I don’t care if it is some special animation style such as "realism" or what not; it still looks terrible to me. They added these filler scenes just to flex their "animation," which made me cringe to be honest, but I'm sure they will speedrun the rest of the episode so that they won't bother animating this disastrous garbage in the future. I'm glad that the anime was heavily butchered by MAPPA because Chainsaw Man is the most overrated and underwhelming anime of all time.

The funny thing about "Nakayama hates anime/moe anime, don't understand anime" narrative is if you see his resume he literally did lot of key animation for what lot of people considered as an "anime" heck few of them are you could say moe anime like idolmaster for example. Also one of the most talked about Jujutsu Kaisen episode which is episode 19 was directed by him. This guy KNOWS and UNDERSTANDS what "anime" is and he worked on lot of them and not a guy who popped out of nowhere to be a director, he just a guy who trying different approach/vision on his directorial debut as an series director from what he usually do as an animator.

I, and many other people, had already read the manga before the anime was announced and we loved the anime. Wanna know why? Because we didn't make up our own headcannons about how the story is "supposed" to be and we did not speed read the entire manga. The most common complaint I've heard about the anime is that it isn't chaotic like the manga, but the parts that the anime has covered till now were not at all chaotic in the manga either. This was the slowest, and weakest part of the manga. Second complaint is, dull colour palette. Where? Show me one single scene where the colour palette is "dull". The art direction in the anime is vibrant af and plenty colourful. You guys are just hating for the sake of it atp.

To add on to your comment I don't even think CSM has much of a "western cinematic style" rather than it just having cinematography with actual skill behind it. Most anime are completely bereft of interesting cinematography outside of their action scenes. I hope CSM shows the rest of the industry just how beautiful a simple dialogue or SOL scene can look.

Aside from the lack of colors in some scenes, and the downgrade in comedic depiction of some others, I believe the direction is what made the first season special, and not just another fight anime with silly goofs and a over the top violence. It sure can improve in season 2, taking some feedback, but calling it anything close to a bad adaptation, when it even managed to improve upon a lot of scenes from the manga and even on the pacing, is just bs.

Reading through Chainsawman again is a very different feel from watching it. Because it's funny. Chainsawman in manga form has borderline comedic pacing, especially in the earlier arcs. The feel of the anime was the feel I would expect around the Gun Devil arc, not the "Denji is a wacky goober in a world of jaded devil hunting maniacs" feeling we got. This is ESPECIALLY true of the early Reze chapters, his awkwardness isn't foreboding or relateable, it's skit-worthy. Chainsaw Man is a Slice of Life manga where people die horrifically. It's about Denji the loser trying to find out what being normal is like while also keeping up with a very abnormal job. That's the charm that you can only get from the manga, because the anime makes it feel like you're one episode away from watching a depressing, upsetting and horrific drama.

I feel like 90% of this just comes from unrealistic expectations. I personally thought the adaptation was great and still managed to convey the feel of the series. Western fans may love the anime, but let's not forget a bluray release of those premium japanese anime actually cost a pretty penny. It's easy to love an anime when you are paying for a 10 buck a month subscription on a digital platform, rather than have to drop 50-60 BUCKS for TWO EPISODES. The target audience for those blurays is HARDCORE FANS. And hardcore fans are obviously very vocal about what they want and when they dislike something. It probably wasn't the best idea ever to change the feel of something that was aimed at them.

And it's a bad idea to listen these "western fans" at the expense of the Japanese audience to begin. Not only financially, since the vast majority either pirate or use western middlemen who take up such a large cut of the revenue compared to JP broadcast rights and sales. But also creatively, since what makes anime 'anime' is intrinsically tied to the Japanese crowd or creative process. We get enough crap from Hollywood/Netflix/Amazon/etc. already, imagine wanting to stamp out diversity of thought and entertainment even further by imposing "for a global audience" crap onto the few remaining alternatives.

I think the reason JP fans are pissed, is because they were expecting a more traditional shonen style smilliar to stuff like JJK. But instead got something more western therefore the west loved it. Personally one reason I loved CSM was because it felt more western than most shonen's and the adaptation captured that but I guess most JP audience aren't a fan of that.

I enjoy the different interpretion of csm through the anime. I think its very hard to capture what makes the manga special in an entirely different medium. japanese are quite vicious actually despite looking wholesome outside. if they don't like something, they really SHOW that they don't like it. personally, i don't have a problem with the director but being completely honest, while from a technical pov, csm was amazing. however, as a huge csm fan, i can tell that the anime just lacks that ''chaotic'' and ''goofy'' feeling of the manga. it doesn't ''feel'' like csm. those who haven't read the manga probably have no clue as to what i m saying but it's genuinely true. now, again, i want to get this out of the way that i don't hate ryu nakayama. i think he did a good job overall but i think he misunderstood certain aspects of the manga and that's fine. everyone makes mistakes. ryu nakayama certainly made a mistake but he doesn't deserve this much hate for that mistake. hopefully, things work out for him in the future.

@@mrkingdrago1013 yes it was great. i never said it wasn't. but the fact remains that it failed to grasp the atmosphere of the manga. ryu nakayama attempted to give it a more cinematic and ''serious'' feel but that's not how the source material is. it's hard to describe but in simple terms, csm manga feels ''goofy'', ''rough'', ''funny'' and ''serious'' at the same time while anime just feels excessively serious. not that it's a bad thing but it does mean that the manga fans didn't get what they wanted.

I just bumped into your video and let me guess why some Japanese people didn’t like the anime (I’m Japanese) The anime itself wasn’t bad to be honest and Those who got to know chainsaw man through anime actually have good impressions on it in Japan let alone overseas. This might be why the anime is criticized less overseas. So this means they expected too much: because the manga was already overwhelmingly popular, and also Mappa revealed the committee consists of only Mappa and Shueisha (publisher of Jump) without sponsor companies unlike other animes, which meant they can make an anime without restrictions of sponsors. Given that Mappa would make the adoption of that popular manga Chainsaw man with skilled creators without sponsors, it was kind of natural that they expected a lot. The community actually was so hyped before the airing. And the anime itself has some reasons too. The adoption has changed some lines, switched scenes, depicted action scenes in weird ways, lowered the voices of actors, changed camera working and so on, which didn’t make sense sometimes. I think I can find some examples if you ask. These changes were adopted because the director Nakayama tried to make an anime that’s more likely to be calm and cinematic, while people expected messy and wild anime like Kill La Kill or FLCL. I personally appreciate his efforts a lot, but Chainsaw man mas was unfortunately not a proper one to realize his eager. I don’t know if you know, but it’s a common opinion that Nakayama will make a good adoption of Look Back and Goodbye Eri, which I totally agree with. It’s not full of complaints. Almost no one denies the OPs and EPs were gorgeous, voice acting was amazing, and animation was top tier. But just remember haters alway have louder voices. And as you might have already known, Chainsaw man community is so maniac. Someone said “we thought we’d have jirou ramen but were served with elegant French cuisine” and this might explain things well. However! I don’t feel comfortable seeing complaints towards the director on Twitter. It’s a shame we didn’t get a chaotic adoption, but it is what it is. I hope Nakayama will be successful in the future. I know Mappa understands the number of copies sold and they’ll decide the next step to take and that’s it. I really hate the CSM anime, not about the style or VA problems, some ''changes'' or ''how they do it'' just don't make sense. For example, episode 3, when Denji pull the engine, cut bat's arm, then we have 10 seconds for a random woman slow walking in office, in manga, this scene only took 1/3 of page, just 1 picture of building get smash, if they want show off exquisite hand movements, maybe just make that woman do all of that by the window, saw the shadow on her hands, panic and run out. Another is episode 4, after Aki talk to POWER, said he's not gonna be friend with demons or something, anime make him goes to report to Makima, go home, do the laundry, then POWER shows up, in manga, after he talk to POWER, next page, POWER already show up in apartment, the part they make he does the laundry, is not bad, but this part is it's a punchline, the plot arrangement ruin it.

All our big western franchises already get focus-grouped and micro-managed into soulless, forgettable "product", bereft of a single creative risk or interesting decision, lest we anger some sub-section of "The Fans", who will never be happy no matter what they get. I feel conflicted. One on hand, it misses a lot of what makes the manga great, and it’s disappointing to see the Sam Raimi horror-comedy energy pretty much absent from the anime. On the other hand, it is disappointing to see the anime industry being help back by the idea that the source material is king, and the animators shouldn’t display creativity by making their own stamp on the anime.

I think it adapts the manga perfectly, and delivers on that horror-comedy angle even better than the manga did. I think I said this on another video, but I feel there should be no qualms appreciating the anime and manga as their own stylistic prduction, rather than just a medium. I expected the sketchy, bombastic manga style, but my expectations were met and sometimes even surpassed with the cinematics. One thing I'll never understand is people that imply CSM is "supposed" to be loud and zany at all times. Sure CSM has it's loud moments but, after rereading it, there are an absolute ton of quiet, introspective moments all throughout the manga. Not only that, but everything from the characters to the backgrounds to the devils are all rendered with an air of believability and realism that grounds the series as a whole. It's like people think the series is as wacky and loud as One Piece for some reason but it just isn't. Most of the wacky moments in CSM are almost purely dialogue based with maybe a silly face thrown in once in a while. Fujoimoto doesn't really play around with the character designs at all even during humerous moments, and the series never felt remotely cartoonish. More than that CSM is pretty serious and bleak in tone throughout most of the story. Quite a few moments in the story I would describe as downright depressing. For these reasons I think the adaptation captures the feel of the manga brilliantly.

Just slap a loli or fanservice and everything is gonna be good. They even criticize csm anime bec makima's ass isn't as big as in the manga, they also want an "ara-ara" voice for makima's voice. (sorry for the huge text) Yiman, you might have heard this later, but the BR sales were higher than that. The Blu-Ray version sold on MAPPA’s own website offered a good deal of bonus goodies, and we all know Japanese BR collectors dig their bonus items. But MAPPA never reports sales from their own site so the sales numbers aren’t fully reliable. MAPPA later clarified the show was successful but also didn’t quite match their expectations, but that’s not necessarily a problem as sometimes people expect too much but still make more than enough (Tomb Raider 2013 “sold under expectations” despite seemingly being a big seller, and lo and behold two more games followed regardless). And obviously there’s the streaming revenue, broadcast revenue, merchandise sales, and good lord the international licensing, they would have made a ton of money before episode 1 even aired simply from Crunchyroll getting the rights which I’m sure was not cheap. As for the anime, I had read the manga beforehand, and for me it was a dark action/drama with a good deal of dark comedy in it. So the anime for me absolutely nailed the tone and such, and the cinematic approach was fantastic (ridiculous that some acted like this “betrayed anime” or something, how is pushing the medium to try new things a betrayal?). I honestly had no idea some saw it as primarily a dark comedy with some dramatic elements until afterwards. Their interpretation is just as valid as mine, the problem is by going too hard on the director they’re not extending the same courtesy to my and his and others’ interpretation. It’s fine to not be personally satisfied with how the anime turned out, but those getting too aggressive towards the director and staff and being 100% dismissive of an interpretation that doesn’t match their own comes off as obnoxious in my book. It’s ironic because (*manga spoilers but I won’t name a certain name*) near the end of Part 1, Denji asks the final antagonist if in their “perfect world”, will “bad movies” be allowed to exist? The antagonist says they honestly believe the world would be better if “bad movies” ceased to exist. Those who are going so far to legitimately hate a man and his team for merely making an adaptation they didn’t care for, they’ve ironically found themselves agreeing with Chainsaw Man’s Part 1 antagonist. If Fujimoto read some of those tweets, he’d probably be staring in disbelief wondering if they had even actually read his manga because way to miss a major Aesop….. Really, I try to ignore the extreme hate found in Japanese fans’ tweets as much as fans from other places’ extreme tweets. I mean, apparently some Japanese fans hated the voice cast purely because they weren’t very well known in the industry which isn’t fair at all. Also, I remember hearing some Japanese anime fans didn’t give Komi Can’t Communicate a chance because “a pretty girl wouldn’t have trouble speaking and socializing”. Needless to say, my eyes rolled hard at that take. Doesn’t matter what country it is, some fans will be reasonable in liking or disliking something, and other fans will go too extreme or just be downright unfair or close minded.

Personally, my only complaint is with the fight scenes. Denji in particular just looks like a drunk guy stumbling around trying to throw haymakers than him fighting. It makes sense that he moves like that at the beginning because his abilities are new to him, but it just looks bad when he fights the katana guy (sorry, forgot his name) who also moves in a similar manner. The rest of the characters' "fights" have a large focus on singular attacks, which is great for conveying the emotion behind each action like with Aki when he used his contracted devil, but makes cutscenes without that same intent like Denji's fight against the bat devil feel sluggish and boring.

Nakayama's career began with moe anime lmao, he did a lot of moe animes, then did action direction in series directed by Yoshihara. Storyboarded and directed the high octane episode 19 of Jujutsu Kaisen. Is friends with huge names like Enokido, Sakazume. Directed and did key animation on Eve's MV. Went on to work with names like Shingo Yamashita. Worked in high profile episodes involving legendary animators. Animated in both series & movie of Jujutsu Kaisen. Solo storyboarded, directed & animated one of Black Clover's highly praised endings. As you see his resume is literally top notch. So does his wide range of connections. He's the one responsible for training the new recruits who worked on CSM's endings. Fujimoto himself was more or less involved with the anime production through editor Lin who served as Editing Producer for the anime. So what went wrong? The answer is simple. The interview was the trigger. The Japanese twisted his words to make him seem like he hates moe culture. Same people who're known for sending death threats to directors & burning down studios. There was no going back. Makes you think these incels don't deserve a single good thing.

Honestly, I love how the Anime was made and I saw a video that made me notice why. First of all, I started checking the manga in depth AFTER watching the Anime, so my opinion might not be the most valid, but I think the BEST way to see the Anime adaption as a DIFFERENT interpretation of the Manga. The Manga uses REALLY well of the fact that it is a Manga. I plays with it and the best example the Darkness Devil fight with how Fujimoto made it look like the Devil was using the Manga itself to fight everyone. This is a strong point of it, meanwhile the Anime plays well with cinematography like being a movie. It has MANY beautiful shots and moments created with the right music of effect that I HAVE to applause the director with how it was made. With how Fujimoto is a movie fanatic, it was perhaps a perfect adaptation, but that's the thing. Yeah, it is adapting the Manga, but adapting in a NEW and FRESH way. Instead of being a one on one with how the Manga goes, it tries being something new. To be a NEW experience to even the Manga reader. Sure, this means some stuff will be cut or different, but in the long shot the man did a very good job with it. Hell, made me EXCITED what he could have planned for the Darkness Devil and the GUN Devil scenes. It's very unfair how he was treated in Japan. Hope he is back for a second season of Chainsaw Man... well, for of all I hope the IS a second season to be announced :T

I know you are trying to make a narrative, but Its misleading to talk about blueray sales as a marker of success. Since mappa owns most of the rights to chainsawman anime, they sold the blue ray as a complete season bundle on their website later instead of bocchi which sold per 2 episode. Then when the mappa bundle finally released they sold enough to be successful. It was corrected also that mappa's CEO didn't say the csm was less successful than JJK in terms of sales, but instead in terms of cultural impact.

It really just comes down to how you interpreted the manga. I wouldn't call the CSM manga particularly cinematic, imo, it's probably the least cinematic of all Fujimoto's works. The approach Nakayama used would have fit way better for literally any other Fujimoto manga. Like CSM has its serious moments sure, but it is DEFINITELY NOT all of it (just read the recent chapters, I mean COME ON) and downplaying / toning down the goofy aspects misses why its so unique. Straight up, if my first introduction to CSM was through the anime I would have probably dropped it.

Which is why I said it comes down to how you interpreted the manga b/c when I read CSM I didn't see a dark, somber arthouse film, but something more like Pulp Fiction or Scott Pilgrim. Like there's a universe out there where ideally, BOTH styles were incorporated together (like the MANGA) but instead he took the former ONLY, and applied it to every aspect of the show. Seems like the animators working on the EDs understood this b/c ED 3 in particular is more in the style of CSM imo than anything in the actual anime which is sad.

I think the only reasonable complaint you can have for the series is that the art direction plays it safe with the glossy look and relatively simple color palette and art direction, while other Mappa works like dorohedoro and itaden deities have been very experimental. This is reflected in jujutsu Kaisen as well, which is more refined compared to geges scratchy art style. If chainsaw man had half the experimental nature of the endings, I would’ve loved it even more. I like fujimotos simple art style a lot. Otherwise the anime was excellent

Finally I'm not the only one who has this kind of mindset where it comes to anime adaptation. Cause when the anime didn't have 1:1 adaptation from the manga, it gives me new experience when I'm consuming each of medium and it's kind of like one to another medium complimenting each other.

I think I wouldnt mind seeing flashier colors being used from time to time kinda like what you would saw on the cover. The 3D sometimes felt odd but otherwise I liked the anime and it made me buy and read the whole damn manga

I didnt like the adaptation that much, if i only watched the anime before reading the manga maybe i would like it more but i dont know. My main problem with the anime would start with the use of cg, not because i hate cg or anything like that but i really didnt like the implementation of it on this anime, i could say when it was cg and when it was 2d, the anime didnt handle the transition from 2d to cg well, the cg always felt stiff and slow and i never felt any energy from it, i just hope that they improve on the cg on the second season, because if it stays the same i will be severely disappointed, one part that i really like in chainsaw man is that the fights always feel fast, the anime made them a drag. I also feel like it was too serious, while i wouldnt mind that for later arcs, on the first ones that doesnt seem that appropriate, ffs why tf are you trying to be serious on the arc where the last scene is literally a ball kicking competition. So yeah, be more comedic anime, thats literally one of the best parts of the manga that felt completely ignored by the anime.

The best directing I've seen in my life, his cenimatic approach is revolutionary and one of the most ambitious works of art I've seen in recent years. There was no other way csm would've felt like csm without his directorial choices.

of course it would be received better in the US. many less manga readers among them. no manga/anime series will ever outsell one piece. he is so far beyond everyone else in sales and net worth. its insane.
