I went to the other dealerships at least twice because me and my wife (at the time were in our 50's) could not make up our mind. The Honda and Subaru places were very polite and encouraged us to keep researching and take test drives. When we returned to the Toyota dealership they got really rude. The manager comes out and said they would let us test drive it this time but if we didnt buy it then dont expect another test drive. We opted for another brand. Rude arrogant and entitled people.

I’m old enough to remember when Toyota (and Honda for that matter) offered quality at an economical price. The main reason why they rose to prominence was because in the 70’s while a lot of American cars looked great they were trash under the hood and got like 9 miles to the gallon on a good day. When you add two different oil crises in the decade people went to Toyota because they were affordable, reliable and got good MPG. Now they aren’t affordable, their reliability is still decent but nowhere near what it used to be and they don’t really offer any real advantage in MPG. I tried looking for a RAV4 Prime and when you could find one it marked up 5-10k over sticker.

Toyota used to have pride and bent over backwards to deliver a product that everyone wanted and at a good price point. Unfortunately, pride turned to greed and toyota morphed into the big 3 American companies in the 80's. Reliability is way down and so is something called value. The engineering on newer vehicles is laughable. For instance, no one wants to remove the front bumper to replace a headlight. Whomever thought the new oil filters was a good idea should be flogged. As a consumer, I demand value. I want longevity and low maintenance. Toyota is no longer listening to me so I am going to have to look elsewhere. Oh and guess what, I wont be buying a 4 banger turbo for a truck or SUV. Lastly, if you want me to buy a toyota, it is going to be made in the U.S. or Japan.

You name it and I've probably owned that brand. I've had over 30 new cars in the 55 years that I've been driving. I've never been able to purchase a Honda because sales managers at the dealerships in PA, VA and MD are focused on making the absolute top dollar for them while not bargaining with you. Every single car and truck either has 2500-3000 dealer installed options you don't want or they just slap a sticker on the window of the adjusted market value. I've done very well without a Honda so far but if I ever run across a stealership willing to deal, I might buy one.

The real problem is that they aren't smart enough to know that the more cars you sell, the more you make. They will not come down off the sticker price.
@caryg463813 күн бұрын
Not really; low supply coupled with sufficient demand gives the ability to raise MSRP. And they got away with this during the pandemic and made record profits with lower inventory and supply, but that won't fly in an economy of high interest rates, ever higher prices for everything else, economic uncertainty, and more competition from other brands. Ironically, the lower supply is likely to be helpful in a market like this, where you aren't guaranteed to move as many cars, but dealership greed with the add ons will be the nail in the coffin.
@MattScott-zz7ix13 күн бұрын
@caryg4638 the point is, if you sell the cars for less you will sell more.l sold cars your idea that they can't build more cars is ridiculous.
@caryg463813 күн бұрын
@@MattScott-zz7ix when did I say they can’t build more? I don’t think I wrote that. I think I implied that they won’t build more cars because they are trying not to be caught with a lot of cars on dealer lots in case of a slowdown in the economy; that was the initial reason. The side effect was that it constrained supply when there was high demand, allowing dealers to sell every car that was made, and sell at a market adjustment: everyone except the customer was happy, and it is what has made dealers so high off of these market adjustment prices. They don’t want to go back, and manufacturers like Toyota don’t really want to go back to high volume production when they have to just give incentives to dealers to sell them, cutting into their profits. I don’t think anyone is stopping them from producing more, but they have had an incentive, until now, to produce less and just raise prices.
@caryg463813 күн бұрын
@@MattScott-zz7ix also, I agree that volume selling with lowered prices is the way to go in a market that is not dominated by high demand. I too sold cars, and the very thing that frustrated me was that dealers would hold onto cars at MSRP and fight customers instead of giving them away for less and just moving more cars and more volume, which would just give them more allocation so they could rinse and repeat. It is a strategy for potentially selling more cars and making more money. But the Covid experience in the pandemic, really change the paradigm, and when manufacturers have an incentive to produce fewer cars, no matter what, then dealers allocations will also fall, so the domino effect will be that they will either raise the price or sell the cars for less like the old model and just have to wait for cars to come in. I guess they feel that they would be leaving profit on the table. So it’s a vicious cycle.

I have 6 Toyota dealers within a 50mi radius of me and none of these dealers can get cars, i.e. Camry, RAV4, Crown, etc. When they get cars they are sold before they hit the dealers lot. What I've been told by 3 of these dealers is that Toyota has cut production and some other dealers say there are part shortages. Whatever the reason, there are few Toyota cars to be had in my area and some of these dealers are owned by large auto corporations, meaning, they should have clout w/Toyota and be able to secure inventory especially if sales are low as you state.
