I have played the guitar for most of my life casually. In a band as a teenager but life happened and left it alone for a long time. Now that i'm retired, and have a beautiful Strat, Les Paul, and a Hot Rod Deville, i wanted to get back into playing and enjoying it. I was stuck due to lack of fretboard knowledge. I watched a lot of videos showing how to play different songs, but the songs were all i knew. Your approach showing how chords and shapes work together up and down the neck have unlocked a whole new world for me. I have advanced more in 2 weeks with you than years of learning songs. Thank you so much for such a simple method to get better, and know more about theory and fretboard management. My fingers are sore now since you have inspired me to pick up my guitars everyday for a few hours.

Oh , one more thing here comment wise , I just watched a mini documentary about the band “ Kansas “ and in the video it was mentioned that the guitar melody for “ Dust in the wind “ was inspired by a finger picking exercise that one member was doing & his wife told him that he needed to share that with the rest of the group as she was sure it had the initial makings of something huge song -wise . You just never know Randy ….😉

Rusty thanks for your insights. A bit too basic for me and I'm wondering if you could show us some speed lead break tricks here-and-there? Like yourself I mix a lot of slow and medium speed stuff with just SOME speed stuff. But that's because I often can't get my head around the high speed tricks, not because I want to be stuck in the slower lanes. Other teachers show us "shreds" but they're not suitable for the way I play. Sorry no bucks in it because I'm in another country (Australia). We do like your guitars though.

Thanks Rusty this in opened my mind to new idea’s! Did you see my earlier request for a lesson on some fingering tricks and techniques to better facilitate playing lead lines and solo’s? To clarify, some players play everything using the index and ring finger - others use other combinations to facilitate their lead playing - I don’t see many lessons explaining these choices or the advantages/disadvantages of each… I’m sure there are other fingerings used to best facilitate playing particular runs and/or licks. Would really appreciate some lessons addressing this subject.

Hey Kevin, you’re right I don’t talk about that much in my lessons. Mostly players choose what fingers they use because it’s what’s comfortable for them. And the other factor is where you are headed to next on the fretboard. Honestly you don’t want to be thinking about what fingers to use, you want to use the fingering that’s comfortable. Dude… you just gave me that missing piece that unlocked the final piece of the fretboard. I have been learning minor and major modes etc for a year, learning to improvise with major and minor etc. i knew the notes of the e strings and the A and a lot of the B, I knew the different triad shapes, the caged shapes anyways. I was able to still improv and go and go forever- but for some reason I was always overthinking everything’s relationships to each other. I would see bits of the chords like the caged shapes, but it was still a piece here and there. But for some reason just now for whatever reason focusing in on one note I started to see all the shapes in 3d. Like up and down the strings vertically and horizontally now I know where the scale degrees of all the root notes are forward and backward and up and down. Holy shit!! Fretboard fluency? It’s finally here?! Now I can see all of the possible steps from whatever note I’m on. Holy fn sht!!! Now wow now I know like what B’s minor thirds major fifth is etc. wtf. My life is worth living! Now all these shapes lock together and the golden tetris shapes glow and stand out in every direction. Watch out world. Here comes the next guitar hero. The next Jerry meets Keef is coming
