I've driven all 3. The Honda is a niche car, great engine, tight feel, and set up for sport. It's not as good a daily as the others, but competent racing. The S2000 is a car you race. The FRS/BRZ is technically excellent. The balance is outstanding, very easy to drive at the edge, and ergonomics are great. It's a car you can hustle really easy. The RX8 is a softer car but still highly competent. The RX8 is the most practical car as it can actually seat 4 adults...comfortably. The RX8 feels more premium. The engine is smoother, the ride is smoother, and the cabin is quieter. I now own a RX8

Has 110k miles on it now and still driving like the day I bought it.. for the price there is no competition here the rx8 wins you just need to make sure you get a compression test done before buying one. I get 22 mpg average which is respectable for the power output, super easy to top the oil off every 2-3 weeks as well... and the thing is an absolute rocket!!
@BanshoWT9 жыл бұрын
RX8 is a true enthusiasts car. If you don't give it attention it will break on you. Enjoy your blown engine at 80k miles because you forgot to redline and oil topoff. It has such a bad reputation from moron owners, be thankful for its wickedly low prices on the used market. I cross shopped between the FRS and RX8. I encourage people to drive them both, you have to be delusional to believe the FRS is better at anything besides fuel economy. Styling is obviously subjective but the feel/handling of the rotary is unmatched. 9k rpm unicorn sauce YOLO
@mrbrain809 жыл бұрын
You mean your going to blown your motor rotary engine at 80k. I've had 2nd and 3rd gen rx7. Rebuilt time is around 100k. Rotary is hard to rebuilt and cost a lot to maintain. I'll go with the s2000 no doubt. Scion brand will always be a cheap to me. Scions are meant for 16 years.
@BanshoWT9 жыл бұрын
mrbrain80 I don't believe you have owned a 2nd or 3rd gen rx7 with dumb comments like that. Engines only blow up from carbon build up, where they will fail compression from apex seal wear which is quite different. And fixing a rotary is much much easier than a piston. Keep drinking that kool-aid, btw, RENESIS is very different from "your rx7s" (riiiiight) 13B; better oil lubrication and 9k redline to scratch the surface

After doing tons of research and trying to find a fun track car I landed on the rx8. I was scared at first about the cost but do some research. I picked up a fully loaded near mint 2005 with a blown motor for $1100. Then found a rebuilt motor for $800 and got it installed for $300. The same shop will do a full rebuilt including all parts for $1700. Then I found I needed a transmission. At this point I thought I was screwed but I picked up a freshly rebuilt transmission got $300 with a new clutch and to install if I don’t do myself will be around $400. So with all said I have a very reliable track car for less than $3000. And now I have tons of money left for mods.

+Luigi Chun Do it, seriously I've owned my 04' for three years now, dailying it and its just awesome. I would look for an AP2, they just took care of a ton of little issues the AP1's suffered and the car has three torques instead of two so it's a bit better in traffic and day to day driving.Fair warning the car is gutless until about five thousand and VTEC kicks in at six grand. And check the car you look at, wring out and shift it hard from 1-2 and 2-3, if it grinds you've likely got worn synchros. Some of these cars have seen hard use, and might still clean up nice even after abuse. Plus again, if you're driving it right you're changing gear at 8,000rpm and that's tough on a gearbox.Also look at the quality of the top, if and when it goes bad it's surprisingly pricey to replace, because the top is actually glued to the bars of the convertible top's frame in certain places and it's a production to replace the top.There is also the timing chain tensioner, which can go bad. Try to get the car hot and shut it off and let it heat sink. Fire it back up, if there's a ticking noise from under the hood, the TCT is going bad. There's a modified part online that seems to solve the problem but if you pay Honda to replace it with their factory part, it can apparently go bad again in a thousand miles or last you another fifty thousand plus miles.If it can pass those tests, pull the trigger and buy it. Such a fun little car to drive, deceptively quick, and it really is Honda when Honda stood for something.

Another S2000 owner here. The S2K is such a great car for someone like me who likes to enjoy curvy backroads during nice weather while running up and down through the gears - always with the top down. It truly has been far more fun than I could have imagined. But I can also understand why some might choose one of the other two cars in this comparison for any number of reasons. If it wasn't for my preference to own a convertible as a weekend car I'm sure that I could have plenty of fun in either the FRS or the RX8. (For that matter I'm sure that I'd manage to have plenty of fun in a Miata as long as it had a manual transmission.) People can argue to no end over which of these cars they feel is the best but the sad fact is that the market for driver-oriented cars like these seems to be fading away. Of course the S2000 and the RX8 are no longer made. But I'd also point out that sales of the Subaru BRZ dropped more than 7% in 2018 (3834 cars sold) while sales of the Toyota 86 dropped by nearly 40% (4146 cars sold). No information was provided about what percentage of the cars sold included a manual transmission. There's no telling how much longer these cars will continue to exist. Even the ever popular Miata suffered a 20% decline in sales last year (8971 cars sold). The decline in sales extends beyond just these cars to include a number of other vehicles that are more oriented towards the driving enthusiast. It seems that most auto buyers not looking for a pickup these days are really only interested in SUVs / CUVs complete with automatic transmissions of course. More info can be found on the Road & Track site here: www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/g25735819/2018-cars-nobody-bought/ If you've been wanting to own the type of vehicles featured in this video, or for that matter any other car geared more towards the actual driving experience, I'd recommend that you go ahead and pick whichever one appeals the most to you and buy it sooner rather than later.

I understand i'm late to the party, but No one at all is going to bring up the fact that : RX-8 is - -4-door -4-seater -only 200lb heavier than the other 2, -(or that while even now at 6'2 and 250lb+ i fit comfortably in both the front and back seats of RX-8, while 13 year ago under 6' and 80lb lighter i couldn't function in the seat of S2K and had to claw at pavement to get my self out as i was stuck.) -the one common major issue that RX-8 engine has is an ignorant dumbass for an owner -the "MAJOR OVERHAUL" of the rotary engine is basically seal replacement and can be done before lunch if you're not doing it with your feet, even once in 120k miles, now imagine the process of changing the piston rings you neglected the oiling of) or imagine dealing with the aftermath of a timing belt giving out on your reliable Honda Vtec engine (i did) there must be a lot of stock engines under 2L that make anywhere near this power that neglected reliably go into 200k miles territory, yea, rotary is terrible, phew

I've owned all three of these cars and I can say all three are amazing! I couldn't agree more with their review in stating that the FRS seems to be my least favorite as it lacks the power, doesn't rev quite as high, and has a tad bit more oversteer (which can be fun). It's still a great car, just the other two are slightly better. I must say that the RX8 was the one I had the hardest time getting rid of. That was probably because it made a fantastic daily driver and always put a smile on my face driving it with it's oddly amazing rotary motor. The S2000 was hands down the fastest and the most fun, but it really became a pain as a daily driver.

I've driven all three and bought an rx8, just fell in love with the power delivery of the rx8. The FRS is way too expensive for a relatively basic and definitely underpowered car, so for me it became a toss up between honda and mazda, and the fact that the S2000 is roughly double the price of an RX8 and is far less practical for daily use it was an easy choice. Heated leather seats, Bose sound system, big trunk and four doors with decent enough space inside for four adults! The cost of oil for me has worked out to about £5 a month and gets checked every other full tank of fuel so really not a big deal to me after 20,000 miles without a single problem.

Today's RX8 are about 3K with engine failure. Get this done and some other stuff (like brakes, suspension) and for 10k you'll have a hell of an everyday drive. More than just 2 seats and that exotic looks.

The reason why I chose the Mazda is because it's the fastest, the most practical, and the sound... don't get me talking about it. It's a little bit drunk and drinks a litre of oil every 1000 miles, but so far I haven't had a single issue with it.

Test drove a frs, and bought a rx8. The frs felt cheap. Handled great but felt like a prius would out run it. My 06 rx8 handles great too, but doesn't feel cheap and has more power. Do like the looks of the frs though. Lol the Honda dealer told me the hood was carbon fiber over and over again, I just had to shake my head.

Just to note, with the RX-8, if you're not keeping the revs up in the 5000RPM range, not only are you losing out on power but you're also shortening the engine life. Rotary engines don't behave like reciprocating engines. On a reciprocating engine, you have to make sure not to overrev to prevent wear on the crankshaft and rods. On a rotary, you have to make sure to keep the revs up to prevent carbon buildup. So, in short, if you're driving the RX-8 slow, letting it idle a lot, shifting at low RPMs or hypermilling, you're flat-out driving it wrong and the engine doesn't like that.

FRS is the same price as a Honda SI. I could not imagine choosing the SI over the FRS and I work for Honda. Honda designers need to really look at cars like the FRS and 375 Z and design something that actually looks nice. The new SI is hideous in my opinion.
@Shnagloggler10 жыл бұрын
I am because they are both considered sports cars for the same price range, so although they have different drive trains they attract a similar target markets. Also you will notice I am only talking about the comparisons from a design perspective not a drive train.
@S3maxime1610 жыл бұрын
Shnagloggler For people that have to use the car during the winter as well, the SI is much better. If I lived somewhere warmer I would definitly buy a FRS over the SI tho.
@Shnagloggler10 жыл бұрын
S3maxime16 Yeah for sure in winter conditions I would probably be comparing the SI with the GTI and although I think the SI is more reliable I would probably end up buying the GTI considering the 2015 has 258lbs of torque compared to Hondas 170.
@S3maxime1610 жыл бұрын
True but as you said, If you're planning on keeping the car for a while, maintenance is a lot cheaper on a civic.
@Shnagloggler10 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is true absolutely. I live in Canada and they build Civics and CRV's in Alliston. Whereas with Volkswagen you pay a large premium for the parts because they are imported plus the labour is more expensive. Its one of those things my common sense will lean toward the SI but that part of me that wants something a little more will probably manipulate my mind into buying the GTI.

Cheapest only because you can only buy them used. New ones went for 32-36k, which is as much as 11 grand more than an FRS. I'd imagine if Toyota wanted to sell the FRS for 30-35 grand, it would be a very different car than what it is now. As it stands, it costs less than a loaded Camry.
@ThisisBrak10 жыл бұрын
cfusionpm A valid point and yes I meant cheapest because of the price you can buy them at right now. What's sad is that a car that began production in 1999 is dominating vehicles 15 years later. I would spend 32k on an s2000 and have it be THAT good for 15 years than 20k on an rx-8 and br-z today and have it lose in its first year to a 15 year old car which is clearly superior.

To this day, I have driven many cars that could be on the same level of such pure joy, except the Cayman S, which I've also owned. Oh, and the gear box...Good God, it was incredible! One of the best gear boxes ever made in history. It was so crisp, precise, short-throw, and engaging. I miss it very much!!! I hope Honda will make a new version of it. I was in my early 20s when I owned it, now I'm old. :( The fun I had back then with the top down and summer heat and wind blowing in my face, sometimes with different girls accompanied me. God, those were the fun days of a youngster!

Being a master certified technician I always research a potential purchase, while the Mazda rotary engine has been proven to be a force to be reckoned with as you mentioned it burns a lot of oil and drinks a lot of gas. The Honda has also secured it's place with the VTEC engine that is best described as that of a power band in a two stroke dirt bike. My 09 Tacoma has the 4.0 with the variable valve timing and when you stick your foot in it, the attitude of the engine changes as well as the exhaust note. So while the VTEC is a tried and true power plant, everyone owns a Honda. That leaves the FR-S, actually the best engine design ever built, the apposed engine doesn't offer any vertical thrust on the engine bearings. Due to the design of either inline or "V" engines they both wear the engine bearings, lower mains and upper rods, the boxer engine doesn't wear the bearings because of the apposed design, the crankshaft floats in a film of oil. Another good point is they got away from the timing belts so you don't have to replace that on regular intervals. While none of these cars are destine to be family cars, the Honda doesn't have a back seat, the Mazda probably has the best back seat and the FR-S back seat is just for show. So then you have to look at intended use, while all three could be daily drivers the Mazda will require the most maintenance where the Honda and FR-S would probably be similar possibly a slight edge to the FR-S due to the lack of a timing belt. However at the end of the day you can't buy a new Honda S2000, I feel the FR-S will get better and you can keep the RX8. Although unless your racing, 200 HP out of a 2.0L engine should get you back and forth from the grocery store. Personally I like the timing chain and rear wheel drive. I have to make some room as I currently own 9 vehicles, 2 motorcycles and 2 jet ski's, so my yard looks like a used car lot.

Very informative, great perspective. Thanks for taking the time to write this. I own both a Subaru BRZ and a Porsche Cayman and what surprised the heck out of me is that I usually enjoy driving the BRZ more. I love getting a little loose at low speeds and that's pretty much the name of the game for the BRZ. The Cayman just STICKS to the road. I feel planted in the Cayman, I have way more confidence to go fast. It's much more of a posh high speed driving experience and the BRZ is my grins every day daily driver.
@mrgearheadfromhell8 жыл бұрын
Edwin Tracy Thank you, I don't see the point in simply saying this is better or worse than that without the facts that are involved in coming to the conclusion. Unfortunately a lot of money can be lost really quick when you start looking at sports cars, having the right information makes all the difference. Personally I like to "drive sideways" and so long as I can afford tires I will continue to do so. The best thing about the FR-S / BRZ is as long as they are selling they will continue to improve them. I have seen videos of people putting superchargers on them already, so the aftermarket industry is also working on bolt on upgrades. I have been inside Subaru boxer engines with 155,000+ miles that didn't need main or rod bearings. The engines I tore down were due to overheating to the extent that the tension on the rings was gone so they were burning oil like a freight train, the heads were pink on one and had to be replaced. I just honed the cyl's and replaced the rings. However you have to split the block in half to get the crank out, it's really a interesting engine to build. The new engines with the DOHC 4 valve heads have got to be insane, it's basically the same block just a different valve train. I'm going to give them another year or two because I believe they will be stepping up the later generations. Keep in mind "control" is an illusion, this is the type of car that reminds you of that.

Mick turbo It is the EQUIVALENT, not that it actually is. Meaning it makes similar power/emissions as a 2.6 liter piston engine. Because of this it was classified as a 2.6 liter for taxation in the UK purposes, and for race sanctioning for some events/leagues. But the engine itself has a displacement of 1308cc/1.3 liters, NOT 2.6 liters.
@K20EF85 жыл бұрын
@@agent27droid It doesnt matter what its "displacement" is in the traditional definition. Every engine cycle results in the combustion of 1.3L of volume as apposed to a 4 stroke piston engine which has its volume combusted over 2 revolutions. ie if you want to compare its the equivalent of 2616cc 4 stroke engine.

I had the opportunity to buy a 2010 RX8 R3 with low miles and at a fraction the price of an S2000... because of the reputation for reliability. The second gen RX still needs to be treated like a rotary - proper warm up, cool down, clean oil, don't be afraid to use the rpm's - and the reliability is quite good. In the years that I've had rotary's, I have never had to crack one open. I am keeping this one stock, drive it everyday that has no rain or snow and the driving experience continues to blow me away.

Why I like the Rx8 over the other two: -Low price since its stopped production -Possibility of it becoming a retro/classic in the future -2 usable seats in the back for a coupe (depends on size of passengers though) -Suicide doors, ease of entering/exiting passengers -Longer wheel base provides more stable ride -Personally I really like the styling of the first gen Issues regarding the suspension imo can be retuned to one's liking. The only bad thing imo is the rotary which devours fuel and oil. Either way now that its 2016, prices of Rx8's have gone really low, I can see them for about 3-10k for mid to late 2000's. That is actually one of the main reasons to get one. If I were to do so, I'd definitely do an engine swap. Heck with 2 decent passenger seats, it'd be fine as a daily driver for a single child family!

No traction control, it has only two airbags instead of the fifty-five that new cars all seem to come with, it has an actual mechanical throttle cable, there isn't a 78" TV screen embedded in the dash, and if you need to back up you actually need to turn your head and look behind you.The S2000 was a fine car for its time, but it's obviously an outdated, archaic, arguably dangerous relic :P

I love all three to death, even owned an ap2 s2000 for a while. I loved that car. But due to a 2 seater being impractical and my budget for a car dropped about 10k, the RX-8 is my choice. Quad coupe with the perks of RWD 6spd gear box and a buttery smooth engine, you can't go wrong. Many people love or hate it, which is fine, to-each-their-own. I'm excited to buy an RX-8!

These days honda's reputation as an automaker has kept falling down...the only way to get it where it used to be and show what they really are capable of is to make sports cars like the s2000 and the NSX again. Fortunately they know what they have to do and are working on the forthcoming NSX 2, so we should just be a little more patient for the announcement of the next s2000.

the early type r integra and civic type r was awesome but yea what you said is right the newest civic type r they made was no upgrade on power compared to previous models and heavier with worse suspension so the all new 2015 civic type r they have announced will hopefully be awesome

You mean a sports car reputation right? Because the honda civic is the best deal out there for commuting. You can rack serious miles on them with no repairs, they get 35mpg, and only cost 15-17k. Honda doesn't make a living off sports cars. They sell more cars than most other car companies that's not falling down.

Hahaha, Honda showed us a concept recently that will be the successor called the Honda S660. Hopefully, this new car lives up to the expectations.

Honda was never really in the business to build sports cars. They built cars only to showcase tgere VTEC great motors thoo

Just TUNE the FRS (put a small turbo or a super charger) and all your problems are solved!

Just like with every other car in the world, put one in the van and the kids wouldn't shut up. Help me solve that problem without killing them or the performance.

***** this is why i'm not going to put a turbo or supercharger on my fr-s.. maybe 10years later
@MrMikeDao11 жыл бұрын
NiTheGod Haha yeah, and not only that you also need to get it properly tuned so that's about another $700+ depending on your local dyno shop. You'll also run into other problems including cooling, oil cooling, oil returns, possibly relocating of A/C or oil filter or battery.

I bought a Toyota 86 base on your test drives and opinions and ive got to say im not disappointed. It has its limitations in power but knowing that its an easy car to love to drive.

this makes me want to buy a used S2000... hopefully Honda listen to the hardcore sports car loyal customers and make the successor anytime soon. From what i heard they showed up a "Concept" mini convertible to be known as the new S2000. we will see

Love the video. I was always biased toward Toyota, but for me the Rx8 grabs me. Also agree with your statement about Honda being at their peak. I think all companies have this problem. After cars like the S2000, Gtr34, Supra, even the EvoVII companies just...fell. Where did our childhood dream cars go? But all in all love the review and the honesty. Respect to you guys.

Every FRS/BRZ driver drives around thinking he's fast and a badass, until he meets an S2000 on the road :P

i own a brz and admittedly I do feel like I m driving a fast car but whenever i see an s2000 behind me, i would switch to the slowest lane and let it pass. Sad but true:(

lol it's ok, BRZ's are great all around performing cars, just a lack of power, but huge aftermarket support for it
