Something you see in the 2000 Grinch remake and the 1999 Dalmations movie is that they know they can't do _everything_ the cartoon did but they're trying to get around that by adding new gags that would've fit the style of their source material with incredible costumes and set design. It's an attempt to make live action as cartoonish and funny as possible. Compare that to the modern Disney remakes and... yeah I think you see the difference.

1966: Heartfelt, concise, a classic through and through. 2000: Chaotic, hilarious, with some great production value. 2018: Soulless grey slop that made more than the other two.

Better to be slop than current Disney and Pixar. I hated the Mario movie but it would be a lot worse if it were done by them. And Dreamworks only seems to do good movies every fourth or fifth movie they release.

The best way I can describe Illumination is *offensively forgettable.* They're not even exceedingly bad, you just get the impression watching their movies that they're trying to do the absolute bare minimum to pander to general audiences.
@just_a_tepig3611

Illumination tries to be the modern hanna barbera for films, in a time and place that isnt really needed. Not to say something has to be expensive to be worth anything. But there's wasteful spending, then there's looking to be minimal. Illumination just lacks any desire to go up and beyond, and it's felt. Where a live action embraces the cartoonish world of dr. Seuss, the modern animated film has no vision.

@@LatterDayPup I'm fascinated by the scene with the single mom. They want us to feel bad for her being super busy and overwhelmed; but they can't go one scene without showing us that she's got superpowers and can handle herself perfectly fine. Then her actual 6-year-old pontificates about how unfair mom's life is and how that makes her feel bad; but the next line of dialogue is her being super hyped about her waffles and sledding out of the house like it's the best day ever. This movie makes vague allusions to things being "sad" or "unfair", but can't muster even 20 seconds of actual negativity without snuffing it under a saccherine bandaid. It's such shallow, cognitively bankrupt storytelling.

1:47:30 you hit the nail on the head. Illumnation uses a specific kind of modeling and rigging where they have a base rig, and every single one of their characters is just a morph of that base rig. This is how they are able to save SOOOOO much money because they essentially cut out a lot of the tech side of CG animation (You'll notice they also re-use the same lighting as every single film). They also re-use a shit ton of assets for the environments which is also why all their cities look exactly the same. All of their films are just adjustments of a base default. And that is the main reason it all looks so soulless and identical to everything else they make and why none of their films have any visual identity.

2000 Grinch was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. I loved it as a kid and it still holds a special place in my heart after all these years. One aspect not discussed by the panel that I think deserves mention is the fact that no music plays during those hilarious, solitary scenes of the Grinch in his cave. I have a feeling the director/editors knew Carrey's performance was funny enough on their own and musical cues and stings would have just made those scenes feel too cheesy.

While I agree with the crew about Jim Carrey being an extremely memorable comedic actor, I would argue that one of his greatest roles of all time was as the titular character of The Truman Show, a completely dramatic role.

To be fair he’s great as a comedic/drama actor when it come to Truman show given his episodes of “insanity” when he becomes wise to the world around him. However I get what you mean by how he follows through great payoffs as a dramatic actor

Seeing the group's appreciation for the 2000 film (my favourite Christmas film) after just saying, "they liked it, it was good, you can at least tell the filmmakers cared" the entire time the 2018 film is playing warms my heart. Especially since they rightfully thrashed the 2018 film for being the trainwreck that it is. Maybe one day a Christmas film will come out and outgross this one.

I think the 2018 has been sanitised of anything that made Seuss so much fun to kids and adults alike. It was so wacky and fantastical that nothing should work but it always does. He had a way of drawing characters that were always fun to look at, even as an adult. Even the live action got the Grinch on point compared to the 2018 one. We need the overly wacky like tiny men running in a hamster wheel that spins a turkey beneath a horn that shoots down flames. We need the Grinch to be overly cartoonish, like hello you're adapting the story of the Grinch. Make it the Grinch! You can't take the Seuss out of the Grinch.
