When I was 15, I was the Michigan and Ohio State freestyle champ. Tried folksyle for the 1st time (without fully understanding the rules) and lost in the finals to the folkstyle champ. He talked smack and took an L in the fist fight. Doesn't always work but I agree, folkstyle transitions best to mma!

I noticed this when Romero kept getting double legged by Brunson and he is an Olympic medalist wrestler. Then it after thinking about it I realized he didn't do any NCAA wrestling which is why Askren and Lesner are great at take downs. Cormier although wrestled in the Olympics it seemed like he was better in folkstyle where he only lost to Cael Sanderson

Folk style teaches you how to ride and control and keep guys down. It also teaches you how to get up quickly and do technical ground control. Folkstyle with some greco is a beast combo for mma.

The ability that is underestimated the most in folk style is the ability to get up. You know why watching Dominick Cruz, TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrant fight each other is awesome? Its because every time one gets a take down the other one gets right back up to their feet. Dominick was a solid college wrestler that has only improved since, Cody was a high school state champion, and TJ wrestled for Cal State Fullerton which is high level. So their wrestling is pretty close to even.

speak the truth chael.. i wrestled in high school and college and I swear when I started even training jujitsu the explosiveness associated with collegiate wrestling it really helped me with powering into transitions. I can see why it's so useful in MMA its brutal in a fight too most people don't know how to defend a anaconda with fists.I just hope the Olympic keeps wrestling .

I have very very rudimentary wrestling experience, about 2 years. The vast majority of that experience was in freestyle and Greco-Roman. However, given that limited experience the type of wrestling that has always stuck with me from a fundamental standpoint has been folkstyle. It is the style I use to teach my kids self defense concepts.

Alo Oso Where people make the mistake about St Pierre is they say he isn't good at something it's simply not true. Chael himself has said on numerous occasions he was beaten by George when they went up against each other and he was shocked & impressed with him. This is been repeated by Rashad Evans former college champ & Dan Henderson many others. He was offered to wrestle for Canadian national team in Olympics but he couldn't because of his UFC commitments. He trains with the best international wrestlers all the time especially from Russia this is not a secret. Canadian coach is former Russian Olympic Gold Medalist. My point is that he is example that he didn't specialize in one style and became really really good at it.

He wrestles with Canadian national team all the time was asked to represent the Olympic team but couldn't because of his UFC commitments as champ. Freestyle allows grips just about anywhere as well as allowing trips, to the best of my knowledge. Grecco only permits grips above the waist. Never wrestled or studied it seriously but thats what Ive gleaned from spectating it.

The rules dictate the techniques and training; scoring differs. Folk style awards control while international styles award high amplitude throws. Also the allowed techniques differ. In Folk Style you can do techniques that hurt but not injure such as the wrestler's guillotine, while in international styles these aren't allowed. Also scoring is different. An international pin is 1 second while folk is 2 to 3 seconds. Ride time is awarded in folk. Par Terre generally gets stood back up like judo in the international styles, so they generally don't learn ground control instead they learn how to roll people over, because they are awarded for instances of back exposure while in folk back exposure is awarded by a 2 to 5 seconds of exposure, in other words you must hold and control it not just roll around. In international wrestling you can slam while in folk you can only takedown with control; you literally must be able to stop the moment is the referee says stop, which you can't do at the height of the arc in any suplex. International rules throws are better for fights, but the handles, controls, takedowns, and pins from folkstyle are better if you aren't trying to injure another in a fight, and if you are trying to injure them then they do allow you to control a person to do much damage if you know submissions and strikes; early ground and pound is an example of it, because the ground fight allows knees and elbows while you have a person tied and held immobile, which aren't allowed in current rules.

I have a kid that keeps surprising everyone around here. I put him in Gracie BJJ up here in Idaho and he has been blasting through stripes and belts. He decides he wants to wrestle too and without cutting an ounce has been mowing over other teens with years of experience, so I find myself going "ok, what's next?". At this point, I'd give my brothers left nut, (mine are priceless), to sit down and have a conversation with Chael about direction for the kid.

Some people prefer a couple different gyms and some people go to a MMA gym. Does training kickboxing and BJJ make the most sense or does training "MMA" make the most sense? Should I keep the kid in school wrestling or should I look into club? Are there good "camps" that I can send him to where he can get an idea of what being a full-time fighter would be? There are a ton of different directions and I trust Chaels opinion on the subject more than most as he's a very cerebral athlete like my son.

I wrestled a tournament in the US, we were supposed to wrestle freestyle but the US teams said we had to wrestle folkstyle and we had never heard of folkstyle. We were destroyed and our coaches filed a grievance and all day 1 results were thrown out. We wrestled freestyle, I was 95kg and I shot in and picked up my opponent and he screamed. I did a 5pt salto and after that the US team lost every match but 1. What I learned is, if you are trained in 1 and not in another you probably will lose if you wrestled the other style.

Randy couture was a greco roman guy and he is a 4 time champion ( one of the titles he lost was via bullshit eyepoke by belfort so we can't really count that.

Romero did use his wrestling against Whittaker in the first fight but Weidman actually took him down twice with single legs and then got kneed. Also Brunson double legged Romero a few times and then Romero landed a huge punch and knocked Brunson out. I think Romero is a better wrestler then most but you can see that him not having any NCAA wrestling experience hurts him a little bit when it comes to getting take downs and defending take downs.

jacob harris Great question. Collegiate (US folk style) focuses on takedowns and controlling the opponent on the mat. It teaches dominant positioning. Freestyle and Greco both emphasize back exposure more than control. Freestyle (similar to US folk style) allows lower and upper body attacks. Greco-Roman only allows upper body attacks such as throws. Finally, both freestyle and Greco reward high altitude throws.

The short answer is a qualified yes. IJF judo allows only upper body grips plus the trips (ashi waza) and the pins and submissions. Kosen rules judo is like the folkstyle equivalent of judo. Leg grabs are allowed, and there is more time on the ground to secure a pin or submission.

Yes, college matches are a minute longer though and you can earn a point for every minute of top control, which isn't a thing in high school wrestling. There's also more emphasis on wrestling the edge of the mat, scoring before going out of bounds/ keeping from being scored on before out of bounds, which isn't really taught to high schools kids. Although you might see it in wrestling powerhouse states like Ohio and Pennsylvania.
