I was stationed in S Korea, Camp Walker, Taegu, back in the mid 70's and looking at KZbin videos today, Camp Walker is unrecognizable. Yes, Korea was still developing back then and their taxi cab bodies were made in Korea and engines manufactured in Japan. Today, the entire car is made in Korea, and their tech industry is another story.

When I met my husband in 1987 he was stationed in Yokusuka Japan Naval Base. They would come to the Philippines to have their ship repaired as it was cheaper to do it there than in Japan. It was one of those visits that we met.

I was a US Army Military Policeman in Pusan South Korea (Hialeah Compound) from 1977 to 1980 as a member of the 552nd Military Police Company. I remember guiding US Marines thru Pusan for Team Spirit many times over that time period. I also remember one of the Marine Battalions getting lost one year. I retired after 20 years from the US Army in 1995. I will be in Dumaguete in early May to visit and would love to meet this gentlemen. Hoo Rah!

I have travelled a lot over the years to Europe UK Ireland, China and Japan so I have the worldly exposure you need to adapt and being flexible durin gmy working years meant a lot of diffeent locations in Australia ( not military but Gov) so moving a lot teaches you to get organised and be responsive and settle in a new town or city easily is a learned skill just like the military have to adapt and fit in where ever they are posted.. I enjoyed this story a lot and I think the guu will do well here too.

I just developed bronchitis from an allergy. I have had bouts with bronchitis since high school. That iscwhy I won't live in poor air quality. I dud go to the Sulliman Hops later that day to get treatment for bronchitis. Had my annual physical VA Manila clinic last July. All well. Not taking any medication for anything.

Enjoyed that interview, Going to Army and Marine Corp basic trainings, that must have been fun, He's fortunate he didn't have to go to Air Force Basic training, that is the hardest of all the services, meanest TI's of them all. I joined in 76 and did 23 years. My dad was a retired Marine, I was born on Camp Pendleton back in 56 and grew up in Oceanside. I called him when I signed up for the AF and he said that's good son as I would never make it in the Corp. Anyway he had me late in his life and he told me about his time in the Philippians, he was transferred there with the 4th Marine regiment from China in the summer of 41, and was there when the Japanese attacked. He got called to his orderly room and was told he was going to Corregidor to be assigned to Dugout Dugs Marine body guard. After Dug left and went to Australia my dad was captured by the Japanese and sent to Japan as a POW on one of the hell ships. He was at Kawasaki Camp 2B for the entire war until his release. I would like to visit the Philippians and go to the island where he was captured and see what it was like.

@Pat. Hi Pat, had a chuckle at your term, 'Dugout Dug', LoL. I won't say anymore about that man but i do have my personal opinion of him. What happened to those poor guys taken prisoner by the Jap's is beyond belief. I know our side did some nasty stuff too but it pales in significance compared to Jap treatment of POW's. My wife is Filipina and we have a home there on Cebu although we are currently in New Zealand. Corregidor is a shrine to the fallen and to those who were cruelly treated. I hope you manage to visit the Philippines, you'll find it is a lovely country with smiling citizens who's ancestors were also treated badly during the war. I count among my friends several USA Vets whom i met in the Philippines. God bless you Pat. Bob, Infantry Veteran. New Zealand.

I just came down with my annual bronchitis a few days ago. Went to Sulliman Hospital later to get treatment.

I've been in the Philippines off and on for nearly the past 5 decades. I've been in a number of private hospitals, and have had minor treatment in the government hospitals and clinics. For my bronchitis, which I've had since high school; sort of an annual occurrence for me in recent years due to exposure to pollution and other toxics in the air, along with unspecified allergies causing bronchitis, I've found that treatment for bronchitis is uniform throughout southeast Asia and Korea, Egypt, and China, where I had been treated before. After the interview today, I went over to Silliman University Hospital a few blocks away to the ER to get some inhalation and IV injection therapy with steroids. I was attended to by a resident intern. Same medicines, same procedure as I had a year ago in March while in Yangon, Myanmar, and on Guam at Naval Hospital in the past. But I know what you are referring to, and that is the accessibility of complex medical treatment particularly for those expats living in the isolated areas of provinces and islands. I do have Tricare coverage (75%), with direct billing done by Medical City Clark in Angeles City. State of the art hospital. Two hospitals in Cebu City are reputable at international standards. Manila and Iloilo City also have international standards hospitals. I was once in Makati MedicaL Center back in 1981 for a major leg infection. Of course, without good insurance, or cash/credit card in hand, quality, or any care at all isn't available. Military retirees can avail of Medical City Clark for direct billing 75% to Tricare with 25% co-payment. Service connected disability claims and treatments at the Medical City Clark are directly billed to the VA FMP. I get an annual medical exam at the VA Medical Clinic located in Pasay City, Metro Manila. But for major medical issues like heart surgeries, knee replacements, and other complex procedures, one has to be cautious and select (if possible) one of the renowned medical centers like St. Lukes, Asian Heart, and Medical City. Otherwise, it's best to remain in the U.S.A. if one has full coverage for those procedures with Medicare and Part C supplemental coverage. I've been flying to Clark, Pampanga each month for consultation with the physical therapy department at Medical City Clark. I had two MRIs done on my knees and legs. I've seen a good number of Americans there, mainly military retirees, receiving treatment. Some of them looked to be in their 80s and early 90s. A few are in wheelchairs with their live-in attendants/family members with them. So, in my view, medical care and quality is about access to it, and affordability if not insured.

I lived and worked there 3x between 1999 and 2017. Also was on a retirement visa in 2017-18. First went there on annual leave while in the military in 77. Yes, it's better for housing, medical, food, and public transportation. But for a true relationship without mandatory dowry, the Philippines is best. To party Thailand is tops, to have a relationship- Philippines is tops. Thai girls have changed so much over the years. Most of them now prefer men nearer to their own age. But I haven't burnt my bridges. I still maintain my bank account there and credit card account I've had since 2010.
