I totally get the mentality of keeping things out of the landfill. I used to be the same way, and I still feel that tug. And then one day I looked around my house and realized “Oh no… my home has become the landfill!” 🤦♂️
@bethstratton33913 ай бұрын
I love that you recognised that about your surroundings and did something about it. 😀 The fight to want to keep things out of the landfill and be environmentally responsible is real for so many of us. However, decluttering to keep our own homes functional and tidy is more important, provided we learn not to keep re-buying stuff we don’t need and also discourage others n our lives from doing the same. Also, provided we don’t allow ourselves to be the acceptance point for everyone else’s stuff just to keep it from the landfill.

As a habitual recycler, I must say there have been some times when fretting about recycling (sorting, disposing, etc.) has been too much for me and I've just thrown a bunch of the 'potentially recyclables' away (as long as they weren't useful objects for donation nor hazardous). Not the greatest thing to do, but it's honestly sometimes such a relief to just throw the trash away when I need to! You might consider the big picture, that recycling at all other times may forgive a few 'trash'-gressions in the broad scheme of things! 😅
@lunahelena53293 ай бұрын
I also have this mentality and some time ago I realized that most of the responsibility lies in people producing things and buying them - owning them is just the last link in the chain. This freed me a lot of the guilt but the sadness remained

You just said something in this video that I think is so important when to cluttering especially for folks who are on the hoarder spectrum... Think of all the reasons to get rid of things when you pick them up instead of focusing on all the reasons to keep them. Something I'm learning recently is that most things are replaceable But our time is not so we don't want to be spending time churning the hoard.
@gracesimplified38603 ай бұрын
There’s an irony to the fact that you were a storage facilities manager. Maybe with your progression in hoarding recovery, being laid off is part of that progression to lead you to greater things. 😊

Such a fantastic mindset change. Great job! One thing someone else online once said, that struck a chord with me was that, I am not a department store for friends and family. It is not my job to hang on to stuff, just in case someone else may, one day, need it. Also...love that dress.

Since the Christmas cave seems to be an access point for plumbing and possible leak issues, would it be better to create a wall of storage to put seasonal and decor type stuff? It would give you better access for those things you miss changing out each season and reduce you just churning it. We've been redoing my mom's storage and creating shelves to store boxes. It has worked out so much better than having a cave of boxes pushed together and on top of each other. And it seems your kids have outgrown their basement playroom so unless you are going to update it to a teen hangout, I would just convert the whole basement to shelves and use the middle as workout and a craft studio.

We don’t have plastic bags here in Bellingham, Washington at stores although I don’t quite understand why Dollar tree and target still have them…. They still come into my life. I keep a very small bag of them on the shelf in the cupboard and if it gets too hard to stuff the other ones in there that I have too many. My local food bank my bank is always looking for donations of plastic bags. I’m not sure if they use them to give to unhoused individuals or what they use them for but I wonder if you were local Bank also would want them?

You did great in this episode, Ms Heart. I really love that you said you recognised you are no longer a Storage Facility Manager and that you don’t feel the need to hang on to all the stuff connected to your old job. This shows a really amazing amount of progress. I am so proud of you for your understanding and dedication to not letting your past self image and old job interfere with your current life and your willingness to empty out your basement. I relate to what you were saying, because I remember it was hard for my husband to get rid of all the stuff associated with his old job of 21 years when he retired. I helped him declutter half a room full of stuff that he brought back from work. He told me after we had decluttered all of it, that he realised he didn’t miss any of it whatsoever, and in fact he was glad it was no longer cluttering up our home. This made me so joyful for him.

Here, in Calif. plastic bags were banned. Last week, though, a charity food distribution center needed them to hand out food to the homeless. They said they go through 200 bags a week. I'm going to research that here, find a charity close by that needs them, so when I have too many, I can take them over. Oh, and even though bags are banned, we still have them, they just charge you for them....🙄
@sarahsmom10023 ай бұрын
I'm in Ontario, Canada & plastic bags have been banned here for a while. You can't even pay for one. All you can buy, if you forget your own bags, are the reusable fabric type. Most people have too many of these since they often forget to bring in their own bags from home or their car when shopping. They get rid of the extras when they donate items to the local food bank or a thrift store, as the case may be.
@mrandisg3 ай бұрын
I'm in a small town in northwest Georgia, and so far they haven't banned plastic bags here yet. I've been preparing in case they do, trying to get into the habit of bringing my own reusable bags, but having ADHD makes that difficult. Still, I kind of wonder if there are too many people in my local area who would raise a stink if our stores ever tried to ban or charge for plastic bags. I can picture some pretty funny scenes! Well, they wouldn't be funny to the store employees, but still...I kinda feel like our area is going to be one of those last holdouts if the plastic bag ban goes global. My local food bank uses plastic bags too. So does my local library. They hand them out for your checked-out items if you forget to bring your own bag. Once I donated a huge collection of them there, and I ended up getting some of them back later when I checked out books! I knew they were mine because they were from a store that had closed down years before! 🤣

You have so kept me motivated to keep on my my whole house declutter I have committed to! Given my self 18 months to see where I’m at. Hope I have gone through the whole house at least twice. Time will tell. I know the impact decluttering makes on how fast and well I can maintain. And since I have through the past maybe 20 years, it shouldn’t get to bogged down, Have to accommodate my 74yo needs. It is still doable. Only slower! lol. And I’m ok with that done. It will get done eventually. Gone are the days of marathon deep clean and decluttering! And I’m ok. Because I know how wonderful it is on the other side. Take care all.

I use an old Tidy Cat litter container for my plastic bags. When the container gets full and no more bags can fit, I recycle the ones that can’t fit in there. That’s how I know when to declutter them. I gave them a space that they have to fit in.
@Anberel3 ай бұрын
One of the things I really loved from the book How to Keep House While Drowning is that it gives you permission to choose saving yourself over saving your stuff from the landfill. Having to rehome or recycle everything can be another excuse to not declutter. A lot of your churned items were things you meant to “save” by giving away or selling them, but instead they just continued to be part of the hoard. I absolutely do my best to recycle and rehome things when I have the health and energy to do so. I no longer guilt myself for putting things in the trash if that’s what is best for my health in that moment. Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.

G'day from Australia Melanie. We also have a plastic bag ban here too. If you did want to use up some of your bags for bin liners, you could maybe line each bin with 5 or 6, one inside the other, and then they do serve a purpose for a season, and the rest could go. I imagine too, that those coming to your yard sales will usually have some means of getting their finds home eg car etc. I'm so pleased for you, that you're speaking at Get Organised HQ!!

I watched another video and they were told "you can't keep things out of the landfill indefinitely, everything will end up there eventually" and while I'm still going to be mindful and recycle it's okay to let things go if I'm just becoming a temporary landfill storage.

I just love these big piles! You're doing so good! It's been really cool watching YOU grow during your journey. I do want to let you know, you really shouldn't be diffusing essential oils in a home with a cat as they are toxic. They lack an enzyme in their liver that breaks them down. Diffusing directly puts the oils into the air, which then come back down and land on your cat or surfaces they lay on (which they lick to clean themselves), or are breathed in. Please reconsider using an EO diffuser with Ms. Pepper in your home!

My province was one of the first to ban the plastic shopping bag. I hoarded the last ones to use and would get them from friends in other provinces that still had them as I used them for this and that. What resulted in the reusable bags only was having an abundance of those in the house..lol...they were donated to a food bank.

as you were talking about being able to give hoarded things to others, it was making me wonder if you've ever thought there's a connection between your childhood bullying and feeling rejected by others and your gift giving patterns today? Do you think there's a connection for you where you're trying to self-sooth those childhood emotions _you_ felt by gift giving to others (making _them_ feel accepted / trying to avoid your child or another child feeling rejected like you did, or making another person more likely to like and accept you / avoiding feeling rejected yourself)

You’ve inspired me, though, and I’m going to put in a little time today to hopefully make some progress. 💪📦🗑😊 Good luck figuring out what to do with your work tree🎄- maybe it could be your basement tree when you get space cleared out to be a family room? Or you could donate it to your church? Also, if you have a clogged basement drain it may be tree roots impacting the pipes leading to municipal waste water pipes. Not sure what the solution is - or how you’d know if tree roots were the problem. But how great that you’ve cleared enough space in the basement that the contents of the Christmas cave have somewhere to go while awaiting repairs!
