this is sooo helpful!! im an adult re-starter. my turn out was forced in childhood which caused a lot of damage to my body. im so thankful i get to start again the right way. its so healing!:)

Great tips! I love the visual you gave of imagining you have a tail that hangs to the floor and zip the jeans. That totally helps me reach those muscles mentally!

I’d love hear what muscles to use and engage for standing turnout. I’d love to hear some great specific advice in this area

There are a number of muscles involved. Without the full anatomical nomenclature they are the inner thighs, the hamstrings, the gluteals, and the major external rotators-the piriformis, gemellus, obturater, and the quadratus femoris muscles located beneath the gluteals. Using these deep rotators is key. (In other words, don’t clench the butt! 😘) 🩰

I love these videos. My body is overly flexible in some parts, I often find myself wanting to "lock" my knees backwards, it would be wonderful to see a video on what to think about when having an overly flexible body :)

This is so helpful. I've been trying to emulate the turnout that i see and my hips haven't been what's turning out my knees have been. So they've been twisting in the socket painfully (I'm hypermobile). And i knew that wasn't good.

I’m soooo glad you ran across my video! Turning out only from the feet and lower leg can really compromise the hips, knees, and ankles. Always rotate the leg from the hip and this will give you turnout you can use! 💕🩰✨

This is so helpful thank you! I have awful turnout and i feel like it’s hindering my dancing progress and it’s something I’m embarrassed about when dancing. But I feel as though I am getting better with the control of it

Question: along with doing your videos (which are so helpful btw) I’m also doing a beginner ballet program (from STEEZY studio not sure if you’ve heard of it) but the teacher from there has told me that I have to engage my glute and thigh muscles along with tucking in my pelvis. My question is if I should do what they said or if you think it’d be better if I didn’t.

Tucking is not turnout, so I would definitely avoid tucking. You can watch my “How To Turn Out Correctly” and “Turnout Mistakes and How To Fix Them” videos. Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful. Do you have any advice for people with sway back legs? When I did ballet as a child I always had problems with balance and stability because it felt like my calves were pulling my weight backwards.

You’re welcome! It sounds like you have hyperextended knees..m If so, You’ll want to be sure not to “lock back” in the knees. Instead, pull up strongly through the legs. Hypertension is really beautiful but also quite tricky to work with because the legs go beyond straight. This type of of issue requires extra strength to be able to control the way you hold yourself on top of your legs without the knees (or calves) pulling back too much. My advice is to work in 1st position with the heels touching as you build your strength. Having the legs in 1st will prevent the knees from locking back. Is this what you mean by “sway back legs?” Hope this helps! 😊🩰🌸

@@everydayballet Thank you so much for your reply. I will try your suggestion of working in first position. I did the RAD exams to Elementary level but couldn’t get beyond that stage. I also found it difficult to get a nice line in arabesque because I couldn’t seem to rotate my leg enough. Now I just want to return for the exercise and enjoyment.

You’re very welcome! This exercise is good to do a couple of times per week. Be careful not to overdo it as this will create tightness. Ideally you’ll want to stretch and strengthen equally. Hope this helps! 😊💕🩰

I have a question for you! I just started ballet at 22 and while I am loving it so far, keeping my turn out while dancing is very difficult for me (especially during releve). As soon as I try to pull myself up off the ground my heels immediately want to straighten out and turn to the back. Do you have any tips on how to hold turn out in this case? Also, where should my weight be when the heels are off of the ground? Perhaps it will come with time but it is definitely frustrating! Thank you :)

Great question! Yes, turnout stamina takes some time to develop. The most important thing when starting out is not over-rotating the feet, so be sure you are using your natural turnout. When pulling up the heels during relevé, you’ll want to press down through the 2nd toe (the one next to the big toe). At the same time, try to tuck the outside/back of the heel toward the inner thighs. The weight should remain pressing down through the 2nd toe the entire time you are going up and down instead of pitching out towards the pinkie toe. The backs of the legs should feel like they are working in turnout. This is a good indication you are activating the right muscles in order to maintain your turnout. You may want to review my other turnout videos, especially the one about turnout mistakes and how to fix them. Also see my “Ballerina Legs” videos for more pointers on doing relevés. This is was a great video thank you! I have just started learning ballet at 35! I have done salsa & hiphop for years so this is totally new to me.. my turnout is definitely not perfect but I would rather do what you have said & work within my limits to be the best that I can be. I have a question.. am I too old to learn this skill?

Hi! No need to apologize--this is an excellent question! Although I cannot see you to be able to say for sure, it sounds to me like you may be rolling forward in your ankles. So in addition to lessening the degree of your turnout, you'll also want to pull up through the fronts of the ankles so that they feel "tall". This will take pressure off the knees and help ensure that the knees AND shins are rotating open to face the toes. When you do this you should also begin to feel the backs of the legs and inner-thighs working to maintain this alignment. This is the work of turnout. I hope this helps! 🙏🏻🥰🩰

Hello! I was practicing the first exercise and I keep feeling the burn on the hip flexor of my leg that is lifted rather than the standing leg. I'm not gripping the bar very tightly, are there any other things that I could be doing wrong? Thank you!

Hi! Thanks for your great question! It sounds like the front of your hip is gripping more than the back of your legs are working. Though I cannot see you to evaluate, it may be that you are trying to open your knee too far and are twisting your pelvis toward the lifted leg. Also, keep the leg low (with the toe at the ankle) and keep your movements smaller until you have located those thutt muscles. Try actively releasing the front of the hips as you draw in and up with your core. Imagine the backs of the thighs drawing together. At first the turnout muscles can be hard to locate because they are smaller and more subtle than your hip flexor, quads, and glutes. But with time and by keeping the movements smaller, you will begin to feel your inner thighs and backs of the legs more powerfully and then you can increase your range of movement. Hope this helps! It's not "bad", but feeling the work in the upper body does indicate that you are holding a lot of tension there. Ideally, you want to release the upper body and isolate the leg movements so that you feel the work in the backs and undersides of the legs. Hope this helps! 🥰🙏🏻🩰

Thank you for your question (and your English is just fine! 😊). I think you are saying that you were told to have more pressure/weight in the ball of the foot-This is correct when the legs are straight, but the heel should still be connected with the ground. In plié you will want a “heavy” heel to properly stretch the Achilles’ tendon. You will know your weight distribution is correct because you will feel the BACK of the legs in plié (not just the front). The heel only leaves the floor in grand plié. Hope this helps! 🙏🥰🩰🌸

Hi! Turnout is a big issue for A LOT of dancers. Doing stretches & strengthening those turnout muscles GRADUALLY is the way to go. The important thing is not to force your turnout! Unless you are striving for a professional career in ballet, the amount of turnout you have won't prevent you from doing ballet and dancing beautifully! The exercise in this video is very strengthening (be sure to do both sides). Good posture will also affect your ability to turn out correctly, so be sure to see my videos for that as well. You'll want to focus on these elements for better turnout: Correct posture/alignment Strong core control Gentle hip stretching Patience & GENTLE diligence I hope this helps! 🥰🤞🏻🩰

Every body is different, and without being able to see your form it is hard for me to say what the exact issue could be. But the video below works the turnout lying down, which should help build strength and awareness in those turnout muscles. With time that awareness should translate to better standing form.
