The Crosstrek really isn't a competitor to be other two. That would be the Forester, but I understand they're logistics involved with a comparison test, and sometimes vehicles are not completely perfectly matched to one another.

A far better comparison would have been to use the CX5 Signature with the turbo (250 HP with premium), the Cherokee Overland with the turbo 270 HP with premium), and the Subaru Outback XT also with a turbo (260 HP). With each coming it at or near $40,000 US I feel that those three vehicles play on the same stage and offer a more competitive suite of features, and capabilities along with having similar power and performance.

Great review guys! I would take exception to the parchment interior. I’ve had light/white interiors on my last 3 cars (BMW X5, Audi Q7, and TESLA Model 3) and never had any issues with them getting dirty to the point of not being easily cleaned...and that’s with two young boys aging through their pre-teen years playing soccer, through high school and playing lacrosse, fencing, wrestling, and ice hockey! I will say, I would almost pay money to see Todd put his hair in a man bun while driving!! LOL. I'd buy the WRX hatch (lifted or not) with a 6 speed manual in a heartbeat. Unfortunately the 5 speed manual in the Impreza is not nearly as good as the 6 speed in the Crosstrek and they're both down on power over everything else I'd consider. I appreciate the comparison between the CX-5 and the Crosstrek because I've considered those exact two cars head to head.

I’m so confused by how you picked these 3. The Crosstrek is a sub-compact-crossover, while CX5 and the Cherokee are compacts. Why / how did you pick these contenders? I'm late to comment on this......but the Cherokee has a Sport setting that you didn't use! All manufacturers gear their vehicles for economy and that's why they are boring as a daily driver. However in Sport mode this changes the upshift & downshift points as well as sharpening the throttle response. You should know this and should have demonstrated this difference in driving the Cherokee. This model now has a very sharp response compared to earlier production. Thanks

Two years ago I test drove the 2019 Cherokee and CX5 among other compact SUV’s. I ended up purchasing a Cherokee with the 2.0 turbo and absolutely love it. I love the looks of the CX5 but it had a cramped interior, slow noisy engine, horrible infotainment and felt like a tin can. The Jeep was way more solid feeling and much quieter. Also, to get the turbo engine in the Mazda was $10,000 more than what I paid for the Cherokee.

My Mother-in-law has a Crosstrek, and I must say, I don't like it at all. It has numb steering and handling, the engine sounds like an air cooled riding lawnmower (it makes a ton of racket when it is on fast idle when you start it in cold weather). The interior looks and feels outdated, and I guess it's the CVT that makes the car feel gutless. I had originally recommended either the Mazda CX-5 or Nissan Rogue instead, but she ultimately made a deal on the Crosstrek. To be fair, it is a stark contrast from my own daily, a Focus ST, and that is probably the main reason the Subie feels so utilitarian... I agree that the Cherokee has come a long way, and hopefully it can correct some of the durability issues that previous Jeep products were known for. Not everyone has the money for an SRT Grand Cherokee...

You can have the 182hp 2.5 in the Crosstrek; problem is they come with Eyesight which make windscreen replacement(a yearly thing for me somehow) a 1400 buck affair, the air con compressor and evaporator will probably let go at around the 70 000 km mark and cost 2k to repair and timing belt which is another 2k affair at around 100 000 km. So, a costly car to own.

The crosstrek uses a timing chain, not belt so it will typically last the life of the car. I’ve never heard of ac and evap core going out that quickly on any car, unless something else was going on with it. I will however agree with you on the windshield, I do not like the added “safety” feature that they added into the newer ones.

Coming off a lease on a 2019 Jeep Cherokee turbo 4. I tried out the Mazda vs. the 2021 Jeep Cherokee Limite (with a nice accessories package). The Mazda version did have a turbo 4. It was very nice, and would have been my first pick. But in the end Chrysler's incentives blew away the pricing on the Mazda. Note, I did not like the rotary knob controls on the console of the Mazda. My new 2021 Jeep does have the V6. While not as spunky, I have learned to compensate with the throttle. It seems quieter. It will probably have poorer gas mileage vs. the turbo 4. Great comparisons! Thank you!

The CX-5 is nice...with the turbo. I think it needs it to feel right. The turbo also makes it more unique in the segment. Low power cars really aren't useful in the modern world. HP and driving speeds have universally ramped up where it seems more and more dangerous when you don't have 250 HP or more. It would be a different story if cars remained very light, but the ever increasing weight necessitates HP. I can't say I've liked Subaru for the same reason when they dropped down to the 2.0L size in the NA format. The Legacy with the 3.6L is great. The Legacy with the new 2.4L turbo is great. The Legacy with the NA is a dog. The smaller Impreza is a dog too. These cars felt only slightly peppy in the lighter weight earlier generations, but my old, old Forester made HP and torque and was lighter. In modern times, I can never buy a low HP car. It's either a 4 cylinder turbo or a V6, nothing less. The CVT transmission really needs bigger engines. They work great. From an engineering standpoint, the CVT is about as ideal as you can get. And Subaru makes a good one. Paired to the larger 3.6L engine, it feels great and acts great. I works super well with actual torque behind it and an engine that is linear in response. When tuned well, it's stellar. I hate every automatic car I drive because it isn't as good as CVT. But any CVT paired with a small engine with no power will always be an annoying experience. It's not the CVT's fault. It's just that the engine is weak. I'm a manual guy. I have several and race manuals. But I will always happily buy a CVT because it is technically amazing...if it's programmed well and paired to a good engine. I will pick a CVT over any ZF auto with however many gears they want to package into it. It's just rare that a CVT is paired with a bigger engine. There's not many CVTs paired to V6s or even turbo 4 cylinders. A CVT paired to a big V8 is like a unicorn. There's only one vehicle that you can buy with a CVT paired to a V8. More brands need to embrace CVT, but more brands need to embrace bigger engines again and just do cylinder deactivation to save gas. Small turbo does not equal mileage, and small NA does but is so compromising. I was in the market for a new vehicle, and my market were these cars and even the larger 3 row vehicles too. I also looked at mid size trucks because those too offer seating for 5 but also high utility. I liked the Cherokee. I almost bought one, but their reliability and deprecation was highly unknown. It just felt like a bigger sedan, especially on the non-Trailhawk version. The Trailkawk was just on a firmer spring, more up on its toes, and felt just a wee bit different. But other versions might as well have been a full size sedan, very natural feeling, intuitive, and well refined. The CX-5 turbo is interesting. I would never want the NA though. I avoided previous generations because of the lack of power. I like the CX-5 turbo, and they tuned it far better than the CX-9. The CX-5 is full and the upscale interior feels reasonably special. I've been a Subaru guy for over a decade, but I've never driven the new generation Impreza/Crosstrek. I went straight to the Legacy/Outback. I have old Foresters, and the new generations don't bring anything new to me. They don't interest me, and that's bad for Subaru. I liked the new styling of the Legacy (new, previous), and the 3.6L is a great engine, albeit underutilized (needs hotter cams and stronger top end to really be a fun engine). I've owned the Legacy for a short time, but it wasn't quite what I wanted. So I was on the hunt for a SUV again, possibly the Outback, but I was looking at everything. I was also looking at midsize trucks and test drove all of them. At the end of my search, I bought a Honda Ridgeline. It's a vehicle that's at the same price point as the vehicles in this comparison, $30k to $40k. Plus you can get it in the SUV version in a 5 or 8 seater in the Pilot and Passport versions. This is a bigger vehicle, sure, but you're still in a similar market. I really find a better vehicle at this price and package of features. It has a V6 and a peppier engine than Subaru, similar to the Jeep's V6 but has a little more character to it. The interior is upscale but also utilitarian, a good mix of nice and utility and less extreme in this sense than Mazda or Subaru. The cabin is quiet, and the ride is smooth. It soaks up bumps extremely well, and it's cushy. But it also handles well, especially with the fancy rear diff with the iVMT (SHAWD) and torque vectoring. It's quick with good power. It corners very well and feel stable and well controlled. It's tuning is good with excellent balance and stability. Then you can hook 5000 lbs to the back and go cross country and still get over 20mpg. Want to know what mpg I'm pulling at 65mph down the highway? 36mpg...in a truck. I get mid 20s in city/mixed, and get 19-21 towing. It gets as good as my Legacy which had better aero. It rides better. It has the same tech (although Honda's adaptive cruise doesn't go to 0mph and crash mitigation systems are about half as good). It's better than the Cherokee. It's better than the Crosstrek. It's better than the CX-5. Honda is offering a better total package, and and it's the same price. There's really only one thing I don't really like, which is the standard automatic. It's...ok, but a pretty normal thing in a modern world of better stuff. The newer Ridgelines do now get a 9 speed ZF though which is probably about the same thing as in the Cherokee I would guess. That's the challenge in all of this. The automotive market is broad, and there's a lot of overlap. Unless you're attempting to go to one feature or performance extreme, usually there's more than a dozen or two vehicles across several segments that all fit your wants pretty well. The best pick might not be the segment you're initially shopping. I was shopping in the segment as the three tested here, and I bought none of them. There was something better. In a segment that carries 5 adults or more, hauls stuff, does adventure well, brings tech, offers utility, and does it all in the $30k to $40k range, man, I'm hard pressed to ever pass up with Honda offers. The only caveat is that this opens the door to other vehicles too, bigger SUVs, trucks, etc., and part of this comparison is a purposeful adherence to smaller vehicles, to which the Honda is comparatively large and big for even a midsize truck identity. But $40k is $40k any way you spend it, so what's the best total value you can get for those dollars?

I'm stunned by the number of Imprezas and Crosstreks in Colorado. Subaru owners are obviously not car people and they clearly buy them with minimal test driving. That engine makes 130 hp at Denver altitude, about 100 hp at most mountain passes. There's no real-world fuel economy advantage when you have to flog the engine to keep up with traffic and it's destroying the CVT belts and the head gaskets and whatever else Subaru will recall in 3-5 years.

Absolutely agree. I live in Berkeley CA where Subaru has replaced Volvo as the ONLY car permitted to own if you are politically correct. Its boxer engine has a bad rep for long-term durability, and no self-respecting manufacturer would castrate their car with a CVT. That transmission would be a deal-breaker for me right there. But for the people who buy these things? All they know is which bumper stickers are fashionable this year.

I own a crosstrek and recently took it to Denver and the mountains and yes that engine is NOT equipped to handle at altitude on hills and struggles due to being underpowered. However, in the snow it shines, I’m the AWD Subaru makes is better than any competitors hands down (I’ve gone around Jeep’s in snow storms). So for me the cross trek enters the market at ~$25k which is very affordable and the off-road and winter capabilities with intuitive screen and beefed suspension makes it super practical. I personally like the CX5 drive better and the looks are great, it’s sporty and luxurious; however, I wouldn’t want to take my CX5 on the roads I’ll take my crosstrek bec the CX5 seems a bit to luxurious.

If you want a luxurious compact CUV then buy the friken Mazda,if you want a CUV that deserves the term *Crossover* and willl outperform) ANY of the vehicles listed (off-road) then get the Jeep Trailhawk Edition Cherokee. Personally I love the 2014-18 look of the Jeep Cherokee and feel that in 2019 they caved to all the Jeep Wrangler snobs. Personally I couldn't wait for Jeep to make something that looks like it was actually designed in the 21st century😏 I was so done with the square CJ rolling brick/kidney shaker. I've had it with all hate about the modern look of the 2014-18 Cherokee.🤬 I own a 2015 with the 3.2 pentastar 275 horse 251 ft lbs of torque. It leaves these other vehicles struggling off road. It has full underbody cladding and heavier springs and shocks a dual speed transfer case and a rear locking differential which none of these other vehicles have yes even the Badlands! I find the Cherokee trailhawk edition to be an incredible vehicle. Its ride and interior leave nothing to complain about. I have had zero issues with it in 50,000 miles and average 20 mpg around town and 26mpg highway with mixed mpg of 21. The tires still have 50% of their tread! Tire rotations, oil changes, cabin and engine air filters are all of the maintenance done to this vehicle. Even the brakes have another 40-50k left on them! * In closing,if you want a luxurious mini van that looks like a CUV then by all means get the Mazda* ••If you want a B@||$ to the wall off roader/daily driver it's the Trailhawk😏

Have to disagree. If one buys a lower end model, and is careful with the options, cars today are IMO not overpriced. Compared to 5 or 10 years ago, current vehicles offer huge advances in safety, driver assistance, and entertainment features. If new car prices are too expensive, one can always get a 2 or 3 year old used model. Whether our society has kept up in wage growth and general criticism of our social structure is another issue.

Been a fan of you guys for years, a long-time subscriber. Thanks for the great content. However, let's get something clear out of the way. These cars, as priced, are all vastly over-priced. 30-40k for a 4 cylinder and questionable transmission. Absurd. The technology placed in these cars doesn't justify the astronomical prices. And quite frankly, the obsession of focusing on car technology with regards to the multimedia is useless. The way cars are packaged with tech is the single biggest automotive industry problem. To get the better engine and/or transmission, you have to pay out the roof and add all these useless tech packages. None of these technology features (looking at touchscreen infotainment centers) require the cost that you are charged for upgrades. A $400 iPhone se is more snappy, responsive, and user - friendly than any of these infotainment systems. Which by the way often add hundreds to a couple grand to upgrade. Why switch from the physical buttons and knobs of yesterday? Simple. Repair costs. When that screen goes out, those repairs will not be cheap. How often do you break a button/knob? In 5 years, all of these systems will be outdated and sluggish. Knobs, physical mechanisms - those will not. Another incentive to get people to buy new cars. The emphasis on the multimedia/technology experience allows manufacturers to shift R and D away from important factors - engine, transmission, suspension, etc. CVTs are - in general - atrocious. And the longevity of those transmissions compared to a 6 or 8 speed auto are questionable. CVTs are hailed as fuel saving - I'd argue the main emphasis is cost-cutting. The only tech features I truly care about are safety. How much do you think a rear-view camera, blindspot monitoring, and those sensors really cost to develop? I guarantee it's a mere fraction of what they charge. Point is - the price of the modern everyday people mover is ludicrous. The emphasis on certain technology features allows bundling to be used to achieve astronomical prices for the desired configuration that most people want - engine, drivetrain, etc. These cars, and in general your average daily driver, are best found in their near base form. The loaded variants are a waste of money. If it were me, a base awd Cx-5 for 25-26k would be the way to go. I appreciate the review as always, I'm merely frustrated at the modern-day price structure of cars.

As a general rule, I can’t stand social engineering and Mazda ruined it for me because they dabbled in it. So here’s the story. My Miata was in for warranty service and I got an Mazda 3 loaner. I was leaving work one day for my 70 mile commute home and noticed that the AC was barely working. This was aggravating because it was hot outside. I stopped to get a cold drink and some gas. Turns out, when you’re low on fuel, the car’s computer shuts off the AC to conserve fuel. As soon as I put fuel in the car the AC worked fine again so I read up on it and that’s what I discovered. What if I’d been a single mom with two small children in the car baking to a crisp. It was about 90* with 80% humidity outside. With each model year of new cars it seems we’re all being herded into a “welcome to no choice” engineering. On principle, I can’t stand that. Turns out my Miata does not have this feature, I checked.
