There's an almost identical Catholic celebration in the north of Brazil, but instead of Jesus the figure that is venerated is of "Our Lady of Nazaré" from Portugal. There's also 2 giant ropes of about 500 meters (1640 foot), weighting about 700 kilos (1543 pounds), and people also struggle to touch it and pull the ropes throughout the whole procession. The celebration exists since 1750 and no one has ever died.

Some are just swayed by peers, but most have their own intentions. Devotees joining this event are mostly those who are praying not just for themselves but for their families and loved ones. As you can see, it will be hard for women to get through the crowd and be able to get closer to the Black Nazarene statue and wipe any type of cloth you have in the statue. I'm Catholic. I used to laugh at these people as though they're in a rock concert mosh pit. That was back then when my perspective on such events was quite immature until I realized more that only God who knows deeply what's inside a devotee's heart even if while praying, you're in front of the image of Poong Nazareno and the Blessed Mother or surrounded by grinning statues of Felix Manalo, Ellen White or Stephen Hawking, etc name it, and not those self-righteous bigots who kept on accusing and spitting out false claims against people who are just not of their flock.

My mom had some stories before that the rope of the procession of the Holy Black Nazarene foretold the outcome of the Philippines within that year. I'm praying for the people on screen while watching your video. Some of them were there to ask for a miracle. Maybe something about their sick/disabled family member, some hoping for a chance to go to school or find work, some wishing to be reunited with a long-lost child or parent. Some are there to thank Jesus for their blessings too. This is how important faith is to most Filipinos. Most of us have very little material-wise, but we do have lots of faith in a higher power that loves and cares for us unconditionally.

Nah, they'd prefer Sinulog. The problem the Feast of the Black Nazarene is that the govt doesn't bother to make 'sanitized' / family friendly version like with the Sinulog or Ati Atihan - so its safer for attendees. Plus there is little infrastructure in Quiapo up til now. The chaos reflects the chaos of Manila city hall in their organizing haha. Blame Mayora.

If you’re not from this area with its religious culture, you will have a hard time joining inside the crowd. There are possible stampedes but these participants know how to survive and get through the crowed towards own safety. I don’t recommend foreigners to get inside the middle of the crowd. If you take a look at the video you see it was very chaotic, and there was rushed to the hospital, if that is really true then the handkerchief that was touched to the stone then needed to cure it. Or on pandemic if that is truly a miracle all handkerchief that was touched by the stones the it should solve easily the Philippines.
