck out the eye of your opponent. Good life skill to know. :) Dambe looks awesome.

Sir, as a proud, native son of the great Commonwealth of Kentucky, I scoff in derision at your assertion regarding the so-called popularity of gouging in Alabama. Only in Kentucky, among the Thoroughbreds and bluegrass festooned meadows, did the righteous and honorable tradition, nay I say art form, of groin kicking, backshooting, biting, and eye-gouging rise to its highest form of nobility among gentry and commoner alike. My great granddaddy, Sam, used to keep his thumbnail filed to a point should the occasion call for a bit of gouging upon some scurrilous cur suddenly arise. 😀😀🐎🐎🧐🧐👎👎

There's deeper levels, but at its core, it is street fighting. It can be considered true MMA. Definitely not a sport. I knew a guy who taught some basics, but below a certain level it's just basic street fighting. Above a certain level is absolutely nuts. Guy could knock me over, grab my balls, and put me into a headlock that threatened a breakage. Breakout of the headlock, and I'm castrated; protect my balls and I die.

Catch Wrestling pretty much lived on through emigrating to south America by Brasil and became Luta Livre which has an interesting history of rivalry with the Gracie family and BJJ. Today the mat wrestling and leg locks of LL have pretty much blended with the positioning, posturing and upper body submission structures of BJJ to form what is pretty much the meta of grappling, especially no-gi.

@rafaelcarrera9436
@rafaelcarrera9436 Ай бұрын
@@rondoiron6907 Strong/Hard style developed almost solely for entertainment/puroresu purposes with some lineages (eg. shooto/shootfighting, Submission Arts Wrestling) being more true to the combative wrestling introduced by Karl Gotch. The old Pancrase matches from the 90s were a great place to watch this kind of fighting back in the day. The problem with the submission game in Japan was that due to the submissions themselves being so popular that they were prioritized to the near exclusion of wrestling fundamentals. This lead to many exciting hold for hold matches but due to the shallow training of wrestling the grapplers of this style eventually found themselves easy prey for BJJ practitioners as they had little to no clinch or takedown skills other than basic shots, and their pinning and mat wrestling were non existent. Such examples of this were Minoru Suzuki and Ken Shamrock who both were considered monsters in the ring but once pitted against BJJ their lack of skills of mat control were exposed and their status as legendary grapplers fell hard.

I belong to the Igorot tribe here in the mountains of Cordillera of the Northern Philippines. We have a martial arts called "daban" which means fight. No rules, no specific method and there are no official documented details about it. Men were chosen among the most muscular and fit ones. It was also focused mainly in conditioning with the use of force manual labor implemented by tribal leaders among men, tug of was, arm wrestling and etc. It was used during tribal wars between different Igorot subtribes. Weapons and empty hands were considered under the umbrella of "daban". Headhunting where one beheads his enemy with the use of jungle bolo or "gaman" headhunting axe is considered "daban". The empty hand technique looks like a combination of free style wrestling, rough and tumble style and modern street fighting style. It is one of the reasons why the Spaniards were not able to conquer the region. Modern Filipino martial artists dismiss it as a martial art because it was solely used for survival. Unfortunately, us Igorots in the modern era do not practice it anymore since headhunting and tribal wars were outlawed later in the 60's and some areas of the Cordillera only showcase it in festivals and special celebrations through exhibition fights and shows as part of the program.

When someone is defeated that is a round. Best two out of three.

No, this is something only a crack head would say. You know nothing of the way. if truly a test, then let it be on the street, and to the death. Not your fluff and crack induced coma.

Ive been investigating the rare martial art bakom(bah-comb) strangest part is that i never heard anybody talk about bakom when i lived in peru for 6 years in Lima, then i investigated and it is illegal to learn or practice. Love the accuracy but he butchered the speaking 🤣🤣

Fun fact about Angampora: This martial art is mainly used for war, while self defence is an aspect of Angampora, it is mostly used to kill the attacker. A master of this art can easily, paralyze temporarily/permanently, or simply kill the opponent in a matter of seconds. There is also an entire sub-genre fully dedicated to this, called "Maru kalaawa" or the art of death. Another fun fact: During the start, and the middle of britain's colonization efforts, generals used to give explicit orders to their troops so seek out "well built" males and females from a suspected villages to be shot-on-sight as Angampora practisioners were so good at ambushing and smoking entire convoys of british troops.
