The biggest issue with the game as a whole was the tome expansion idea to expand the five existing worlds instead of just having nine regular and more compact worlds like in the original Banjo-Kazooie. These worlds instead are more far reaching and barren like Tooie and the game didn't hold my interest enough for me to finish it as a consequence. I liked the first world the best; probably because the novelty of playing a classic styled 3D platformer had not worn off yet.

That's one of the reasons why I prefer to play through Banjo-Kazooie every few years before I buy Yooka Laylee. On the other hand, the worlds are not as loving as in Banjo-Kazooie.

For me it would be: 1. Moodymaze Marsh- I think I'm one of those few odd people that like water levels. Really love the theme. Something about derelict industry coinciding with swampland and traversing through submerged structures. Being a little bit spooky helped as well. 2. Tribalstack Tropics- is such a strong first level. Great use of vertical space. Challenges felt the best here. 3. Galleon Galaxy- The neon colors though! Really vibed here. Transformation added the most to exploring that level. 4. Glitterglaze Glacier- It's a very pretty level but I agree it is missing something. 5. Capital Cashino- I probably should give this one another chance, but out of all the worlds this is the one I got lost the most in. Nothing really held my attention that long; probably should have held off expanding it first before visiting it

8 smaller world's really would have been better than 5 huge ones. I just get lost so often. I'd say YL is on a par with DK64 and Banjo Tooie, but not BK

Agreed, bigger isn't always better!

I agree that YL is on par with Banjo-Tooie and not nearly as enthralling as Banjo-Kazooie. DK64, while having larger levels, also had a lot more variety in environments and structures, challenges and activities that were more engaging, and better boss fights. So I would put that one somewhere in between Kazooie and the other two games, but closer to Kazooie. DK64 worlds were large but much better laid out than YL.
@IcarianX2 жыл бұрын
@@shiningphantasy1393 That's fair. I think most people would agree that BK is best anyway and all the others have world's that are too large and not as much fun to explore to varying degrees. But YL is in the same quality ballpark as BT and DK64

My ranking: 5: Moodymaze Marsh-As you say, quite a few of the missions were kinda forgettable. Didn't really care for the aesthetic either. Though I do think the boss fight was cool 4: Galleon Galaxy: Similar to above but sliding down the tubes was great fun 3: Glitterglaze Glacier: I really enjoyed this world, in particular the side scrolling missions in the Icymetric palace. Boss was excellent as well. The music and atmosphere was great too. You're right though it is too large and dearth. 2: Capital Cashino: I couldn't wait to play this level from the very beginning, and it didn't disappoint. In fact the overall atmosphere was even better than I imagined. I loved fighting inept, the best boss I the game I personally think a d the casino runner bonus round was awesome too. One or two missions were a tad dull though (the golf ball one for example) 1: Tribalstack tropics. The perfect opening world and the one I feel the developers put the most effort into. Excellent theming, variety, music, missions and more. The boss fight sucked though even if you know'the trick' I still think it's horrible and dull. Overall I felt all worlds had their merit. The overworld was super cool too. Overall I had a blast with this game and would definitely recommend it. Thanks for the ranking enjoyed watching muchly and glad to see this vastly underrated game getting some much deserved love.....

Interesting level ranking of Yooka-Laylee, considering it only had 5 levels. I haven’t played the game yet, but I’ll take what you said into consideration when I get around to playing it. I’m a huge fan of platformer games as I grew up with them, and ones I have a soft spot for, and hold dear to my heart. I sure hope they make another Yooka-Laylee game. Are you also planning to rank the levels of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair?

I think one problem is they start with basically the same themes as Banjo-Kazooie. Tribalstack is just Mayahem Temple and Mumbo's Mountain. Glitterglaze is Freezeezy Peak without christmas, or Hailfire Peaks ice side. Moodymaze combines Bubblegloop Swamp with Mad Monster Mansion, though i think it's still more original since it's a combination of two very different themes.

I loved this game when it came out and 100%ed it as quick as I could. Everyone here has some excellent points which I do agree with, particularly the ones about it being better if the game had 8 or 9 smaller levels instead of five big expandable ones. I think my biggest disappointment though is they've really not done anything with them since they released that platformer game. I'm sure it's good, I still need to get around to paying it and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but I just hoped we'd see some more honest to goodness 3d collect-a-thon's by now, or at least a few DLC levels for the original Yooka game.

I agree and its something I could have been more critical about when talking about Capital Cashino in particular. Even though I still appreciate that it actually has easily distinguishable landmarks, I have no idea why there is so much space between each of them. It really exposes the downside of including a stamina meter among other things.

That's one thing I think Banjo Tooie excelled at: connecting the worlds. People seem impatient with the back tracking (and frankly I never liked Glitter Gulch Mine that much), but it was neat to see something from one world change to the other.

That's why it doesn't really make sense when people say YL is the same as BT. BT very clearly has so much more care put into it, to the point where the big levels aren't as much of an issue. @AdamTheGameBoy Жыл бұрын
I would describe the big problem with the levels being the worlds are too big and samey enough to be easy to get lost in. I remember there was one nook in Tribalstack Tropics I always struggled to find when I needed to go there and as the worlds got bigger, there were more of those... and there's also not much to be placed in the worlds. People talk crap on DK64, but the problem wasn't the number of collectables, it was that you had to be a certain character out of 5 to collect them. Yooka-Laylee streamlined away all the consumables like eggs and feathers. Quills have to carry filling the level; the remaining things to collect are so scarce - a play coin, a molycule and the upgrades unless I'm forgetting something. The health upgrade used to be multiple honey comb pieces and they streamlined that away. Even if they dropped the expansion and doubled the worlds, they all still would be light on things to collect. Moodymaze Marsh was the biggest let down because spooky levels are my kind of thing, but Glitterglaze was the worst. How do you even make a snow level that bad and tedious?!
@MrDrBoi Жыл бұрын
Agreed, when I'm playing a collect-a-thon I want to be constantly rewarded, and the combination of less collectibles and bigger worlds doesn't really provide that.

While i hear many people saying they want 9 worlds just like in Kazooie, i don't think that's necessary. Tooie has 8 worlds and DK64 has 7, and i am satisfied with both. I really think even just adding one single world as DLC (i think they promised big post-launch content in the Kickstarter campaign) would do a lot, bringing the total to 6.
@MrDrBoi Жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't think 9 is necessarily a magic number or anything, but I'd agree that 6 or maybe 7 should be the minimum for this style of game.

If you imagine Yooka-Laylee as a game that came out during the late 90s, during your childhood on the N64, and have you nostalgia for it like Banjo-Kazooie, then suddenly it feels like an amazing game, flaws and all. When you compare it to the standards of modern gaming, it’s lacking in many quality of life areas and suffers from the some of the same mistakes these developers had already made in the past with Banjo-Tooie and DK64. It still stands strong among Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie and DK64 IMO.

Posted as a separate comment as I imagine it may well be hugely unpopular, but personally (takes deep breath.........)..... .....As a big fan of the original (whilst not being blind to it's faults) I didn't care for the impossible lair, not one bit, not at all. I'd struggle to invent a way to make a more frustrating game than not being able to access the actual levels, which are clearly fun, due to an insanely bloated and largely boring overworld, coupled with having such a low jump that areas that should obviously be accessible to you are not simply because you can only jump about 2 feet in the air. The only thing I could think to make it worse is to remove the ability to double jump throughout the whole game....Oh hang on, they did....

Capital Cashino: The Fact that Capital B is the Banker makes it more enjoyable when Laylee is talking amack about him. I liked how you needed Cashino Coins to get thze Pagies, which make for the best Parts of this Game. But there are Parts that drag this World down into a Middle Spot like the Boss and the Rextro Minigame. Even Laylee agrees the Rextro Minigame in this World is bad (B-Tier) 4. Glitterglaze Glacier: The Highlights were the Castle, the Atmosphere and that one Cave. Everyone else was from fine to semi-decent. (B-Tier) 5. Moodymaze Marsh: There are some fun Parts like the Mission where you do Platforming while rolling, the Boss was good, but mostly everything else was just really not my Cup of Tea. And this being a Water-Themed Level is mostly a Lie since most the Water is a Swamp. Not bad but just bland (c-Tier)
