What are you people smoking? Have we read the same manga, because to me the show captured the "intent" of the manga very well (maybe safe for slightly dragged out fights?) and I'd even say enhanced the original material. I was skeptical about how an adaptation would look like because the other options would be for it too look like a shallow flat shounen or something overly stylized for no descerbable reason, but it definitely surpassed my expectation, while still of course not being perfect. This was the only style that could capture the grim and chaotic/fast paced nature of fujimoto's writing well enough for it to be enjoyable in animation

All I want is for the Chainsaw Man future adaptations to be given the love it deserves. If that requires MAPPA or any other studio to be more lenient on the animators, it's a basic requirement and one that NEEDS to happen. The CSM fanbase will not be happy with a bad adaptation owing to bad work environments. Somethings need to change, and studios need to take note and tone down on their pressure.

The thing with Chainsaw Man is that the first season barely covered anything in terms of the good parts of the story. Its just a basic introduction to the world and a few fights here and there. Season 2 though will be much more interesting and engaging. We will start to get real villains introduced, stakes will be raised a lot, new plots and characters will be revealed, etc. I think the Japanese will come around to like Chainsaw Man starting from the next season. @joshuukun
@joshuukun Жыл бұрын
@sammysaito529 I'm completely aware. This is why I made the comment praising his direction in the first place. I doubt CSM would lose the cinematic style given Fujimoto had a hand in it, not to mention the later arcs of first part CSM manga had tons of cinematic intent. I get it not exactly fitting the first season, but the later arcs wouldn't work any other way. I always thought that. If it does lose it, I'll gladly be disappointed. Why should I yield and lower my expectations? I won't lose a lot either way. As long as the adaptation's good regardless of the style then it's good for me.
@alanrickman4385

See, thats the thing, they didn’t need to start with this darkish cinematic approach, but introduce it in the later arcs instead. That way people would’ve felt like they were feeling in the manga. But now it looks like it’s gonna be reverse(if they are gonna change it with new director), which is making it even worse imo
@joshuukun
@joshuukun Жыл бұрын
@@alanrickman4385 I'm gonna be honest, I loved season 1 too. Yes it was more goofy and hectic than the later arcs but I don't think the cinematic approach was bad at all. Now this is rant-territory, but I feel like a lot of that idea of Chainsaw Man being heavily stylized comes from speedreaders, cause it always felt Tarantino-esque to me along with the batshit insane things that were happening. Sure, some stylization here and there would've been nice for season 1, but as a whole, I didn't think Nakayama's work was bad from a creative standpoint, in fact, it's fantastic. Even so, a lot of people still did enjoy the CSM anime regardless so it's not like everyone hated the directorial approach. It still seems like a very loud minority than anything I do think the next few seasons won't lose that cinematic style at all, given Fujimoto's clearly leaning on that style. And the fact that he's a movie buff. Whoever handles the next season(s) would definitely have some degree of that animation philosophy with it. The only way it won't is for some reason the new director wants more creative freedom going around each animator/animation director, the same way Gosso's doing with JJK season 2 right now, for example.

@ssilentmedia

to answer your question. it was the director's magic. he made changes to the source material to make it more cinematic, more slow and make it have less jokes/silly faces. the source material was more "colorful" and that's part of the charm the manga had it's honestly all about the tone and general style of the manga vs the anime. if there is one thing that can't be denied is the fact that he, intentionally, tried to change the tone and overall style of the work when he adapted it from the manga to anime. even he said this and that's why a lot of people disliked the anime. they disliked it because: 1. it didn't have the same tone and overall style as the manga 2. some of the things he said made him look smug and look like he knows better than anyone. people didn't want to see HIS take on chainsaw man, people wanted to see the same chainsaw man they've seen in the manga but in anime format. i'm an anime only and even though I absolutely loved the anime, I can't blame the fans of the manga for being upset about the changes (i can't forgive the death threats tho) yes. when you adapt a story from one medium to another (written to manga, manga to anime, written to anime, written to movie, anime to video game, etc etc), there are some changes that you absolutely must do because they are verry different mediums and each medium has it's own strengths and weaknesses. but the changes he made weren't essential changes that absolutely had to be done. he made them because HE wanted to make them to make his own version of chainsaw man. honestly. it all MAPPA's fault here. while he did deliver an amazing product, he wasn't the right director for this manga. man... i really feel bad for him.

I think the more realistic and serious direction was amazing, but thats not to say it's what every manga fan expected. It's understandable that Japanese fans of the manga aren't happy with aspects of the adaptation, but to completely change director and vision of the anime would be jarring now that a serious mood has already been established, especially for the rest of the story which actually gets more progressively darker and sad. @hangry3102 Жыл бұрын
@@yhwach1 The art style, colors, and overall character details like facial expressions in the anime are noticeably different from the manga, which many agree give the anime a more moody/realistic tone. For instance in the manga, the colored panels and manga covers are _very_ vibrant and colorful, and even without color the characters are always brightly lit and are lacking shading, making them stand out more as flat drawings rather than as three dimensional objects (that's not to say there is no shading whatsoever in Chainsaw man but it is not the norm). And the art style in the manga is not realistic, in fact it's very simplistic and cartoony when it can be, focusing on silhouette above all else but also sticking to the fundamentals. Many panels have varying levels of detail like when it comes to environment shots or closeups, but generally speaking the art style of Chainsaw Man is on the cartoony side with very thick lines almost like a newspaper comic style where displaying character emotion is the priority instead of imitating reality. Which is why many also agree that it lends itself to comedy better than the anime. The anime is pretty much devoid of anything you could call "exaggerated" because it tries really hard to stick to reality instead of letting the art style carry it. Instead of mimicking Fujimoto's stylized expression and exaggeration in the manga, they opted for rotoscoped body language to give the characters more human qualities like in real life. There's so much you could pick apart and analyze, but rereading chainsaw man, the differences do stand out. While the contextual story is "realistic and serious" in both the manga and anime, the manga VISUALLY doesn't paint itself as that, it has a softer more gentle style similar to FoolyCooly, one of Fujimoto's biggest inspirations. Rereading chainsaw man, you'll see the differences form the anime more and more, just think visually instead of story wise.

The thing is that the cinematic approach is much closer to how Fujimoto's style is overall. Fujimoto basically admitted that for the early parts of Chainsaw Man, he tried something out of his comfort in order to lure in new readers, before going with his own cinematic approach in the manga down the line. I’m might be worried that Chainsaw Man will go down the same path like those anime I’ve just mention, but I mostly worried that it will be cancelled despite it’s positive score one Rotten Tomatoes and IMBD.

The problem with chainsaw man season one is that the style leaned too much into the movie vibe. What I like about the manga is that it has that anime feel while having some movie aspects incorporated too. IMO the anime didn’t capture that at all. Also a lot of the humor didn’t translate well at all. Some of the scenes I laughed at or at least a chuckle to in the manga I was straight faced when seeing them in the anime. The anime has this kind of sad and gloomy tone which I felt was never present in the manga. The manga is very chill about everything. It’s like we are seeing it through denji’s perspective. Even if people are dying and stuff as long as Denji has food and a place to stay everything is fine. While in the anime it’s very gloomy when anything sad happens. Just doesn’t feel like chainsaw man imo. I didn’t like the voice actors, more specifically the casting and performances, not the voice actors themselves. I feel like they chose very normal sounding voice and gave them the wrong direction too. Denji is kind of unhinged in the manga but he sounds incredibly normal in the anime. The dub did the voices better overall imo tho. I hated the anime but after some while I started to appreciate it as its own thing and started to actually like it. But as an adaptation of the manga I think it failed to deliver in many aspects and I think the Japanese fans are justified in thinking so.

He isn't moving to a different company, he is talking about MAPPA and what he is talking about is something that started in MAPPA a year ago which is what he says in the tweet. Mappa has been attempting to better the situation of animators through gradual initiatives, like raising salaries, hiring more full time animators, having programs to teach new generations etc and this response from Ryu seems to be as a reaction to all the outrage have animator recently. As far as is known, he IS a MAPPA employee, MAPPA wouldn't give him the director position if he wasn't especially since CSM was a 100% full MAPPA production and generally in this case the director is part of the production company

Heres the thing, i understand where the japanese fans are coming from. Chainsawman has a very hard to pin down tone that is probably partially the reason it took off so well. Going the serious and gritty route CAN work well like with season one but it also changes the way the story comes across. That being said its kinda a bad idea to try and pivot at this stage, and its not like the director didn't do a fantastic job at the direction he chose.

@@CrucibleOfHateQuote from the director: _When I was in junior high school, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" was broadcast late at night, and anime boomed. However, there is a certain "type" of TV anime. The so-called Akiba-kei, moe, and other fixed concepts in subcultures, such as girls having green or pink hair, are examples of this. However, animation itself is not an expressive technique that can only be achieved by relying on such things. I always wanted to make something that could be seen by adults, something that would be powerful enough to withstand the viewpoint of appreciation of the work. When it came time to make an animated version of "Chainsaw Man," I looked for links to what I wanted to do, and since I myself love movies and Mr. Fujimoto also loves movies, I thought it would be interesting to incorporate the essence of the realistic and cinematic. Rather than a personal selfishness, I was convinced that this would benefit the work._
@CrucibleOfHate
@CrucibleOfHate Жыл бұрын
@shadowwhowalk OP said "going the serious and gritty route." The director introduced a significant amount of cinematographic reference, and whether or not that's good or bad is irrelevant to my point, which is that the anime is not more serious or gritty than the manga. The tone of the story was not changed.

How the heck is it different ? I've read the manga twice and it's literally as dark, gritty and grounded like what the anime was. All these complaints about colour don't feel right to me at all. Almost every anime on earth has an op and ed that's more colourful than the actual show. Why is Chainsawman suddenly at fault for not being different in that regard ? And besides, the manga is far more grounded than people give it credit for. The anime focussed on that and also on how cinematic the manga is in general.
